00:00 Start off with Vinny. Sean, what are your thoughts on their performance today?
00:04 Defensively, very pleasing for a large part of the game.
00:09 I think they only had three shots on target from that point of view, it's unusual when you come here.
00:14 So that side of the game I thought was very pleasing for the tactical understanding, the energy and the work ethic of the players.
00:20 The frustrating part, which don't get me wrong, it's hard to do. They react very quickly and they're good on transit.
00:25 I've said it for years, it's not just the way they play, their defensive side, the way they see the picture
00:30 and how quickly they turn their mental transition into defending when attacking.
00:35 How quickly they react to that and shut it down. So that is a challenge.
00:39 But when we had that moment, we didn't keep the ball, we didn't find the passes necessary to bring you into the game
00:44 offensively as many times as we needed to. And equally when they play the high line to try and pressure you,
00:50 we didn't find the passing behind. It's a big frustration of mine.
00:53 It's something we need to challenge the players with constantly here, is to find that passing behind.
00:57 Because we've seen it in recent weeks, a lot of teams now trying to do that, which we do as well at times,
01:04 pressing the higher line. So seeing the picture is difficult, easy for me sitting in the stand quite obviously,
01:11 not so easy when you're at pitch level. But that's part of the challenge, turning into good displays defensively
01:16 and challenges you have to turn them into offensive displays as well.
01:19 In those moments, is it belief as much as anything?
01:22 No, I think it's moments of quality. I think it's moments of finding... I mean, it can be a big task for players
01:30 because when you're in defence mode, to break from that and go into attack mode and break your shape
01:37 and use the players to break that up, that can be a big challenge. And here you do have to defend right,
01:42 everyone knows that. And I think, as I said, that's one of the main things, one of the best things Pep Guardiola's done for me
01:48 is he gets a team of really high technical players but they work very quickly in transition.
01:53 And I think that's what makes them so good. And the other thing is the belief in finding a moment.
01:58 I mean, I think with 71 minutes, first shot on target, they score a goal. And that's the thing, they are capable of doing that.
02:05 And if the 11 out there ain't doing it, they've got to bench that in bat as well, if you noticed.
02:09 You've seen the first goal back as well, was it a corner?
02:11 I'm not going to start with all that. It's the same old adage, everyone's manager's been saying it for years,
02:16 you come to these grounds, you don't often get the decisions. So it's not a major surprise it doesn't go for us.
02:21 But I'm not going to start debating an inch here and there, although it costs us, of course.
02:25 I think when you know yourselves, referees at the time, they just show whichever way they think.
02:30 I don't think there's that much thought into it. Could it go for your way, etc, etc? Hopefully it does,
02:35 but very rarely at these places.
02:37 Ultimately though, today isn't going to determine your fate in the season. So what's your message to the players?
02:43 We certainly remind them of the positives from it, because I think our defensive framework has been strong.
02:49 And I think there's always something to build on. But I think we're asking the side of more quality moments.
02:54 I think we've got some very good technicians and good technical players, but the final pass, the final moment of truth,
03:00 they're the things that the highest demand of the game is on.
03:04 The structure and organisation are often the things you can affect, and I think the players are taking that on board and delivering it.
03:09 The moments of truth are the hardest thing to coach and manage. You get them chances, you get the moment to slide the parts,
03:14 you get the moment to finish. They're the moments that we've got to continually look to find and continue to look to build on.
03:20 Finally for me, the positive, exposed minutes for Onana after a couple of weeks out?
03:24 Yes, I thought he did well when he came on. He looked bright and he's looked bright around the place, coming back from injury.
03:28 Gannis worked ever so hard again, Jimmy as well. I think two good performers in there.
03:33 Sheamus gets a few more minutes. We're beginning to get full fitness back. It's going to be important over the remaining games of the season.
03:40 We'll hopefully have better news during this week on Duke as well, being out on the grass.
03:45 Sean, Jad Brantford seems to be matched up with Harlan today. Was that deliberate, just the way things unfolded?
