00:00 "Why do we have to fight?"
00:01 [Laughs]
00:02 Welcome to WatchMojo,
00:04 and today we're counting down our picks for the top 20 Jon Stewart moments
00:08 from The Daily Show and beyond.
00:10 "And chaos, it can't sustain itself. It never could."
00:15 It should come as no surprise that Stewart has cited legendary comedian George Carlin as an influence.
00:26 "Watching you work is almost like watching a musician.
00:28 You know, the way you weave words and use language for emphasis and all that.
00:33 Was that always a fascination for you, even as a kid?"
00:35 "Well, to go backwards with the question, don't forget what we do is oratory. It's rhetoric."
00:41 Both he and the late Carlin are famous for using their wit and words to point out hypocrisy
00:47 from those in power and other societal issues.
00:49 In 1997, Stewart hosted the special honoring Carlin and his career.
00:54 He also sat down with him for an interview, which provided invaluable insight into one of the greatest comedic minds of all time.
01:01 "You gotta have luck in this world. Part of it's your genetic makeup, that's luck.
01:05 And then what you do with it is also partly genetic, because hard work is genetic.
01:11 The desire to do hard work, the willingness to work hard."
01:14 Stewart is clearly enthralled to be in the presence of one of his idols,
01:18 but he also knows how to ask pointed questions that inspire meaningful responses.
01:23 "Why do you still care so much?"
01:24 "Well, I'm not comparing myself to any of these people, believe me.
01:28 But you wouldn't say to Picasso, 'When are you gonna put those brushes down?
01:33 Get rid of the canvas, you've done it.'"
01:35 As both a comedian and an interviewer, Stewart has clearly learned from the best.
01:40 "It's been great to get to know you a little, and you are gonna show us a lot, and I look forward to it."
01:45 "Thank you very much, sir. I appreciate it."
01:47 "George Carlin, ladies and gentlemen."
01:49 Number 19 - Cheney's Got a Gun - The Daily Show
01:53 In 2006, then-Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot
01:57 attorney Harry Whittington during a quail hunt.
01:59 "Making 78-year-old Harry Whittington the first person shot by a sitting veep
02:05 since Alexander Hamilton."
02:07 Naturally, late-night talk show comedians jumped on this incident,
02:12 but it's Stewart's take that's truly worth preserving.
02:15 Before diving in, he gives thanks for what is sure to be a comedy goldmine.
02:19 "Thank you, Jesus."
02:22 But Stewart doesn't just rely on the absurdity of the incident for laughs.
02:28 He also finds other layers, such as questioning the concept of the hunting expedition in question.
02:34 "The vice president and two others got out of the car to walk up the covey."
02:38 "What kind of hunting story begins with 'getting out of your car'?"
02:45 He also deftly ribs the VP's behavior in the aftermath,
02:48 before leaving parents watching at home with some valuable wisdom.
02:52 "Don't let your kids go hunting with the vice president."
02:54 Number 18 - Indecision 2004 - The Daily Show
03:00 Stewart's tenure hosting The Daily Show was full of highlights from beginning to end,
03:04 but arguably, he was at the height of his powers during the 2004 US presidential election.
03:09 "The 2004 presidential election is well underway,
03:12 and the two major parties are very much in the thick of the battle."
03:15 Stewart and his equally hilarious correspondence offered the perfect skewering of that year's
03:19 political contest, and the various players involved, including incumbent president George W. Bush
03:25 and Democratic challenger Senator John Kerry.
03:28 "Office work. You know, ordering some office supplies, approving expense reports,
03:33 figuring out what he stands for."
03:37 And what ensued was must-watch television that still holds up two decades later.
03:43 This coverage, equal parts informative and uproarious,
03:46 earned Stewart's Daily Show its second Peabody Award.
03:49 Making political satire this funny is serious business.
03:53 "But we thank you so much, and we can't wait to come back to another unbelievably long lunch."
03:58 Number 17 - Bush v. Bush - The Daily Show
04:02 If there's one area in which Stewart particularly excels,
04:06 it's in pointing out hypocrisies, particularly those from elected officials.
04:10 "Mr. President, is the idea to just build a new country that we like better?"
04:14 "We will tear down the apparatus of terror, and we will help you to build a new Iraq
04:19 that is prosperous and free."
04:22 "I don't think our troops ought to be used for what's called nation building."
04:25 In this segment from 2003, Stewart uses video evidence to show the contrasts between George W.
04:31 Bush, the presidential candidate, and George W. Bush, the president. Namely, he points out how
04:36 the 43rd president did and said things that contradicted statements made on the road to
04:41 the White House.
