Three men and a woman have died in a single vehicle crash in northern NSW

00:00 Absolute tragedy here on the NSW Far North Coast.

00:08 We know that a blue Mazda utility was found to have rolled at about a quarter to six this

00:14 morning on Back Channel Road.

00:16 The male driver, two male passengers and a female passenger all died at the scene.

00:21 We really don't know much beyond that because the police are still at the crash site.

00:26 There's been a fairly regular procession of police vehicles heading in there that we've

00:31 witnessed this morning.

00:32 We've been here for a couple of hours.

00:35 It has been suggested to some of the locals that we've spoken to that there may have been

00:40 a party held in this area overnight.

00:43 But at this stage we don't know whether those involved attended that event.

00:48 If it did in fact happen, that's just pure speculation at this stage.

00:52 I can tell you that Back Channel Road, it is the road that links this village of Wardell

00:59 to a place called Cabbage Tree Island.

01:01 Now that's an Indigenous community.

01:04 The 80 or so permanent residents there all had to be evacuated at the height of that

01:09 catastrophic flood that hit this part of the world almost exactly two years ago.

01:15 And this is a community, Cabbage Tree Island and the broader Wardell community, that is

01:19 still suffering the traumatic after effects of that catastrophe.

01:24 And I spoke to Joel Orchard who runs a community recovery hub called Wardell Core a little

01:31 bit earlier this morning.

01:33 Look I think this community lives with a great sense of loss already from the floods and

01:38 still a lot of people having a very hard time recovering.

01:40 There's a lot of impacts of trauma.

01:44 And yeah, this sort of news is terrible for everyone in any circumstance, but certainly

01:48 it will impact this community significantly.

01:50 There's few details available at this stage, but we can safely say this is an absolutely

01:56 tragic event.
