00:00I'm here at Mareeba, west of Cairns, where Premier Stephen Miles has pledged $20 million
00:08to expand the Mareeba Hospital behind me if Labor is re-elected.
00:13That would see the emergency department capacity expanded.
00:16Mr Miles has also announced that the Pharmacy Scope of Pilot program would be made permanent
00:22and expanded if Labor is re-elected.
00:25Now that program allows pharmacists to prescribe and administer things like the contraceptive
00:30pill and treatments for things like UTI.
00:33Today Mr Miles has hailed the success of the program.
00:37This is an initiative I'm really proud of.
00:39It's using our health staff to their full scope of practice and using those fantastic
00:45pharmacy resources in just about every town.
00:49Many of them open seven days a week, many of them open extended hours.
00:54We started off with antibiotics for particularly women suffering from UTIs and repeat prescriptions
01:01for the contraceptive pill.
01:03We've since expanded that trial to include a wide range of preventative health as well
01:12as assessment and treatment pathways.
01:15Now we're here in the electorate of Cook, one of the most vast and diverse seats in
01:20all of Queensland.
01:21It's held by MP Cynthia Louie, a Labor MP who's held it since 2017.
01:28Ms Louie was the first Torres Strait Islander to be elected to any parliament.
