00:00 In Palestine, over 7,200 citizens have been illegally detained by Israel in the occupied
00:11 West Bank since October 7.
00:16 In Argentina, southern governors threaten to stop supplying gas and oil to the rest
00:20 of the country if the Millet administration fails to deliver the regular monthly federal
00:25 tax revenue.
00:29 And in Niger, citizens welcome the lifting of sanctions, trade and travel sanctions by
00:36 the economic community of West African state, ECOWAS.
00:45 Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:47 My name is Belén de los Santos and from the Telstra studios in Havana, Cuba, we begin
00:52 with the news.
01:08 In Palestine, over 7,225 citizens, including 80 women, have been illegally detained by
01:14 Israel in the occupied West Bank since October 7.
01:18 In a statement issued by the Prisoners' Club, they denounced that since October 7, more
01:24 than 2,850 administrative detention orders have been issued by the military, a practice
01:31 they claim is part of the aggression strategy against the Palestinians and the ongoing genocide
01:36 in the Gaza Strip.
01:38 The Palestinian organization condemned the torture and ill-treatment of detainees by
01:42 Israeli forces.
01:44 According to human rights groups, administrative detention violates due judicial process because
01:50 it allows for no evidence to be presented against prisoners while they are detained
01:54 for long periods of time without charges, trial or conviction.
02:02 World Health Organization spokesman Tarek Hazarevic reported that the Israeli siege
02:07 on Gaza has generated unprecedented levels of destruction, stressing that between 70
02:13 and 80 percent of the civilian infrastructure has been destroyed or severely damaged.
02:18 The official estimated that it will take up to 12 years just to clean up the debris and
02:24 war explosives and tens of billions of dollars to reverse the overall economic damage.
02:29 Quoting a UN report, Hazarevic indicated that if the attacks were stopped immediately, it
02:35 would take until 2092 to restore Gaza's gross domestic product levels.
02:40 The aggression against Gaza by the Israeli occupation forces has forced 85 percent of
02:46 the population to be displaced amid severe shortages of food, fresh water and also medical
02:51 supplies.
02:52 "When I go to the market, I can't find anything at all.
03:01 There are no vegetables or legumes.
03:04 Unfortunately, no one is aware of what is happening in the northern Gaza Strip, not
03:09 even the Arab countries.
03:11 We are dying of hunger.
03:13 Half a million people are starving.
03:15 In the next days, many people will die of hunger and not from bombs."
03:22 Sunday marked the 142nd day of war in Gaza, with Israel's continuous shelling, a dark
03:28 humanitarian situation and the killing of yet another Al Jazeera journalist.
03:33 Another eight Palestinians were killed in an attack near a busy market in Rafah this
03:38 Sunday.
03:39 "While people are facing starvation and babies are dying in hospitals because their starving
03:44 mothers do not have breast milk to feed them, that was the case of a two-month-old baby
03:50 who died of malnutrition in the Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
03:54 On its part, Norway's embassy in Palestine shared a social media post mourning the death
03:59 in Gaza of two Palestinian human rights lawyers."
04:07 Also in Gaza City, critical patients in the Al Ali Arabic Hospital are waiting hopelessly
04:13 to be transferred abroad for treatment, and the hospital has been caught in material and
04:19 personal shortages amid Israeli siege in Gaza.
04:23 Israeli attacks to the hospital and its surrounding have left it almost incapable of treating
04:27 patients, while the number of injured Gazan residents coming to the hospital has been
04:32 increasing, especially those with severe symptoms.
04:36 Among the critical patients in urgent need of treatment abroad is 14-year-old Matt, who
04:41 was shot in the jaw by an Israeli sniper in early February when the teenager went to a
04:47 white roundabout in southern eastern Gaza City for supply aid.
04:54 "If there is another explosion or any danger at the hospital, there will be no milk, nor
05:03 there will be machines to treat my child.
05:06 I don't know what to do.
05:08 The doctor told me there is no hospital in Gaza Strip that can treat me.
05:12 I need to be transferred abroad for a bone transplant.
05:16 Otherwise my leg will be amputated."
05:18 Also on Sunday, Mahmoud Abbas, president of the state of Palestine, met in Amman, capital
05:26 of Jordan, with Jordan King Abdullah II and the Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah.
05:31 In the meeting, the Palestinian leader addressed the latest development on the Palestinian
05:36 scene and the ongoing contact with all parties to immediately stop Israeli aggression against
05:41 Palestine and bring humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, especially to the north, which
05:47 is exposed to real famine.
05:49 Abbas reiterated its rejection of the displacement of Palestinian people and warned of the great
05:54 dangers resulting from the occupation army attacks on Rafa City.
05:58 Meanwhile, in Spain, Madrid citizens demonstrated in rejection of the genocide committed by
06:08 Israel against the civilians in Gaza.
06:11 Citizens of Spanish capital met at the Puerta de Atocha train station to reject the sale
06:16 of weapons to the Israeli regime.
