00:00 The Taylor Swift deepfake incident has spurred the proposal of new legislation to protect
00:05 people from explicit deepfake images or videos.
00:09 Last month, Taylor Swift fans were tweeting "Protect Taylor Swift" in an attempt to cover
00:14 up explicit deepfakes of the star that started circulating online.
00:18 Swift is not the first celebrity to be affected by deepfakes.
00:21 Actor Scarlett Johansson spoke out on her own deepfakes in 2018, saying, "Nothing can
00:26 stop someone from cutting and pasting my image or anyone else's onto a different body and
00:31 making it look as eerily realistic as desired.
00:35 There are basically no rules on the internet because it is an abyss that remains virtually
00:39 lawless."
00:40 Now it seems U.S. lawmakers are looking to change that, as the Defiance Act, short for
00:45 Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits Act, has been proposed.
00:50 The act would allow victims of deepfakes to sue those distributing, creating, and receiving
00:55 said explicit images, giving hope to the affected victims.
