00:00 lift every voice and sing.
00:07 Andra Day kicks off Super Bowl 58 with the first performance of the night, belting out
00:11 her own rendition of the Black National Anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing," moments before
00:16 the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers hit the field.
00:20 I was so nervous, but very, very excited, grateful.
00:23 We sing a rising sun, a new day begun.
00:38 It's an honor to be singing the Black National Anthem in the same breath as the amazing Cherilee
00:45 Ralph.
00:46 I think it's a really important song and an important moment, you know, not just because
00:52 of me singing it, but just the song at the Super Bowl itself is an important moment.
00:55 I've done anthems before.
00:56 I will say I did stop doing anthems until the Black National Anthem was a greater part
01:02 of the conversation.
01:03 So I was like, I'm not going to sing the traditional one until we actually include, you know, this
01:09 one.
01:10 So it's really exciting.
01:11 Let us march on to victory.
01:28 This season of my life has been more focused on acting, you know, which is interesting.
01:32 So getting back into music, singing on such a big stage, you know, I definitely get nervous,
01:37 but I am a person who loves God and trusts God.
01:40 And so I'm, you know, if I'm here and I got the call, then it's where I'm supposed to
01:46 be.
01:47 Andra, who got the call to take on the performance in November, reflects on this landmark moment
01:51 in her career by sharing what she would tell her younger self, hoping to get noticed.
01:57 I would say to her, the thing that I always say, which is, I would say, trust God.
02:04 God really does have a plan.
02:06 And that plan is to prosper you.
02:08 You know what I mean?
02:09 I love that scripture and to give you a hope and a future.
02:12 And I would also say to her, you are a slow burn and that's okay.
02:16 Take your time.
02:17 It's what you're wired to do.
02:18 You're not broken.
02:20 You're not doing things wrong.
02:21 You're not as good because you're not moving as fast as other people.
02:25 You're a slow burn.
02:26 And that's how you're supposed to be.
