How New York Giants may approach quarterback this year

00:00 I believe with the quarterback situation, what the Giants are going to do is sort of
00:05 similar to what they did when they brought in Tyrod Taylor.
00:08 If you remember, they signed Tyrod Taylor because they weren't really sure what they
00:12 were going to get from Daniel Jones at the time.
00:15 They had declined his fifth year option and they brought in Tyrod Taylor and they structured
00:20 that contract in such a way that if Taylor started, he got a bump in his pay raise.
00:27 If he didn't, then he had a modest salary that he earned as the backup.
00:33 The difference here though is that if the Giants do add a young quarterback, and again,
00:38 I do think they will, not necessarily in round one, unless they buck the trends and they
00:46 go up and they trade for one, which I still say doesn't make sense, at least as of this
00:52 already, but I do think a quarterback is in the mix.
00:58 The reason why I say it kind of makes sense to run it back with Daniel Jones, if he is
01:03 healthy, is twofold.
01:07 Number one, we all know he's going to be on the roster.
01:10 His salary cap figure makes it impossible for the Giants to cut him.
01:16 They're just not getting rid of him.
01:18 Whether you like it or not, he's going to be on this roster.
01:22 Now this is of course the escape patch here.
01:26 After this year, the Giants can move on from him if they want to.
01:30 So let's say, for example, the Giants bring in a veteran.
01:34 Let's just pick a name out of the hat.
01:35 Let's say it's Jacoby Brissett.
01:38 They draft the quarterback in the second round.
01:40 Again, let's pick a name out of the hat.
01:41 Let's say it's JJ McCarthy out of Michigan.
01:45 Do you honestly think JJ McCarthy is going to be ready to roll week one?
01:50 Probably not.
01:51 They're going to probably want to develop him a little bit, help him acclimate to the
01:55 NFL, get him ready, learn the offense, make sure that the offensive line is stabilized,
02:02 get the receiving game up to snuff, have everything ready for when the transition ultimately comes.
02:10 So in the interim, you have Daniel Jones who knows the system.
02:17 You let him play it out.
02:19 For as long as he's healthy, you let him play it out.
02:22 So this way you can take your time.
02:24 If you do bring in a young player, you can develop him.
02:27 You don't have to rush him out there.
