00:05 Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at bands that may have seen some major success in
00:11 the pop punk scene, but have since left the spotlight.
00:14 "Rock me down to East Seattle, I'm on fire."
00:18 Number 10 - Boys Like Girls.
00:20 "Tied down in the summer sun, the day we met was like a hit and run."
00:26 These boys had all of our middle school hearts claiming to be love drunk.
00:30 Boys Like Girls emerged on the scene in the mid-2000s, gaining nearly immediate success.
00:35 "I used to be love drunk, now I'm a no-drunk. I love you forever, forever is over."
00:42 Their self-titled debut album launched the band into the mainstream,
00:46 and earned gold status, which really isn't hard to believe since it featured hits like
00:51 "The Great Escape." "Forget yesterday, we'll make the great escape."
00:58 Suddenly, spilling your feelings for a girl in a song was hyper-popular.
01:02 The boys toured endlessly during their peak, before going on a hiatus and focusing on
01:06 independent projects. Though certain members have since been replaced,
01:10 the band released a new album in 2023.
01:13 "I need a miracle."
01:20 Number 9 - Busted
01:21 "Her voice is a code in my mind, I count the days till she is mine."
01:28 You may not remember this band, but you definitely know one of their biggest hits.
01:32 Hailing from the UK, the group's sound was comparable to that of many American acts of
01:37 the period. "What I've known so far."
01:42 Several of their songs topped the UK charts between the years 2000 and 2004,
01:47 but many of you will recognize them from the year 3000. You heard that correctly.
01:52 Busted is the original performer of the iconic song famously covered by the Jonas Brothers.
01:58 "Back to the year 3000, not much to say, it's like the end of the world."
02:05 The band's ability to transcend generations through their music is remarkable.
02:10 You can also hear their influence in many other successors in the genre.
02:14 The band even formed a supergroup with McFly to become McBusted.
02:18 "Where'd you go? I'd be the best without you."
02:25 Number 8 - The Pink Spiders
02:27 "Hey, hey, little razor blade, girl, you're so, so dangerous."
02:33 Picture this - you're at the mall, you duck under a faux roof into a barely-lit
02:38 beachy clothing store. What's playing on the sound system? Probably the Pink Spiders.
02:43 The Nashville natives fulfilled their Hollywood dreams when a performance
02:46 at the legendary Viper Room landed them a major record deal.
02:50 "They wanna try and get away, and that's just so obvious."
02:57 Their debut single, "Little Razor Blade," was plastered all over MTV,
03:01 skyrocketing the band to success. With a spot-on Warped tour and a song featured on the hills,
03:08 it's hard to believe they fizzled out of the spotlight. Conflicts with Geffen Records and
03:12 turmoil within the group led to a major hiatus.
03:15 "Take me anywhere, send me a sign."
03:18 Number 7 - Allister
03:20 "Somewhere down in Fullerton, that's the place we used to go to get away from it all."
03:25 Formed in the 90s, the band began gaining traction in the early aughts.
03:29 You might know them from their ballad to Chicago, "Somewhere on Fullerton,"
03:34 which was featured in the video game Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure.
03:38 Or maybe you recognize them from the coming-of-age classic "Sleepover."
03:41 "Stuck here forever, breakout today, I'm throwing my fears away."
03:48 Remember the band playing at the school dance? Well, that's Allister performing their hit "Stuck."
03:53 In addition to their on-screen debut, their second album landed them on the
03:56 Billboard charts and earned them a world tour.
03:59 "So please don't go away."
04:03 They became very accomplished while in Japan,
04:06 and lead singer Scott Murphy went solo and signed with Universal Music in Japan.
04:11 "Stay with me."
04:16 Number 6 - Valencia
04:18 "There's something strange going on in my head. It says if I were to get in a car right now."
04:24 This band was formed in the early 2000s, but the individual players were no novices.
04:29 Each member had previously played with other bands, who toured together in the early days.
04:34 "Can't help but blue sky, sunrise, no space between."
04:40 Like many other pop-punk veterans, Valencia graced the band's Warped tour.
04:44 Playing tracks like "Where Did You Go," the band shared the stage with industry icons like
04:48 Blink-182, New Found Glory, and All Time Low.
04:52 "I get a little down on myself, I'm fusing around my world without you."
04:58 Unfortunately, the band temporarily disbanded following the tragic death of drummer Maxim Soria.
05:04 After several years of dormancy, Valencia played a few reunion shows and even released
05:09 some singles.
05:10 "You're the one, you're the one for me."