03:52 No, I don't do things on individuals. I've always done things on the team framework.
03:58 If we get ourselves in the right positions and we get ourselves in the right organisational footprint, if you like, that's more important than the individuals.
04:06 The players at this level, they should know about the individual they're playing against without any knowledge from the staff.
04:12 Of course, we increase that knowledge, but they should really know.
04:16 And I thought the defensive unit did well again today in many parts of the game.
04:19 I know Harlan scored a few goals, but for a long time in that game, did Brantford play a good job on him?
04:24 Yes, but that's why he is who he is. He doesn't have many touches some games, but he scores.
04:29 I think that's the key. I must say, he's finished for the first one, there's no other thought.
04:34 I've been speaking to the players recently, this ongoing thing about footballers scoring trendy goals.
04:39 Whippers, dippers, glibsers, he didn't think about that. Just score a goal.
04:43 That's the trendiest thing you'll ever do, score a goal. And he showed that today.
04:46 That's it, good technique, smashes it, don't worry about anything else.
04:50 And the second one was, Jones a bit unlucky, it's a tangle of legs. Not remotely saying it's a foul, it is literally a tangle of legs.
04:56 I don't know that he might get a foul, nowadays, who knows with football.
05:00 But he stays calm and he slots it in the corner. His conviction and his running to get there, his power and his running to get there.
05:06 That's why he is who he is and does what he does.
05:09 Sean, as you say, there's not much you can do in those moments against Harlan.
05:14 Is the key to stop him getting the ball and is that what you did so well for the first 71 minutes?
05:19 No, that wasn't the game plan. The game plan is about team performance.
05:23 He's won a group of very good players. Like I said, you saw the bench and he was bringing off the bench.
05:28 That boy De Bruyne does alright, you know. I remember when he first came here.
05:31 So, there's some power in that side. I think the focal point idea is helpful for them and the challenge for the teams.
05:39 But I think there's a lot more to the side than just him.
05:41 Paddy?
05:43 Sean, you mentioned that you feel the squad has got some good technicians.
05:47 Why do you think the goals have dried up recently? I think it's four in the last eight games.
05:52 Yes, well, like I say, they're the moments of truth. Getting in the right areas, the shot count remains high.
05:56 Not so much today. Obviously, it's tough to come here and dominate that. We all know that.
06:00 I think they're unbeaten as well here this season. It gives you a measure of where they're at.
06:04 That's the moment of truth and that's why often them players here have done that down their careers in varying positions,
06:11 not just the centre-forwards. That's why players end up being worth fortunes.
06:15 Our players are still in that growth mode, I think. Not all of them. Some are a bit more mature.
06:19 There's a lot of them still growing and I'll reference that to them after the game.
06:22 All the details of the game have to be adhered to and the final moment of truth is often the one that you challenge to be the best at.
06:28 That's a calmness, a belief in your technique and a belief in what you do in the training ground.
06:34 So that when your chance comes, that automatic behaviour kicks in. You're not searching for it because it's already there.
06:40 How much of a challenge is it going to be now, going from this kind of game where City dominate the ball,
06:45 mainly, to Crystal Palace at home, which is the next match?
06:48 We've been on the opposite side of that recently. We understand the challenge of a Premier League season.
06:54 Most of the players do. There's a couple of learners, but generally speaking, there's enough depth in our squad experience.
07:00 The depth of experience to understand that each game plays out differently.
07:05 But the framework and the belief in what we do has to be intact. I think it is. I think you can see that today.
07:10 Finding the key moments, that's the next level and we've been searching for that all season.
07:14 Just a final one for me. When do you expect Dan Juma to be back?
07:17 I'd be very surprised if he's back in a matter of a week or two. I think it'll be longer than that.
07:23 So we're just hopeful really that it saps down. But he's going along well at the moment.
07:27 OK. Thanks, folks.
07:29 Thanks, everyone. See you later.
07:31 Thank you.
