00:00 Members of the community turned out in force for a public consultation in
00:04 Borough of Lomosh to find out how the national grid upgrade would affect them.
00:09 Now the main thing that people are worried about is pylons for those
00:15 concerned people who are coming to you this afternoon. What are you saying to
00:20 them? So we are at an early stage because the cost of building
00:28 infrastructure like this finds its way onto all of our bills. Government does
00:32 expect us to strike a balance but we haven't decided on our detailed
00:38 proposals yet. We want to hear everybody's views. We're showing the work
00:43 that we've carried out so far but we're at a really early stage and haven't
00:47 fixed anything yet. So really keen to hear everybody's views, have those
00:53 conversations, let people ask questions, answer all of those and then encourage
00:58 everybody to give us their views so that we can carefully consider that before we
01:03 draw up detailed proposals.
01:07 Councillor Jimmy Brooks, Borough of Lomosh, East Lindsay District Councillor.
01:12 Now you're here for the community, what have you learned? Pretty much similar to
01:17 what I thought originally to be fair. There's going to be some really high pylons up to
01:23 about 50 meters, about three per kilometer which I think is going to
01:28 spoil the natural beauty of Burley Marsh on the approach to it. What are
01:34 your community telling you? Most of them don't want it, the ones I've spoken to.
01:42 It's a bit like fearful isn't it, of the unknown isn't it really. But having
01:48 seen what I've seen I can't blame them to be fair. So after today what will you be
01:55 doing? I'll be filling out the consultation form, objecting to it myself
02:01 but obviously if it does go ahead I want the most for the community of Burley
02:06 Marsh. I've already talked about what grants are available, I've already said
02:11 can you not give Burley Marsh so much towards the electric bills because
02:16 all these things are going to have an impact on us so if it is coming we want
02:20 more for the community. Now you've just been speaking to National Grid
02:25 representatives at the consultation in Burley Marsh, do you feel any less worried
02:32 than when you came? Absolutely not, no. It's clear to me that National Grid are
02:40 out for profit. I'm part of the No Pylons Lincolnshire Facebook group.
02:49 We're asking National Grid to consider an integrated offshore grid as an
02:54 alternative. Why did you move there? I moved there for the peace, the quiet, the
03:01 countryside, all the positive environmental factors that are there. One of my main
03:07 concerns is that the pylons will emit a noise, they'll be buzzing day and night
03:13 but particularly noticeable at night when I like to sit out under the dark
03:17 huge dark skies and look at the stars and listen to the owls.
03:23 And so I mean the actual campaign group is growing? The campaign group has grown
03:30 massively. The Facebook group has over 2,000 members now and we've only been going for about two
03:36 Should we just start that?
