00:02 - Welcome to Style Solutions.
00:10 I'm Marina Lischt,
00:11 and as ever, I'm joined by lifestyle reporter,
00:13 Natalie Dixon.
00:14 Welcome, Natalie.
00:16 And today we're gonna be talking about hair trends,
00:20 and specifically hair trends for this year.
00:23 So hair trends for 2024.
00:25 And we're gonna start,
00:26 no, I hadn't prepared this for this specifically,
00:31 but we're gonna start,
00:32 and what I mean by is that I have the trend,
00:35 but I've had the trend for quite a while.
00:37 So we're gonna start talking about fringes.
00:40 And actually this isn't a good day for me, Natalie,
00:45 because I'd say that my fringe is not looking its best.
00:48 It actually needs,
00:50 I desperately need to go to the hairdresser
00:52 because having a fringe is quite high maintenance.
00:57 But before I move on to sort of having a fringe,
01:00 let's talk about sort of some of the celebrities.
01:03 And I'm looking at sort of celebrities in the past,
01:05 sort of icons like Brigitte Bardot,
01:08 Jane Birkin, who's absolutely definitely an icon for me.
01:14 But Natalie, I understand that,
01:17 for people who aren't familiar with fringes,
01:19 you can have all different fringes,
01:22 but what is the fringe trend for this year?
01:25 - So I think over the last couple of years,
01:28 we've sort of gone from more sort of side fringes
01:31 to a little bit, a bit flicky, a bit Frenchy
01:35 with the sort of Brigitte Bardot style.
01:36 But now the trend seems to be,
01:39 and it is quite scary for some people,
01:41 but a little bit more Taylor Swift,
01:44 full fringe and blunt.
01:46 So really quite sharp,
01:48 leaving the sides of a lot longer
01:50 so that it's really sort of the focal point of your haircut.
01:53 But it's a lot of maintenance.
01:56 - Now, I think you should reveal,
01:59 because I would definitely not class myself as a hair expert.
02:02 I like to talk about hair, I like to read about hair,
02:05 I like to follow the trends,
02:06 but Natalie, you really are an expert.
02:09 So tell everyone why.
02:11 - Yeah, so before I started writing about fashion and beauty,
02:15 I was a hairdresser in a past life for over 10 years.
02:20 I sort of went straight into working for salons.
02:23 My kind of expertise was haircutting.
02:27 So, and I always say,
02:28 I said it to every single client that had one,
02:31 but it was always cutting a blunt bob.
02:34 It was my favorite thing to do.
02:36 It was just such a beautiful haircut,
02:38 but yeah, we'll talk about bobs in a minute.
02:40 - Yeah, so just going back to fringes.
02:44 So as you were saying,
02:45 what the trend is when it comes to a fringe.
02:48 The only thing I would say is,
02:49 if you're contemplating having a fringe,
02:52 it does require maintenance.
02:53 So I would say that, you know,
02:55 it does need regular trimming.
02:57 And as I said, look at me, it's getting very long.
03:00 And I was just saying to Natalie before we came on air,
03:03 that it can be a disaster
03:06 if you get the wrong person to cut your fringe.
03:09 So I've been scarred in the past.
03:11 I know I sound a bit dramatic,
03:13 but I've literally gone somewhere local
03:16 and I thought it would be not an issue.
03:19 And then I've looked in the mirror and I thought,
03:21 are you joking me?
03:22 My fringe looks appalling.
03:25 Anyone who has a fringe
03:26 will completely understand how I feel.
03:28 So I just add a bit of caution.
03:30 If you are going for a fringe,
03:32 just be careful that it will require maintenance.
03:35 So that's just something to bear in mind.
03:38 So moving on from fringes, not fridges,
03:41 I'm gonna talk about hair bands.
03:43 So I'm sporting a fringe and a hair,
03:45 sort of hair band today.
03:47 And over the years, I absolutely adore wearing them.
03:51 I don't wear them so much at work,
03:53 but I definitely wear them more in the summer.
03:55 I think they're so pretty.
03:56 And if I'm right, Natalie,
03:57 so hair bands, hair bows,
04:00 all these hair accessories are a big trend for 2024.
04:03 Can you tell us a bit more about it?
04:05 - Yeah, the nice thing is that coming away
04:08 from sort of like, you know, the Barbie core,
04:10 the mermaid core of last year,
04:11 the trend this year in fashion seems to be a lot more
04:15 feminine, pretty, girly.
04:18 So yeah, hair bands, again, I absolutely love them.
04:22 I think they look beautiful on other people.
04:26 For me, it was always something that I had to wear
04:29 when I was little.
04:30 So I always feel like if I do have a headband on,
04:33 I look about 12.
04:34 So I do have one and I can showcase that I do
04:38 look like I'm 12, which is really sweet.
