00:00 My name is Hilka Shelman, I'm a journalist and I wrote a book,
00:03 The Algorithm, which looks at AI tools in the world of work and in hiring.
00:07 Turns out most large companies in the United States use AI in their hiring process,
00:12 and I have some tips for you.
00:13 Having your resume stand out with unique designs, colors, and images is a bad idea in the age of AI.
00:26 Simpler is better in the world of AI screeners.
00:29 The goal is to make it easy for a machine to read.
00:31 Be sure to describe your previous experience with short, crisp sentences.
00:35 Quantify your achievements as best as possible.
00:38 One way to ensure your resume makes it past the initial screening
00:47 is to include the exact keywords used in a job description in your resume.
00:51 AI-based resume screeners sometimes reject qualified candidates
00:55 simply because their resume do not include the exact criteria and keywords
00:59 established in the job description.
01:01 There are tools to help you "see" your resume the way an AI screener might.
01:05 Sites like Jobscan and others allow you to input a job description
01:09 and compare your resume to that description to see if your resume matches the role.
01:14 But beware of looking too good on paper.
01:16 Aim for a 60-85% match because AI might filter out resumes that match the job description 100%,
01:23 inferring that they are a copy of the job description.
01:26 Companies are increasingly hiring based on skills and experience
01:31 rather than relying on potentially biased markers
01:34 like whether and where a candidate went to college.
01:36 A skills section on LinkedIn might also be helpful
01:39 since recruiters often search for a specific skill
01:42 and the location of a job when looking for talent.
01:50 While predictive AI screening may work against you,
01:53 it is possible to use AI to your benefit in your job search.
01:57 ChatGPT and other large language models can help polish resumes
02:01 and write compelling cover letters tailored to the job description.
02:05 Of course, if you go this route, edit the ChatGPT draft to make it sound more like you
02:09 and add a touch of personality.
02:11 Another way ChatGPT can help you prepare is by suggesting commonly asked interview questions
02:16 and possible responses.
02:18 Before you nervously face a human recruiter,
02:20 you'll have practice responses to job interview queries like
02:23 "Tell me about a time you failed and how you bounced back."
02:27 Good luck out there, keep your chin up, and don't let the robots get you down.
02:32 [music fades out]
