Analyzing whether San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy ever will win a Super Bowl as a starter.
Transcript
00:00 Will Brock, these are tough questions that Kyle Shanahan needs to ask when he's standing in front of his
00:05 mirror late at night, mirror, mirror on the wall.
00:08 Will Brock Purdy ever win a ring as a starter?
00:11 Oh my gosh.
00:14 No.
00:16 Oh.
00:18 No.
00:19 I don't think so.
00:20 I wasn't expecting you to say that.
00:21 No.
00:22 Why?
00:23 Well, a couple of reasons.
00:26 One, you look at the salary cap area.
00:29 We've had 29 Super Bowls in the salary cap area.
00:32 Every single one of those Super Bowls has been won by a quarterback that is either elite,
00:40 getting paid a lot of money, or a non-elite quarterback who is getting paid peanuts, basically.
00:47 Brock Purdy right now fits that description for sure.
00:50 We don't know if he'll be elite.
00:52 My guess is he's not going to be elite, and that's why I'm saying no.
00:56 But right now, he fits the description of very inexpensive quarterback, which means
01:01 they had a chance, obviously, to win the Super Bowl this year, and they have a chance next
01:06 year while he's inexpensive.
01:08 I think with him not being elite, if they pay him, he's a top 12, top 15 guy, those
01:17 guys get paid, but those guys don't win rings while they're being paid.
01:21 It's happened throughout the course of all of the salary cap area, from your Phillip
01:26 Rivers to your Matt Ryans to your Dak Prescott's to your Kirk Cousins, your Kyler Murray's,
01:33 whoever.
01:34 Think of guys that are borderline top 10 that aren't elite, and those guys don't win rings
01:40 when they get paid.
01:41 So unless he's going to be elite, then no, he's not ever going to win as a starter unless
01:46 it happens this next year while he's inexpensive.
01:49 And I just look at the year that the 49ers had, everything was lined up perfectly for
01:53 them to win.
01:54 Injuries were on their side.
01:56 The NFC was as down as it has ever been.
01:59 I think the NFC will be better next year.
02:01 I can't guarantee that injuries will be on their side, and just climbing that mountain
02:05 after falling off the way they did is extremely hard to do.
02:08 So no, I don't think he will.
02:10 - You're a hater.
02:12 - I know I am.
02:14 - I'm going to be a little more optimistic than you.
02:16 I think there's a world where Brock Purdy can win a Super Bowl.
02:19 I think he's got a golden opportunity next year.
02:21 Now it really sucks that he's in the same era as Patrick Mahomes.
02:24 That's not fair.
02:25 But hey, maybe someone else will knock off the Chiefs next year.
02:28 So he's got a legit chance next year.
02:30 And as you said, if he starts making $50, $60 million a year, he's not going to win a Super Bowl.
02:35 But perception changes quickly.
02:38 I mean, look at a quarterback like Baker Mayfield.
02:41 He's great.
02:42 No, he's trash.
02:43 No, he's pretty freaking good.
02:44 Things can change really quickly, and Brock Purdy could go from being underrated to overrated to underrated again.
02:54 He could be paid, cut, bounced around, and all of a sudden he winds up on some team in his early 30s,
03:01 and boom, he wins a Super Bowl.
03:03 He's a good quarterback, and I think he's a little overrated right now.
03:07 If he had won the Super Bowl, my goodness.
03:09 But there could be a world in a year or two where he's underrated.
03:13 So I'm not going to write that off just yet, but your logic checks out.
03:17 He's in the danger zone.
03:19 He's going to be in the Kirk Cousins zone, and you don't win Super Bowls there.
03:21 Yeah, I mean, can he win a Super Bowl?
03:24 Yes, but we're being bold here, Grant.
03:26 Will he?
03:27 The answer is no.
03:28 I don't like being bold.