04:41 "But then, Governor, answer this. How do you propose we nation build? Would you use diplomacy?"
04:46 "Let me say this to you. I wouldn't use force. I wouldn't use force."
04:50 Bush is obviously not the first, nor the last, politician to not live up to their words on the
04:55 campaign trail. But the clever editing and Stewart's commitment to the bit make this a
05:00 masterful demonstration of his abilities.
05:02 "And may God continue to bless America."
05:04 "Wow. Incredibly insincere. Governor, can you top that?"
05:09 "Thanks. Thanks from the bottom of my heart."
05:11 "Nice. Wow."
05:15 Number 16. Defending trans rights. The problem with Jon Stewart.
05:20 In the second season premiere of his Apple TV+ show, Stewart addressed the ongoing moral panic
05:25 regarding issues of gender, particularly trans rights.
05:28 "What could justify this unprecedented urgency? Did trans people storm the Capitol?"
05:33 He alludes to his own history of making insensitive jokes on the subject while
05:36 also demonstrating growth since then. The best part of the episode comes towards the end,
05:41 as Stewart sits down with Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge to talk about a ban
05:46 on gender-affirming care for trans youth.
05:48 "98% without that medical treatment."
05:51 "That's an incredibly made-up figure."
05:56 Stewart has clearly done his homework, as he cuts through Rutledge's claims with
06:01 strong counter-arguments. While there's plenty of misinformation about the trans community,
06:06 we're grateful to have Stewart standing up for truth and compassion.
06:09 Number 15. First interview with Barack Obama. The Daily Show.
06:14 Jon Stewart had interviewed both former presidents and presidential hopefuls in the past,
06:18 but the prospect of interviewing a sitting president always seemed too far away.
06:22 That is, until President Obama agreed to an interview in October of 2010.
06:26 [Applause]
06:28 "Thank you. Thank you. I'm sorry. That's all the time we have."
06:36 Obama had appeared on the show before, but the stakes were very clearly different this time
06:41 around. Stewart held the president's feet to the fire, contrasting the campaign of hope he ran on
06:46 with the results of his first two years in Washington.
06:49 "How did we go in two years from hope and change,
06:54 'We are the people we've been looking for,' to 'You're not gonna give them the keys, are you?'"
07:00 The interview showed how much Stewart's position in the media landscape had shifted since he started,
07:04 and that he was able to stand toe-to-toe with the most powerful man in the world.
07:09 "We have done things that some folks don't even know about."
07:12 "What have you done that we don't know about?"
07:14 [Laughter]
07:17 Number 14. Trump Pizza Rant - The Daily Show
07:20 When former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin came to the Big Apple to meet with future
07:24 President of the United States Donald Trump, Stewart was initially pleased at their choice
07:28 of meal - New York pizza. "You know what? Huh, slice of pizza. Respect."
07:35 He became skeptical, though, when the Donald took her to a run-of-the-mill pizza place.
07:40 Strike two came when it was revealed that Trump stacks his slices on top of each other.
07:45 "Son of a bitch! Mother- And you stack your slices, Donald?"
07:51 The final blow came when true New Yorker Donald Trump was filmed eating his pizza with a fork.
07:56 "Are you eating it with a fork? A f***ing fork? Ahh!"
08:01 This led to a rant for the ages from John, validating the sacred item that is New York
08:06 pizza, and even questioning Trump's claim of being a true New Yorker.
08:10 "Donald Trump, why don't you just take that fork and stick it right in New York's eye?"
08:14 [Laughter]
08:17 Number 13. Conservative Libertarian - aka Burning Glenn Beck - The Daily Show
08:23 Republican pundit Glenn Beck moved to Fox News from HLN in 2009, and his visibility skyrocketed
08:29 despite some questionable views and actions. Stewart, meanwhile, found the animated conservative
08:34 a target ripe for parody. "I don't want to be a slave prisoner, but it's your ideology.
08:38 I guess libertarian somehow mitigates. Well, let's look at that. Lie! Lie!"
08:43 Through a series of segments over the course of Beck's run on Fox News, Stewart performed a pitch
08:48 perfect impression of Beck's crazy mannerisms and outlandish theories. "Why did they spell it
08:53 without the 'why'?" "They took out the 'why' because they don't want you asking that question."
09:01 The impression reached its peak with Conservative Libertarian, where John attempted to connect
09:07 progressivism to everything from Nazism to Bert from Sesame Street using printed pictures and
09:12 blackboards. Despite the massive praise the segments received, John never did performance
09:17 art of this scale on the show again, proving Beck was truly a one-of-a-kind figure, for better or
09:23 worse. "Tell me word on the board, who is doing the lying? Aryans! Aryans! Holy s***!"
