00:00 - I'm Avery Thompson, Hollywood Live.
00:01 Hi, Mr. Malkovich.
00:03 - Hi. - Thank you so much
00:03 for taking the time to chat with me.
00:06 - My pleasure.
00:08 - You know, tell me a little bit about the partnership
00:10 between Lucien and Christian Dior,
00:13 and what does that look like
00:14 over the course of this series?
00:17 - Well, Lucien Lilon was a gentleman
00:23 who had his own fashion house.
00:27 He wasn't in any way a kind of designer of note or anything,
00:32 but he had a pretty fine eye and nose for talent.
00:38 And among the people who worked at the Long studio
00:43 were Christian Dior, Givenchy, Balmain, Balenciaga,
00:49 Pierre Cardin, and on and on and on.
00:55 So he had a very good eye for talent.
00:57 And I think Dior, who was very, very gifted,
01:02 flourished under Lilon's guidance, I guess you would say.
01:09 I think Dior was someone very, very talented,
01:21 hyper sensitive, difficult,
01:26 probably most especially at that time,
01:31 because that was a time where homosexuals
01:34 couldn't live openly,
01:36 where it wasn't accepted by society, unfortunately.
01:43 And that was a real torture for many people
01:48 who couldn't live honestly and live openly,
01:56 at least as openly as any person can live,
02:00 which may not be so much, or so honestly.
02:06 But I think they were a good duo in that way,
02:11 because I think Lilon was able to manage
02:19 Dior's sensitivities and helped him
02:25 make beautiful work, kept him employed during the war.
02:30 Actually, Dior was in the military,
02:37 but kept him employed during the occupation
02:43 and was someone who had a great role to play
02:51 in keeping the French fashion business in France,
02:56 rather than having it transferred to Berlin,
03:00 which was one dream and goal of the Nazis.
03:05 So I think they were a pretty good pairing, I'd say.
03:10 - A duo.
03:12 Over the course of this project,
03:15 has this experience sort of made you look at fashion
03:18 or the artistry of it differently now?
03:20 - No, no, I always had great respect
03:24 for the work of fashion.
03:26 I did 24, 26 collections myself under different lines.
03:31 And it's a lot of work.
03:37 It's a very beautiful work.
03:41 The creative part of it, very compelling, very interesting.
03:49 Because not unlike cinema or theater
03:54 or some other forms I work in, it's only about details.
04:00 And that's something that always compels
04:05 and intrigues me, why this and not that?
04:15 And so I always had great respect for designers
04:20 and it was something I was always interested in.
04:25 - Well, thank you so much for your time
04:29 and congrats on the show. - My pleasure.
04:30 - It's absolutely stunning.
04:31 - Oh, thank you, thank you so much.