04:43 Yeah, I just think they look great on other people,
04:46 but for me, it's a no.
04:47 But yeah, if you want to look super on trend,
04:50 then, you know, grab a headband.
04:52 But also, yeah, the hair bows,
04:54 I've got two really cute ones.
04:56 Again, sort of, I feel like velvet is usually
04:59 a sort of a material for Christmas
05:03 and especially a red sort of bow.
05:05 They're quite cute,
05:07 but I think the real on-trend style this year
05:10 is a beautiful pearl style, longer sort of bow.
05:15 They are really beautiful.
05:18 And then just to kind of wear sort of,
05:20 I'd probably say more at the back.
05:22 So just a simple half up, half down,
05:24 put it at the back, which you can't probably see.
05:27 But yeah, I'd probably be careful as well
05:30 of the weight of it.
05:31 They can be quite weighty.
05:33 So the best tip is to, when you pin it back,
05:37 put it in a sort of clear elastic
05:39 and then put the bow on top
05:41 and it'll sit perfectly without pulling your hair out.
05:44 - Thanks, Ashley.
05:45 That's a great tip.
05:46 But what I was going to say about hair bands and hair bows,
05:50 I think that you can get some really pretty,
05:52 but very reasonably priced hair bands
05:55 and hair bows on the high street.
05:57 So if you're sort of conscious,
05:59 sort of just adding a bit of difference
06:01 to your outfit on a night out,
06:03 or even on a day out,
06:05 you could be going out for lunch or whatever,
06:06 I think they can really sort of give you
06:08 a sort of extra sort of twist to your outfit.
06:11 Would you agree with that?
06:12 - Yeah, completely.
06:13 You can wear just a normal outfit,
06:16 but it just adds that little bit, something extra.
06:18 So yeah, you can completely change your look
06:21 and you'd probably be surprised how many people comment
06:24 it just by adding a headband to your outfit.
06:27 - No, you're completely right.
06:29 So as I was saying at the beginning,
06:31 this wasn't intentional,
06:32 but I was obviously have a fringe.
06:35 I did obviously put the hairband.
06:36 That was an intentional decision.
06:38 But moving on to another trend,
06:40 and I have thought this for a while, Natalie,
06:42 but I'll say it in front of everyone today.
06:44 So the next trend that we're gonna be talking about
06:47 is old money blonde.
06:50 And the celebrities that come to mind
06:52 are Sienna Miller, Sophia Richie, and yourself, Natalie.
06:57 I think you simply have old money blonde hair.
07:02 Now, what does old money blonde hair mean, Natalie?
07:05 - So I'm so glad you said that
07:07 because that is definitely the look that I'm going for
07:10 with my hair color at the minute.
07:11 So the whole sort of style is almost
07:16 a sort of a little bit more sort of rooty,
07:18 a bit more of that sort of shadow effect,
07:21 quite sort of finer sort of highlights
07:24 and really quite sort of light through the ends.
07:27 So if anything, mine is probably a little bit too light
07:31 for the old money sort of style,
07:32 but a lot more sort of natural sort of blondes.
07:36 It's, again, it's kind of that quiet luxury,
07:39 that rich girl sort of fashion style
07:41 is now coming into sort of the look of your hair as well.
07:44 So old money hair color is a little bit more muted down,
07:49 toned down, and yeah,
07:51 so looking a bit more natural these days.
07:54 - So I was gonna say,
07:55 if you're saying it's more natural with sort of roots,
07:58 would you say that's sort of easier to maintain?
08:00 Because obviously we're gonna have to think about
08:02 how easy it is, how much it costs, that sort of thing
08:06 when we're discussing all things on Style Solutions.
08:09 So would you say sort of old money blonde,
08:11 isn't that difficult to maintain?
08:13 - 100%.
08:15 It's very similar to sort of the balayage sort of look,
08:20 so a little bit more rooty,
08:22 can naturally go a little bit longer
08:24 in between sort of hair colors.
08:26 But yeah, I think just having that more toned down blonde,
08:31 you don't have to use as much silver shampoo,
08:34 so that's gonna save you money as well.
08:37 But yeah, you can definitely get away with it longer.
08:41 - Which is always good, which is always good,
08:43 'cause we know how much it costs to have our hair colored
08:45 and different sort of treatments put in.
08:48 So moving from old sort of money blonde to cherry cola red,
08:53 wow, that sounds like...
08:55 So the only person, the only sort of celebrity
08:57 I've seen so far, unless I'm mistaken, Natalie, in 2024,
09:01 sporting the cherry cola red is Dua Lipa.
09:04 So can you tell us a bit more about that color
09:06 and the look that Dua Lipa has gone for?