06:19 The demonstrators denounced a double standard by the government and asked for specific measures
06:24 to be taken in order to recognize Palestinian people's rights.
06:29 The demonstration took place after a report revealing that Spain was the European country
06:34 to sell the largest amount of weapons to Israel in November.
06:38 All this in spite of the fact that the government had ensured that arms sales to Tel Aviv had
06:44 ended after the beginning of the siege against Gaza.
06:52 In Bogota, Colombia, citizens and organizations staged a cultural event in support of Palestine.
06:57 The Believer's Square was a scene where hundreds of citizens and organizations rallied, united
07:02 for the cause of the Palestinian people.
07:05 With different slogans and chants, the activists demanded an immediate stop to the violence
07:10 against the Arab people.
07:11 The cultural event, called "Together for Palestine", sought to show solidarity with the hardships
07:18 of the Palestinians and to reject the genocide being inflicted by Israel.
07:25 Now, let's take a short break.

07:36 Other stories coming up.
07:37 Stay with us.
07:37 Welcome back to From the South.
07:59 In Argentina, Patagonia region governors threatened to stop supplying gas and oil to the rest
08:04 of the country if the Mele administration fails to deliver the regular monthly federal
08:09 tax revenue.
08:10 On Saturday, the governors of the six provinces of the Patagonia region met by videoconference
08:16 and once again supported the claim of the Chubut province governor, Ignacio Torres.
08:21 Reportedly, on Monday, Torres could be filing a lawsuit against the country's administration
08:26 over the allotted federal tax revenue.
08:29 Moreover, all six governors supported Torres' decision to turn off gas and oil tabs for
08:34 the rest of the country as of next Wednesday.
08:38 And they are also considering introducing legal motion in Congress should the administration
08:42 fail to deliver.
08:47 The foreign minister of Venezuela received his Turkey counterpart in order to strengthen
08:52 bilateral relations and cooperation between both countries.
08:56 During the meeting, the diplomats discussed issues such as the upcoming state visit to
09:00 Venezuela of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
09:04 They also announced that Turkey will host the meeting for the fourth joint commission
09:09 to be held during the month of May.
09:12 Areas such as mining, petrochemicals and tourism are among the areas of cooperation between
09:18 both nations.
09:28 We have seen trade cooperation between Turkey and Venezuela grow.
09:32 The exchange, the import and export of products between the two countries, is becoming more
09:37 and more important.
09:39 Venezuela has become an important supplier of petrochemicals for Turkey.
09:44 Just a week ago, we had the visit of the Turkish energy and natural resources minister.
09:48 And together, we are planning to develop the entire Venezuelan energy sector.
09:55 For his part, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said both countries entertain good relations,
10:01 especially in the areas of trade, mining and energy.
10:07 We are moving forward in our need and will to advance bilateral relations between Turkey
10:12 and Venezuela.
10:13 As you know, relations between Turkey and Venezuela are improving more and more, especially
10:20 economic relations in trade, mining, energy, agriculture and tourism.
10:26 We have a great potential.
10:29 In other news, in Mexico, at least 10 people were killed in a car accident on a highway
10:34 in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi.
10:37 The state's Attorney General's office said that the accident happened early on Saturday
10:42 morning at kilometer 17 in the community of El Salitre in the Rio Verde municipality.
10:48 According to official reports, five women, one man and four minors died in the accident.
10:54 The prosecutor's office also said the bodies were removed and transferred to the coroner's
10:58 office.
11:17 We move on to other topics.
11:19 In Nicaragua, on Saturday, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook the northwestern area of
11:24 the country, luckily without causing any damage or fatalities.
11:29 According to the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies, the quake occurred around 4 o'clock
11:34 in the afternoon local time, with its epicenter 23 kilometers southwest of the Corinto municipality
11:40 in the northwest of the country, at a depth of 34 kilometers.
11:45 The agency said it resulted from the clash between the Cocos and Caribbean tectonic plates.
11:51 Even though there were no victims nor material damages, Vice President Rosario Murillo urged
11:56 people to put into practice multi-threat readiness drills designed in the industry for this kind
12:02 of events.
12:08 In Ecuador, 86,000 people have been affected by heavy rains, floods and landslides in more
12:14 than five provinces of the country.
12:16 The National Risk Management Office said that so far six people are reported dead, seven
12:21 injured and 542 people have either lost their homes or have had to evacuate, and other 19,000
12:28 houses have suffered structural damage.
12:32 Authorities say that although rains are usual this time of year, El Nino weather pattern
12:37 causes an anomalous increase in the seawater temperatures, and they also warn that there's
12:42 a lot more rain coming for the remaining of February and throughout the next month of
12:47 March.
12:52 The government of China renewed a cold wave alert in different regions of the country
12:56 where temperatures are expected to set records for this period.
13:01 According to the National Meteorological Center, the minimum daily temperatures in some regions
13:05 will be 5 to 7 degrees Celsius lower than normal average.