09:32 Number 12. You Don't Own This Country - The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
09:37 After a crazy week involving the resignation of Roger Ailes from Fox News and the Republican
09:41 National Convention, Stephen Colbert wished for someone to share his emotions with. Luckily,
09:46 John Stewart emerged from under Colbert's desk and asked to get something off his chest.
09:49 "Lack of pleasure with."
09:50 From there, he embarked on an epic rant railing against the Republican Party,
09:57 Fox News, and Donald Trump for the mess that took place in Cleveland that week.
10:01 It concluded with an emotionally charged tirade that told the right that they don't
10:06 and never have owned America. "This country isn't yours. You don't own it. It never was.
10:12 There is no real America. You don't own it." It was a brief but fantastic return to what made
10:18 John famous, and he thankfully made subsequent appearances on The Late Show once the Trump
10:23 administration began. "He's lying on purpose. You know how I know how? How? Because he constantly
10:29 says the phrase, 'Believe me.'" Number 11. Owning Jim Cramer, The Daily Show
10:36 Following a week of John bashing CNBC for their failure to warn consumers of the 2008 financial
10:42 crisis, Mad Money host Jim Cramer came on the show after speaking out against John's criticism
10:46 of the network. While the interview started off civil, Stewart ultimately tore into Cramer,
10:51 asking him what he thought the purpose of CNBC should be and even exposing his own hypocrisy by
10:56 playing clips of him from a 2006 interview. "I'm not gonna say
10:59 it on TV. It's on TV now." These clips were responsible for inducting the phrase "Roll 212"
11:08 into The Daily Show lexicon, basically as code for "Your career is over." "I mean, if I may,
11:13 just roll 212. Roll 212." "No, not 212." Stewart was praised for his passion and integrity during
11:22 the interview, even though it didn't really affect Cramer. "I can't reconcile the brilliance
11:28 and knowledge that you have of the intricacies of the market with the crazy bullshit I see you do
11:34 every night." "Fair enough." Number 10. Discussing gun laws. The problem with John Stewart
11:42 An issue as contentious as gun policy in America inspires some very heated opinions,
11:48 so it makes total sense for Stewart to cover it. "By the way, just for clarity's sake,
11:52 I'm not against the Second Amendment. I'm not against-- I don't want to ban guns,
11:55 but you're saying more guns makes us more safe?" "Yes." Speaking with Oklahoma state senator and
12:01 gun proponent Nathan Domb, Stewart delves into this fierce debate. Addressing the rise in gun-related
12:07 deaths, he points out that the argument that wider availability of guns leads to increased safety
12:12 doesn't hold water. "When the police go to a domestic call, it's the most dangerous call
12:15 they can go on. In your world, if they knew that there were firearms in the house, that's a safer
12:22 call. Is that what you're saying?" Without demonizing responsible gun owners, Stewart shrewdly
12:28 argues for sensible regulations and how they would help protect people. He may not have changed
12:33 Domb's mind, but he sure gave him a lot to think about. "That's what it is. It's firearms. More
12:40 than cancer, more than car accidents." Number 9. Daily Show return. The Daily Show. When it was
12:46 announced that Stewart would be temporarily returning to host The Daily Show every Monday,
12:51 the excitement was palpable. But with this anticipation came some questions.
12:56 Namely, had he lost his touch at all? "Now, where was I? Um." Such fears were quickly assuaged as
13:04 Stewart effortlessly resumed the role he had nearly a decade ago. Talking about the likely
13:08 rematch for the presidency between current President Biden and former President Trump,
13:13 Stewart airs his frustration in the way only he can. "They are the oldest people ever to run for
13:20 president, breaking by only four years the record that they set!" In his first episode back,
13:28 Stewart reminded us exactly why he's inspired such a passionate following. "So the good news is,
13:34 I'm not saying you don't have to worry about who wins the election. I'm saying you have to worry
13:39 about every day before it and every day after. Forever." Number 8. Rally to restore sanity and/or
13:48 fear. Though Stewart's brand of political comedy is full of takedowns against influential figures,
13:53 he cares more about meaningful change in discourse than scoring points over anyone.
13:58 "Sanity will always be and has always been in the eye of the beholder."
14:03 This was underlined by the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, a rally hosted by Stewart
14:08 and Stephen Colbert's conservative alter ego. "Oh, I think I have something in my pocket.
