00:00 In the working-class days of the month of Sahud,
00:02 there's good news.
00:03 The amount of P100 that is rolling in the Senate is rising.
00:07 But the group of businessmen is worried
00:09 that the prices will rise because of that.
00:13 What do you think of the increase?
00:15 It was discussed by the witness, Jamie Santos.
00:18 Dexter is a barista in a coffee shop.
00:24 His salary is paid by his parents
00:28 but despite his budget, he still lacks income.
00:32 We really need to increase our income
00:34 because nowadays, it's expensive to buy food.
00:40 So we really need to increase our income.
00:43 Aljon is a food crew member and has his own family.
00:46 He's a foodie so he can provide his four-year-old son
00:51 with food from milk and diapers.
00:53 It's hard now.
00:54 Sales are rising.
00:57 So we need to increase our income.
01:02 Last night, the Senate passed a bill
01:06 to increase the P100 daily minimum wage
01:09 in the private sector in the country.
01:12 Now, the minimum wage in Metro Manila is P610.
01:17 The salary in some regions is lower.
01:20 It's time to help our workers
01:24 who are facing high prices and basic utilities.
01:30 The House of Representatives has long been
01:32 in favor of increasing wages.
01:34 Congressmen are balancing the interests
01:37 of businessmen and workers.
01:40 If we increase our salary,
01:42 our businessmen should be able to afford it.
01:45 In the Philippines, 98 to 99 percent of the business sector
01:49 are MSMEs, small businessmen.
01:53 The party of workers is lacking
01:56 in the P100 increase in their salary.
01:59 Even if we increase the P100,
02:01 we can still recover the purchasing power of P610
02:04 from inflation or the price of electricity.
02:07 The Employers Confederation of the Philippines, or ECOP,
02:10 has approved the P100 daily minimum wage increase.
02:15 It's okay if P30 or P60 increase.
02:19 But the P100, that's a catastrophe.
02:22 If the increase in expenses is passed on to the consumer,
02:25 it will have a domino effect on other countries.
02:28 According to ECOP, out of the 52 million in the labor force,
02:32 only 5 million or 10 percent will benefit from the increase.
02:36 While 90 percent is in the informal sector,
02:39 like fishermen, farmers, ambulance vendors,
02:43 PUV drivers, and those in construction
02:46 who have no employer.
02:47 No one will get a raise in their salary.
02:50 It's a balance because there are times when there's no preparation
02:54 or there's a sudden increase.
02:57 It really has an effect on our employment level,
03:01 inflation rate, and also on the targeted GDP growth.
