Maynilad at Manila Water: Demand sa tubig, unti-unting tumataas;

Sinisikap nang kumuha ng tubig na hindi galing sa Angat Dam
Transcript
00:00 While the line continues to enter the hot water,
00:04 water concessionaires are trying to find other ways to get water,
00:09 especially by continuously lowering the water level in the Angat Dam,
00:13 which they say is the primary source.
00:15 This is what Clay Zelfordilla reported.
00:17 Susan is taking a bath with her two grandchildren
00:24 who are complaining about the hot weather.
00:27 It's so hot, it's like we're in Saudi Arabia.
00:30 That's why the kids need to take a bath three times a day.
00:33 There's no saving on water, no matter how big our bill is.
00:37 El Nino is now in full swing and the summer season is coming.
00:41 Manila and Manila Water noticed the increasing demand for water.
00:47 90% of the water supplied by two concessionaires to their customers
00:52 comes from the Angat Dam.
00:54 From 214 meters before the end of 2023,
00:58 the level of the Angat Dam has now reached 209 meters.
01:03 The water level is 18 centimeters per day.
01:07 There is no rain in our watersheds.
01:12 It will slowly go down until May or June of the year.
01:18 What we believe now is the drastic decrease
01:23 so that we won't have to eat the 180 meters when El Nino arrives.
01:28 If the demand for water and no rain is reduced,
01:32 they may be able to reduce the water supply to the dam.
01:35 The allocation of water is usually reduced in concessionaires
01:39 whenever the water level reaches 180 meters.
01:44 As much as possible, that is also the motto of the president,
01:48 that there should be no drastic interruption to our customers.
01:51 Manila and Manila Water are working hard
01:55 to get water that does not come from the Angat Dam
01:58 to provide water supply during El Nino.
02:03 This is one of the population water treatment plants
02:07 in the projects of Manila
02:09 to provide additional water to their customers during El Nino.
02:15 Instead of Angat Dam,
02:16 the water that is being cleaned from Laguna Lake
02:20 can supply to almost 1 million consumers
02:24 in the southern part of Metro Manila.
02:27 This is the target for March
02:30 when El Nino's continued arrival is expected.
02:33 Manila is also getting additional supply
02:36 from small plants and deep wells.
02:39 But the question is,
02:40 is this enough to avoid water service interruptions?
02:45 Our plans for additional supply augmentation
02:51 were based on the projected demand of customers.
02:59 It's hard to project that.
03:00 But then again, as much as we could,
03:04 we are preparing the available water supply in our system
03:09 to avoid service interruption to our customers.
03:13 But if the demand is really extreme,
03:18 if the demand for our available supply is still high,
03:23 we think that service interruption should be the last option
03:28 that we will do to address the impact of El Nino
03:32 on our water supply system.
03:36 Manila Water is getting additional water
03:39 from the Tayabasan River
03:41 and is now completing the Calaoes Water Supply System Project.
03:45 It will provide 20 million liters per day
03:48 and it is possible to increase to 80 MLD
03:52 in the time remaining.
03:54 The plant can serve thousands of households
03:57 in Antipolo City and nearby areas.
04:00 Manila Water can also increase the cleaning
04:04 of the Cardona Treatment Plant
04:06 that produces raw water in the middle of Rizal.
04:09 All of these projects are already prepared
04:13 so that when El Nino intensifies,
04:16 we can maximize all of these supply sources
04:21 to be able to proceed.
04:24 If we can already maximize all of these projects,
04:32 we are estimating that around 15 to 20 percent
04:35 of the total supply will be less dependent.
04:40 For now, MWSS believes that the water supply is sufficient
04:45 and there is no reason to have water service interruptions.