14:12 It's your mojo. I took it." Designed to push back against inflammatory rhetoric,
14:18 this rally drew massive coverage and a massive crowd to Washington, D.C.'s National Mall,
14:23 with an estimated crowd size of 215,000 people. Plenty of other stars appeared at the rally,
14:30 but it was still Stewart who shined brightest of all. "To see you here today and the kind of people
14:36 that you are has restored mine." Number 7. Owning Bill O'Reilly. The O'Reilly Factor.
14:43 Despite Fox News being one of the main targets of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly
14:48 always managed to maintain a civil if competitive relationship. The two appeared on each other's
14:52 shows several times, but the best moments were when Stewart was on O'Reilly's turf.
14:57 "It sounds like what you're saying is, and correct me if I'm wrong, and I don't want to be wrong
15:00 when I'm with you, because you know I got mad love for you. That's a rap phrase." "I got it."
15:05 There, the two debated everything, including Jon's role as a comedian, Obama inviting rapper
15:10 Common to the White House, and the threat of terrorism. With a couple of exceptions of dramatic
15:15 embellishment, the two kept their conversations restrained and respectful. "Guess who wrote a song
15:20 about Leonard Peltier?" "Yeah." "Bono." "Okay." "Guess where he was? The White House. Booyah!"
15:28 Stewart's appearances showed he was more than able to hold his own against O'Reilly,
15:32 even out of his element, and made smart, relevant points in the process.
15:36 "Let me tell you something." "And you do it very well." "That's not the only thing you like about
15:38 me. I'm like a shot of Levittown, right in your ass, like a B-12. Boom!"
15:43 It's only fitting that Stewart was awarded a prize named for one of the most renowned satirists
15:55 ever known. "When I first got the call from the Kennedy Center, I would receive the Twain Prize.
16:02 I said to my wife, 'Don't give them any of our credit card information.'"
16:07 The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is an honor bestowed upon comedians who have made an
16:12 undeniable impact on society. And many, including members of Stewart's Daily Show staff,
16:18 pay touching and humorous tribute to their former boss. "So from the bottom of my heart,
16:23 thank you for everything, John, wherever you are."
16:26 When it was his turn to speak, Stewart was honored and humbled. Speaking from the heart
16:32 about his journey and the people who've inspired him, Stewart shows his wonderfully relatable side.
16:37 "Any of you want to have a transcendent experience, get in the car with your daughter and
16:41 drive down the Jersey Shore and listen to J. Cole's 'She's Mine, Parts 1 and 2.'"
16:47 Best of all, he leaves us feeling inspired about the hope of a better world.
16:52 "That what we have is fragile and precious. And the way to guard against it isn't to change how
17:01 audiences think, it's to change how leaders lead."
17:06 5. Interview with Malala Yousafzai, The Daily Show
17:10 For a guy who meets with everyone from movie stars to world leaders,
17:14 you wouldn't expect John Stewart to be humbled by much. However, he was reduced to childlike
17:19 wonder and amazement when he met with Pakistani activist and Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai.
17:24 "Thank you for being here."
17:26 "Thank you so much. It's an honor for me."
17:28 "It is an honor for us. I know me."
17:31 As Malala relayed her inspirational story to John, he couldn't help but listen with his
17:37 hands up to his face, reduced to speechlessness at the amazing things she said.
17:42 "And I'll tell him, 'That's what I want to tell you. Now do what you want.'"
17:46 Malala remained a source of inspiration for John and The Daily Show, as her one-of-a-kind
17:51 activism brought light after some of the darkest times in recent history.
17:55 "I will say this, I don't know where you come from, but I am very glad you're here."
18:01 4. Daily Show Farewell, The Daily Show
18:05 When John Stewart first announced he would be leaving The Daily Show, it didn't feel real.
18:10 "It is time for someone else to have that opportunity. I'm not sure if I'm
18:13 going to be able to say this, but I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:17 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:20 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:22 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:25 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:27 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:29 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:31 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:33 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:35 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:41 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:43 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:45 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:47 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:49 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:51 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:53 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:55 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:57 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
18:59 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:01 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:03 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:05 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:07 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:09 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:11 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:13 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:15 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:37 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:47 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:49 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:51 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:53 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:55 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:57 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
19:59 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
20:01 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
20:03 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
20:05 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
20:07 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
20:09 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
20:11 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
20:13 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
20:15 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
20:17 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
20:19 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
20:21 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be

21:15 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:17 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:19 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:21 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:23 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:25 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:27 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:29 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:31 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:41 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:43 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:45 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:47 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:49 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:51 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:53 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:55 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
21:57 leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be leaving The Daily Show, and I'm going to be
