ESPN's Jay Williams has doubled down on his belief that Iowa's Caitlin Clark is not in the GOAT conversation because she hasn't won a championship.
Transcript
00:00 Jay Williams says Caitlin Clark can't be the GOAT without championships.
00:03 Robin Lundberg, Dakota London.
00:05 Dakota, to me this is a little bit silly and it almost feels like just a response to people praising Caitlin Clark.
00:11 I say that because I don't remember ever having the GOAT debate in either men's or women's college basketball.
00:17 And when it comes to the women's side specifically,
00:20 there are so many programs that, or there are a few programs that have dominated so many years
00:26 that what she did elevating Iowa I think should count as much as say a championship for UConn.
00:32 Yeah, I thought this was weird.
00:36 You're not talking about the pros.
00:40 Like his point holds true in the NBA in a sense of like,
00:44 like Mellow is a prolific scorer.
00:48 Nobody, there wasn't many times where I thought Mellow was the best player in the league
00:53 because he was just a prolific scorer but there wasn't a championship behind it.
00:58 But in this situation in college, it just doesn't apply.
01:03 Like more than anything else, it's taken away from what she's doing.
01:06 To your point, nobody's having the GOAT debate about collegiate sports.
01:11 It's just not a common conversation.
01:13 They're there max four years with such a small window.
01:17 So it doesn't even really apply.
01:19 So it's like I didn't get the point of it.
01:22 And the fact that he doubled down on it, it seems like you're really going out your way
01:25 to take a shot at her. That's unnecessary.
01:28 And you know, there have been plenty of greats in the sport,
01:31 obviously Tarazi and Sue Bird and Maya Moore and so on and so forth.
01:35 But again, certain programs have dominated.
01:37 She went with Iowa and beat a dominant South Carolina team last year.
01:41 And then if you were to apply this to the men's side, did anyone ever say,
01:45 Steph Curry didn't win a championship at Davidson?
01:49 Right, right, right, right.
01:51 Matter of fact, it's funny because when UConn was in the midst of their run,
01:55 they were winning championships every year.
01:58 I remember the conversation of whoever was on that team being the GOAT player
02:02 when they were winning titles year after year.
02:04 It just seems odd.
02:06 What she's doing is special.
02:08 I think what she's doing is elevating women's basketball both at the collegiate level
02:12 and when she enters the pros, it'll be even kicked up a higher notch.
02:15 So I just feel like giving her flowers and letting her rock.
02:18 Yeah, all you need is eyes, not rings, to know what Kaitlin Clark's about.