13:10 Authorities urged the concerned departments to do a good preventive job and adopt measures
13:15 to protect livestock, poultry, tropical and subtropical foods, as well as aquatic products
13:20 and crops in order to reduce losses due to disasters.
13:24 They also called on citizens to avoid outdoor activities and urged them to take special
13:29 care against the presence of ice on roads in order to prevent accidents on roadways.

13:57 Welcome back to From the South.
14:19 The economic community of West African states, ECOWAS, lifted the economic trade and travel
14:25 sanctions imposed on Niger with the aim of reversing the coup d'état staged in that
14:29 country.
14:30 The decision was released by the regional group's chairman, Omar Aliye, today, after
14:35 the bloc's meeting in Abuja, capital of Nigeria, aimed at addressing the existential
14:41 threats facing the region, as well as urging three joint-led nations that have left the
14:47 bloc to rescind their decision.
14:49 Ture specified that the measure is of immediate effect and due to humanitarian reasons, to
14:54 mitigate the suffering that was caused as a result of the sanctions.
14:58 However, he explained that there are individual selective sanctions as well as political sanctions
15:04 that remain in place.
15:12 Everyone is very pleased with the lifting of the embargo.
15:15 For us, it's like a celebration.
15:17 Everything will return to normal.
15:19 Supplies will come in.
15:20 Poor and the rich will be able to eat.
15:23 We can assist the most vulnerable.
15:25 The month of Ramadan is approaching, mid-March.
15:29 And if product prices drop, everyone should be able to feed their family.
15:33 Therefore, the lifting of the embargo is excellent news.
15:37 And we thank Allah.
15:40 In Namibia, several African leaders have attended the state funeral of former Prime Minister
15:44 Hei Gengob.
15:46 The ceremony was held at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek.
15:50 Gengob succumbed to cancer this past February 4th, 2024, at the age of 82.
15:55 Born in 1941, Gengob was a prominent politician since before Namibia achieved independence
16:02 from a white minority-ruled South Africa in 1990.
16:06 He chaired the body that drafted Namibia's constitution and then became Namibia's first
16:11 Prime Minister when the independence was declared on March 21st of the same year, and he remained
16:17 Prime Minister until 2002.
16:25 In Belarus, on Sunday, over 75% of the people took part in parliamentary elections.
16:33 Over 5,000 polling stations were set up to elect deputies to the lower house of parliament
16:38 and local councils.
16:40 These elections are being held in keeping with the latest constitution passed in February
16:46 2022, which states that members of the parliament and local councils will be elected for five-year
16:53 terms.
16:54 Over 6 million citizens in Belarus are eligible to vote, including 95,000 Russian residents.
17:01 The Central Electoral Commission reported a turnout of more than 65% in several provinces.
17:07 They also noted the participation of over 45,000 local observers and 294 international
17:15 observers.
17:37 incumbent Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko had this to say about the hopes of the opposition
17:43 in these parliamentary elections.
17:45 There is one goal.
17:48 They need to turn Belarus in the opposite direction, and in order to do so, it is necessary
17:54 to overthrow the current government.
17:56 This will be very difficult, I'm sure, especially after this single voting day in our elections,
18:02 because we will elect absolutely reliable, intelligent people who understand the tasks
18:08 facing our people.
18:10 Therefore, none of their options, even the most radical ones, will work in Belarus.
18:18 On Saturday, medical doctors in South Korea staged yet another protest against the government's
18:23 plan to admit another 2,000 entries to medical colleges.
18:28 The government says it aims to add up to 10,000 doctors by the year 2035 to address what it
18:34 calls a shortage of doctors exacerbated by the country's fast-aging population.
18:39 South Korea's doctor-to-patient ratio is among the lowest in the developed world, particularly
18:44 in essential but low-paying professions like pediatrics, emergency departments, and in
18:50 rural areas.
18:51 Many doctors say the measure will only hurt the quality of medical care and education
18:56 in South Korea.
19:02 At this point, our goal is to make the government realize that this is a wrong policy and we
19:08 urge them to start the dialogue from scratch.
19:12 I think it is the collective goal of 140,000 doctors.
19:17 I believe that myself, the emergency committee, and all 140,000 doctors will voluntarily work
19:25 together until the goal is achieved.
19:30 And on Saturday, in China, the highly anticipated 2024 Lantern Festival Gala entertained the
19:36 audience with a captivating blend of traditional Chinese culture and cutting-edge technical
19:41 innovations.
19:42 This year's gala showcased a diverse array of performances encompassing music, dance,
19:47 comedy, opera, and acrobatics, inviting a global audience to immerse in the enchantment
19:53 of sparking lanterns, engage in the tradition of guessing lantern riddles, and participate
19:58 in the celebrations.
19:59 The gala ended in songs paying tribute to the dragon culture in China and the unity
20:04 of the people across the country.
20:07 This festival takes place on the 15th day of the first lunar month, marking the end
20:12 of the New Year celebration.
