00:04 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most surprising and
00:09 unpredictable moments on Amazon's Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Be warned, there are lots of spoilers
00:14 to follow.
00:15 "You, um, you break the legs and I'll break the arms."
00:21 Number 10. The House Explosion
00:23 "I think they're just easing us in. You know, it's always like this at a stakeout at first."
00:29 The first episode of Mr. and Mrs. Smith is pretty light on the spy stuff and by design.
00:34 As Jane theorizes, HiHi eases them in with a simple mission. Follow a woman, intercept
00:40 her package, and deliver it to an address. When they deliver the package to a large house,
00:45 they see that it's nothing but a simple cake.
00:47 "Oh, well, it is a little damaged. Maybe a 50% discount."
00:53 John and Jane are left so disappointed in the lack of excitement that they leave the
00:56 house in anger, and that's when it blows up behind them.
01:00 "They're probably diplomats and there's an ingredient in the cake that they can't get
01:03 in the States."
01:04 "Yeah, but then why do-"
01:09 The explosion comes as a complete shock, and it instigates a harrowing tonal shift that
01:14 rewards viewers for their patience.
01:17 Number 9. Meeting Other John
01:18 "Hi, Hi. Enjoy your day off."
01:24 The Smiths are given a much-needed day off, so they head to a farmer's market and shop
01:29 the local produce. And that's where their world opens up. John meets a friendly man
01:34 at a juice stand, and he turns out to be another Smith working for the same agency.
01:39 "I'm John."
01:40 "Jane."
01:41 "His last name's Smith. He's one of us."
01:46 Now what in the heck are the odds of that? Is this just an innocent coincidence, however
01:50 unlikely it may be, or is there something more nefarious going on here? These are the
01:55 types of questions that this bizarre meeting raises, and it turns a fun day out into something
02:00 far more tantalizing and mysterious.
02:02 "At the end of the day, yeah, you got some nicks and bruises, but John, it's a fantastic
02:08 life."
02:09 Number 8. The Other Smith's Mission
02:11 "You know what?"
02:12 "Really?"
02:13 "You two should come."
02:16 John and Jane hit it off with Other John, and both he and Other Jane are invited over
02:20 for a friendly dinner. The couples get on really well, and the Other Smiths reveal that
02:24 they work at the, quote, "super high-risk" level of the company.
02:28 "What level are you two? You're high-risk."
02:31 "Yeah, high-risk."
02:32 "How about you?"
02:33 "Super high-risk."
02:34 "Super high-risk."
02:35 "Yeah."
02:36 "Wow."
02:37 Hoping to give the Smiths a taste, the Other Smiths invite them on a mission. The invitation
02:42 alone is surprising enough, but then they put the Smiths on a helicopter and force them
02:47 to do the mission alone. It proves they're most serious yet, and they resort to grisly
02:53 measures in order to get out alive. It's a seriously dark ending to an otherwise light
02:58 episode, and it leaves us questioning the Other Smiths even more than we already were.
03:03 "I really didn't like those two."
03:07 "I hate those two people."
03:09 Number 7. John Still Talks to His Mom
03:12 When they agree to become Smiths, John and Jane are given explicit instructions. Give
03:17 up your past life and cease all contact with family and friends.
03:21 "No contact with anyone."
03:23 "I gave you my mother."
03:27 Jane doesn't have a problem with this, as she has a bad relationship with her father.
03:31 But John finds it a little more difficult. As we learn in the third episode, he is still
03:37 in close contact with his mother and phones her multiple times a day.
03:41 "A few times a day."
03:43 "A few times a day?"
03:45 Jane is none too happy with this, claiming that it's irresponsible, unprofessional,
03:50 and ultimately dangerous for his mother. It's a nice little reveal that humanizes John and
03:55 drives the first of many wedges between him and Jane.
03:58 "There's a reason we don't keep contact, John."
04:00 "I know."
04:01 "This is, this is, this is..."
04:03 "I, I, it's not a, it's not a..."
04:04 "It's dangerous not just for us, it's dangerous for your mom."
04:07 Number 6. Hi-Hi Starts Talking to Jane
04:10 "I'm Hi-Hi."
04:14 And speaking of wedges, Hi-Hi. This is the anonymous figure who gives John and Jane their
04:19 missions. And up until this point, their relationship with the Smiths has been strictly "go here,
04:24 do that." But then Hi-Hi starts talking to Jane on a more personal level. They compliment
04:29 her on her work, ask if she's happy, and tell her that she is in line for a promotion.
04:34 "That's not what I signed up for. I don't want to go down, I want to keep going up.
04:38 I thought we could have higher risk eventually."
04:42 Things get even more substantial at the end of the episode when Hi-Hi asks Jane if she'd
04:47 like to replace her John. It's a startling plot development that promises great things
04:51 for the future of the show, and it further manipulates the Smiths' relationship down
04:55 the tragic path it's destined for.