05:14 Number 5 - Forever The Sickest Kids
05:17 "I'm a candy-coating cover everything, but I'm still hiding underneath. It's been a long time,
05:23 it's been a long time."
05:24 Even if you weren't into pop-punk, you probably knew these guys.
05:28 Created by members from three different starter bands,
05:31 the swoopy-haired six-piece quickly swept the scene.
05:34 "Whoa, whoa, whoa, why do I put myself in this situation?"
05:41 Their first single, "Whoa-Oh! Me vs. Everyone," became a fan favorite,
05:46 and even earned a feature from Disney Channel alum Selena Gomez.
05:50 During their peak, you could hear them on just about any popular radio station,
05:54 on Warped tour, or even in mainstream film and television.
05:58 "She's a lady in lace, shouldn't be messed with."
06:04 Even with accolades from many revered music magazines and iconic performances,
06:08 the band's fame fizzled out with the end of their Warped tour run.
06:12 FTSK has since teased a reunion, but have not released any new music as of 2023.
06:17 "I never called a nice to meet you."
06:20 Number 4 - Say Anything
06:22 "Baby girl, I'm a blur. I spoiled, stunted, sick in her."
06:29 Exemplifying the quintessential LA pop-punk sound,
06:32 Say Anything contended with many other leaders in the genre.
06:36 Their Californian, elongated vowel singing style basically defines that era of music.
06:41 "You're a sick machine, but we're the sleepin' men."
06:45 When they released their first album, Unsigned, they created a buzz among major labels.
06:50 They eventually signed with Doghouse Records, which was also home to the All-American Rejects.
06:56 The band toured with other successful names in the scene,
06:59 and had several popular tracks like "Shixa," "Girlfriend."
07:02 "I have a girlfriend now."
07:07 The group struggled, however, with internal problems surrounding singer
07:11 Max Bemis' battle with mental illness.
07:13 Despite rising popularity, label switches and changing of band members
07:17 proved to be a setback for Say Anything.
07:19 "I hate everyone. I hate everyone."
07:26 Number 3. SR-71
07:28 "Do you wonder why I'm scared?"
07:33 Entering the scene in the late 90s, this band had the recipe for success.
07:37 Under the wing of a team of high-powered producers,
07:40 SR-71 released their first studio album, Now You See Inside.
07:44 It generated a lot of buzz as the guys crept their way onto the Billboard charts.
07:49 Undoubtedly, their single "Right Now" proved to be their most popular song,
07:54 accompanied by an iconic music video featuring the band evading a bunch of groupies.
07:59 "Well, I know she may not feel this right, but she'll do right now."
08:05 The song was even featured in "Dude, Where's My Car?"
08:08 "You got a tattoo. So what are you gonna do with it?"
08:11 "I don't know what a tattoo says."
08:12 "Sweet! What about mine?"
08:14 "Dude!"
08:15 They also penned an unforgettable hit covered by another pop-punk icon,
08:19 1985, for "Bowling for Soup."
08:22 With what seemed to be a bright future ahead of them,
08:25 interest in their music sloped before changing directions in genre and label.
08:29 "And I don't need a piss, she holds the things I might say."
08:34 Number 2. Cute Is What We Aim For
08:36 "What you got now? Gotta, gotta give it up."
08:39 Bordering both pop-punk and emo,
08:42 Cute Is What We Aim For created a perfect storm for success in the era.
08:46 With the aid of fellow rockers Hawthorne Heights,
08:49 they were able to drum up quite the audience.
08:51 They also caught the attention of pop-punk label Fueled By Ramen.
08:54 "Want someone provocative and talkative, but it's so hard when you're shallow in the shower."
09:01 The group reached critical acclaim both from the public and on the charts.
09:05 But by the mid-2010s, their fame began to dwindle.
09:08 After several breakups, the boys reunited briefly in 2019,
09:12 but have not released any music since, or been active on their social accounts.

09:38 #1 Hey Monday
09:41 This female-fronted powerhouse dove head-first into a male-dominated genre and came out on top.
09:53 With the aptly named hit "Homecoming," the Florida-born band secured their spot in the scene.
09:58 Who better to have as your advocate than Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz?
10:08 Wentz helped them sign with not one, but two acclaimed record labels,
10:12 and asked them to tour with his band. Even with the group's lineup being so fragile,
10:17 they still dominated the Warped Tour and Bamboozle stages.
10:21 After only three years, Hey Monday dissolved.
10:31 However, you may recognize singer Cassidy Pope from Season 3 of The Voice.
10:35 She was the program's first female winner, and has since carried her triumph into a solo career.