09:09 - Yeah, I think it's for Dua Lipa,
09:13 obviously she's just been in the film "Argyle"
09:16 and she had the really blonde short bob,
09:20 which was beautiful,
09:21 and now she's gone the complete opposite,
09:23 really deep, rich, dark red.
09:27 I love the name cherry cola because it's just fun and cute
09:30 and everybody knows cherry cola,
09:33 but it's a little bit more vampy.
09:35 I think that, again, she's been wearing
09:39 a lot of sort of lacy dresses, a lot of black,
09:41 so it looks really, really good.
09:43 I think that it is meant to be the color of the year,
09:48 but I still feel like it's a very wintry,
09:51 autumny sort of color.
09:52 So I think that for spring, summer,
09:55 the old money blonde is probably the best way to go,
09:57 whereas I think coming back in the more autumn,
10:00 it will sort of come back around.
10:02 But yeah, just off the top of my head,
10:04 I think Megan Fox was always,
10:07 of course, years ago, Rihanna was great for red hair,
10:11 that was a little bit brighter,
10:13 but I think Megan Fox now has decided
10:15 she's a bit more pinky, Barbie pink.
10:17 So, but yeah, Dua Lipa's definitely
10:19 showing everyone the way to do it.
10:23 - So from cherry cola red, which is a color trend,
10:27 to more of a style, a cut,
10:30 and going back to what you said, Natalie,
10:32 when you were in your hair, when you were a hairdresser,
10:34 you loved cutting bobs,
10:36 but the bobs that we're gonna be talking about
10:38 are sort of the Italian style bob and the French bob,
10:42 and the celebrities that come to mind
10:44 when it comes to this bob are like the supermodel,
10:47 Kaia Gerber and Hailey Bieber.
10:49 So can you tell me a bit more about,
10:51 they sound like very glamorous,
10:54 sort of I feel like, oh God, the Italian bob,
10:56 the French bob, I immediately want to think,
10:59 oh, I wanna have that.
11:00 But for those of us who sort of aren't quite sure
11:03 what an Italian or a French bob is,
11:05 could you explain a bit more, Natalie, about them?
11:08 - Yeah, I would say if they do sound super glamorous,
11:12 especially if you're going to the hair salon
11:14 and sitting there and thinking,
11:15 yeah, I want a French bob,
11:17 seeing all the celebrities with it,
11:18 I definitely want that,
11:19 you've gotta be really careful
11:21 because actually a French bob is cut right to the jawline,
11:25 it just sort of skims sort of here.
11:27 So even if you sort of went from my length to a French bob,
11:31 it's really quite severe and quite harsh.
11:34 It all tends to be one length,
11:36 so you can sort of ruch it up a little bit with your hands,
11:39 but yeah, that's the main sort of key difference
11:42 between a French bob.
11:44 Now with an Italian bob, it's more,
11:46 a little bit more my length,
11:48 so slightly shorter than what you'd call like a lob,
11:51 like a long bob.
11:54 And for the fact that you've got a little bit more layers
11:57 through it, only slightly though,
11:58 the layers are always kept a little bit longer,
12:00 you can sort of wave it and curl it
12:02 so you get a little bit more versatility from it.
12:05 But yeah, I'd probably say the Italian bob
12:08 is a lot more popular,
12:10 but people think it's the French bob,
12:12 so it's making sure you're saying the right things,
12:15 you hairdresser.
12:16 - Yeah, I always think it's always advisable,
12:20 I don't know whether you'd agree, Natalie,
12:21 to have reference points when you go in.
12:24 Although I sometimes think they don't listen
12:26 and look at them.
12:28 I'm over the years supporting so many photographs now,
12:31 I used to bring them in and sort of
12:32 take them out of magazines,
12:33 now I just show them on my phone.
12:35 Do you think that's a good idea?
12:37 - 100%, yeah.
12:38 A good hairdresser will listen.
12:41 They will give you advice and they will say,
12:43 honesty is the best policy.
12:46 The customer's not always right,
12:48 so if you'd come and say,
12:51 I want a really sharp French bob
12:54 and it's not gonna suit your face,
12:55 it's not gonna suit your day-to-day lifestyle,
12:59 what you do,
13:01 then yeah, a good hairdresser will tell you
13:03 that's not gonna work or that will work for you.
13:05 So yeah, pictures are always good to go.
13:08 Sometimes you do look at a picture
13:11 and it could be Hailey Bieber with this beautiful haircut
13:15 and she's got all her makeup done
13:18 and her stylist is with her.
13:20 And yeah, sometimes you need to remember
13:22 it's the haircut you're looking at
13:24 and not Hailey Bieber 'cause, you know,
13:27 they're great hairdressers
13:28 but they can only work so much magic.
13:30 - That's a great point, Natalie, to end on.
13:33 Thank you for that
13:35 and thank you for joining us this week on Style Solutions.
13:39 - Thank you.