04:58 "Well done, Jane."
04:59 "It's probably just a typo."
05:07 5. Bev is a rival agent
05:10 "How long have you been seeing my husband?"
05:13 "We're not seeing each other."
05:15 Things are quite dire between the Smiths by episode 7. They're constantly fighting, on
05:20 the verge of a separation, and John is seeing another woman named Bev. When she's confronted
05:25 by Jane, Bev swears that nothing physical has occurred and that John simply enjoys her
05:30 company over Jane's.
05:32 "We watch movies, so that's what you guys do together, you watch movies?"
05:38 "Sometimes. Or we drink and smoke, talk, we just hang out."
05:44 But then we're hit with a pretty serious plot twist. Bev is actually a target of John's,
05:49 and she works for a rival company. Luckily, we learn that the exciting way, as Bev attacks
05:55 the Smiths and, well, completely kicks their butts. It's a fun twist, and it proves the
06:00 show's talent at blending the spy stories with the more grounded relationship drama.
06:04 "Yeah, I did give her a massage and I didn't sleep with her, that's exactly what happened."
06:07 "Yeah, but you kissed her."
06:08 "Yeah, so what?"
06:09 "Oh my God!"
06:11 4. Jane is shot at
06:13 "Oh, I'm sorry, Maxie. I always come crawling back to you, won't I?"
06:20 In the final episode of the show, Jane is given the fateful order to terminate John.
06:25 We all knew it was coming, even though we didn't want it to. But what we didn't see
06:30 coming was Jane herself being targeted. Just as she's feeding her adorable cat Max, various
06:35 shots ring through the window and nearly hit Jane. Unfortunately, there is one casualty,
06:48 but let's not talk about that. This is an extraordinary scene, both hopelessly tragic
06:53 and completely surprising. We are left to infer that the shooter intentionally missed
06:58 Jane, hoping to frame John for the shooting and coerce Jane into attacking her ex-partner.
07:02 "Why did you kill Max?"
07:03 "I didn't kill Max."
07:10 3. What super high-risk means
07:12 "It's a bummer, and we really liked you guys."
07:16 "We did."
07:17 The other Smiths make a not-so-surprising reappearance in the final episode, interrupting
07:22 a sincere conversation between John and Jane. It's here that we finally learn what super
07:26 high-risk entails. The show made it seem like super high-risk was just that - extremely
07:37 dangerous missions with a high chance of mortality. Well, it is that, but it's also so much more.
07:43 The other Smiths not only admit that Hi-Hi set up their initial encounter at the market,
07:48 but they also reveal that super high-risk entails terminating Smiths. It's a great
07:53 reveal, and it sheds further light on the show's very first scene in which Alexander
07:57 Skarsgard and Issa Gonzalez are gunned down by the other Smiths.
08:01 "You'll lay down suppressive fire from the porch, honey. You can draw their attention.
08:06 I can flank it."
08:09 2. Eric Shane dies
08:12 "Step two. Administer single dose of truth serum. Do not exceed single dose."
08:20 Mr. and Mrs. Smith is full of fun guest stars, including John Turturro playing shady billionaire
08:25 Eric Shane. John and Jane are tasked with infiltrating a black tie event and injecting
08:30 Eric with truth serum. They're given explicit instructions to only give him one dose, but
08:35 John and Jane have a miscommunication and accidentally give him two doses.
08:39 "You told me to do it!"
08:42 "No, I told you I was gonna do it."
08:44 This results in Eric's slow demise, and he dies on the Smiths' kitchen floor. His
08:49 death comes as quite the shock. We knew that giving him two doses was not ideal, but we
08:53 didn't think it would lead to his death. Furthermore, this becomes the Smiths' first
08:58 failed mission, and the episode ends with the harrowing cliffhanger that only two fails
09:03 remain. Gulp.
09:04 "Who takes care of a dead body?"
09:09 "We do."

09:27 Number 1. Burning down the therapist's house
09:29 "So, what brings you to therapy?"
09:35 John and Jane go to couples therapy, hoping to heal some major fractures in their relationship.
09:40 It um, does not go well. The Smiths seem to be making some headway in therapy, but then
09:45 they learn that their conversations have been recorded.
09:47 "Before I forget, I want to give you this. What's that? Uh, those are the recordings."
09:53 They are clearly uncomfortable with this revelation, you know, being spies and all. So they decide
09:58 to burn down the therapist's house, hoping to eliminate all evidence of their interactions.
10:03 It's a surprisingly dark turn of events, signaling that the Smiths will resort to some extreme
10:08 measures in order to keep their identities on the down low. We didn't think they had
10:12 it in them, but apparently, they do.
10:14 "Yes, my house is completely on fire. There's smoke billowing out. I don't know. Yes, yes,
10:22 I have so many special things in that house."
