Analyzing why the San Francisco 49ers should replace Steve Wilks with an internal hire at defensive coordinator.
Transcript
00:00 Who will, should, whatever, replace Steve Wilkes who got fired today?
00:06 Man, that happened fast.
00:07 72 hours, you're gone.
00:09 That did happen really, really fast.
00:13 Man, messed up too.
00:17 It's like, "Hey, you want to be a DC this year?
00:19 Sorry, there's no jobs available, but thanks for everything."
00:21 Yeah, yeah, pretty much, pretty much.
00:23 I mean, to me, I think they should keep it in-house
00:28 because he clearly wants the defense to run a certain way.
00:30 I know that a lot of people are going to throw out guys like Pete Carroll and Belichick and
00:36 who's the linebacker?
00:40 Brian Frabel, Brian Flores, which all kinds of guys.
00:42 All those guys, right?
00:43 And they're all great.
00:44 But how many of them, okay, how many of those guys,
00:50 one would take the job because most of them want to be head coaches.
00:55 Flores, let's look at him for a second.
00:58 Super blitz heavy.
00:59 Blitz is more than pretty much anybody.
01:02 Is that something that Kyle's going to be willing to live with?
01:04 I don't know about that.
01:05 So for me, keep this in-house.
01:08 Go with somebody that you know, somebody that knows the system,
01:11 somebody who's young and energetic, somebody who is an ex-player.
01:14 It's Bullocks.
01:16 That's the answer.
01:17 He's in-house.
01:17 He's been here for seven years.
01:19 You look at the safety position and how he's developed a lot of those guys.
01:23 I think that that is the right answer.
01:26 He's only 40.
01:28 Go with him.
01:28 Sorry, say again.
01:30 Who's the right answer?
01:31 Bullocks.
01:32 Yeah.
01:33 Well, I don't, here's the thing.
01:34 I don't know that he's the right answer, but I think he's going to be the guy.
01:37 And here's my logic.
01:38 He's the right answer for Kyle.
01:40 Well, because that's different than the right answer.
01:45 Right.
01:45 The right answer could be someone from outside, but I don't think Kyle can do that again,
01:49 because he just tried to bring in someone from the outside and it didn't work.
01:51 It was a failed experiment.
01:55 So to try to go outside the organization again would be repeating a mistake.
02:00 And it seems like the players in particular, remember, like there's some really, really
02:06 rich players on this team on defense that have a lot of say guys who make more money than Kyle,
02:11 Nick Bosa, Eric Armstead, Fred Warner, a lot of guys.
02:15 And it seemed like, I mean, Fred Warner, I'm not saying he,
02:18 I'm not saying he didn't want Steve Wilkes.
02:22 I don't know about that.
02:24 But it seems pretty clear that these players want a certain style and a certain terminology
02:28 and a certain scheme.
02:29 And I think you got to go with Bullocks or else they'll complain.
02:33 And I think Kyle is in a position where everyone knows he messed up.
02:38 He has to like a placate his players.
02:40 It's like, okay, okay, okay.
02:41 Look, look, look, look, look, look, I blew it.
02:42 Don't get mad at me, though.
02:44 I'll fire Steve Wilkes.
02:46 I'll hire whoever you want.
02:48 And we're good, right?
02:49 We're good.
02:49 You want Bullocks?
02:50 I got you.
02:50 I'll go Bullocks is great.
02:51 I like Bullocks too.
02:52 Let's do Bullocks.
02:52 That's what kind of what it feels like to me, a concession from a coach who's not so
02:56 strong right now.
02:56 Yeah, I mean, I agree with that.
03:01 For me, I would go Flores.
03:04 I like aggressive coaches, guys that are going to blitz a ton.
03:09 We just saw it happen in the Super Bowl.
03:11 And we saw what a defense in Minnesota that he was handling this year that blitzed heavy.
03:16 They were pretty good without a lot of talent there.
03:20 Imagine what he could do with all this talent showing all the exotic blitzes,
03:24 backing out of those blitzes.
03:25 For me, that's what I would prefer to go with, but I think keeping it in-house going with
03:32 Daniel Bullocks.
03:33 And I thought that Daniel Bullocks should have been really one of the guys last year
03:37 that they were considering and never seemed to be the case.
03:40 But again, he's been here for seven years.
03:42 He was here through Sala.
03:43 He was here through D'Amico Ryan, Steve Wilkes.
03:45 Why not him?
03:49 Yeah, I just don't think that you have these players who are very confident in their view
03:55 of football.
03:56 Nick Bosa, Fred Warner.
03:57 This is how we play.
03:58 This is what we've been doing.
03:58 This is how this is what works.
04:00 They don't want to have some guy come in from the outside and be like, "No, no, no.
04:03 That's how we're going to do it."
04:04 Fred, I'm overruling you.
04:06 Nick, I'm overruling you.
04:07 I know better.
04:08 I mean, I know these guys.
04:09 They're just not going to accept it.
04:10 Listen to how they talk about football.
04:12 They know.
04:12 They're the coaches.
04:13 So I think what they want is someone who they know, who they feel friendly with.
04:18 Who will, you know, praise them, empower them.
04:22 Maybe that's what they need.
04:23 I mean, how much is that not what D'Amico Ryan's did?
04:26 I'm sorry.
04:27 They didn't do a whole lot.
04:28 I mean, I think they want their friend to be their coach.
04:34 I think they look at-
04:35 Well, I, yeah.
04:38 I mean, I don't necessarily disagree with that.
04:40 I, but I think also being an ex-player, that's built in cache.
04:45 I feel like ex-players always have built in cache with current players.
04:49 And it's just something into that.
04:51 There's camaraderie.
04:52 You also, you just know the locker room dynamics.
04:55 You know your way around a locker room and how players want to be coached and meeting
05:00 them where they want to be met.
05:01 So I don't think it's a bad hire by any means.
05:04 Again, it wouldn't be my first choice, but I think for what Kyle is looking for and frankly,
05:10 what Kyle needs, I mean, that's probably the best fit.
05:14 Probably the best fit.
