00:00 So Brock Purdy isn't eligible for an extension this year.
00:04 He'll be eligible next year.
00:05 At this point in his career, 27 starts in, two NFC championship appearances and a Super Bowl
00:10 appearances.
00:11 Has he shown enough right now to be the Niners franchise quarterback to get that extension next
00:17 year?
00:18 Or does he have more to prove?
00:19 That's a good topic.
00:22 I mean, to me, here's how it is.
00:24 Has Brock Purdy shown enough for me to be in the franchise quarterback realm?
00:29 To me, that's the top 12, 13 quarterbacks in the NFL.
00:32 Yes, I initially had him around 10.
00:35 I think he's around 10 to 12 for me, somewhere around there right now.
00:39 But the point is, the goal is to win when you have a franchise quarterback.
00:43 You're looking to get one.
00:45 The unfortunate issue is it's so hard to find a franchise quarterback that once you find a guy
00:50 who you believe can resemble that, you're essentially committed to it.
00:53 That's why a lot of coaches get fired when it doesn't work out.
00:56 And that's why a lot of these players get extended or see big money deals, even though teams,
01:01 you know, Dak Prescott, for example, even though there's scrutiny outside of it,
01:06 what other choices the franchise have?
01:08 And I think the 49ers will be in a similar realm.
01:10 One, they've struggled to develop the position.
01:13 They had to get a guy who really came out of college pretty developed.
01:18 And then obviously Brock Purdy has grown significantly since his collegiate days as well.
01:22 But two, I mean, every other move that they've made at the quarterback position
01:27 has not worked out.
01:28 I mean, if you're talking about moves that they've made or even moves that they haven't made.
01:32 So for me, has Brock Purdy shown enough?
01:36 I think he's proven to be in the franchise realm.
01:38 I don't know if he's in the elite realm, which is where you're really comfortable
01:42 to pay quarterbacks, that top, what, five to seven quarterbacks in the NFL kind of realm.
01:46 But to me, I don't know if the 49ers have a choice.
01:49 I think ultimately when it comes down to it,
01:51 they're going to have to dish out that contract.
01:53 And the quarterback price continues to increase and increase maybe $50 million.
01:57 I mean, I think the biggest thing you said, Grant, was franchise quarterback, right?
02:03 When you say franchise quarterback, it's someone you're willing to pay the 40 million,
02:08 the $50 million to be your guy.
02:11 Now, when your roster becomes depleted with talent, obviously when you lose guys,
02:16 you're obviously going to lose George Kittle.
02:17 You're going to lose guys like Brandon, Iuke, Debo, Samuel.
02:21 Eventually, can he be that guy to carry them?
02:22 I don't think he can.
02:24 I said from the beginning, I don't think the Niners going to Super Bowl with Brock Purdy.
02:27 I think he's a very capable quarterback.
02:29 Now, the issue is, is you can't consistently throw with anticipation.
02:33 Sometimes you got to put the ball on your receiver,
02:35 especially in tighter windows and man coverage.
02:38 If you look at what the Chiefs, the Ravens did, they went man coverage.
02:41 They try to force him to beat him with his arm talent.
02:44 And you're going to have teams do that.
02:46 The Browns did it as well.
02:47 It's a good point.
02:48 The more you have-
02:48 Anticipation is his own thing, right?
02:50 When it's man, you're picking out a matchup and you're trying to fit it in a little spot.
02:53 Exactly.
02:54 And that's an issue because when the anticipation is there, he looks phenomenal, right?
02:58 He looks great.
03:00 But then it also leads to interceptions.
03:03 When you throw with anticipation, but that means you and your receiver better 100% be
03:06 on the same page.
03:08 And that's why we saw a lot of interceptions where it was just like terrible throws because
03:12 he's thrown with anticipation.
03:14 So for me, I don't think he is.
03:16 And I think he could show it this next year.
03:18 Obviously, we just saw one year.
03:20 So I'm not saying he can't show it.
03:22 He's definitely going to be in a situation where he's already built a great resume for
03:28 being the seventh-run quarterback the Niners drafted, took him to the Super Bowl, NFC
03:35 Championship, played great in the second half.
03:37 So he's built a solid resume so far.
03:40 But let's see what next year is when teams start going more man against him.
03:42 How can he respond to that?
03:44 So I think it's definitely a can he build off of the strong year he had versus me saying
03:50 right now, I don't think he is right now.
03:52 I agree.
03:53 I think he has more to prove.
03:54 Think he was so great this season, bounce back after that three-game skid.
04:01 But then he was just awful on Christmas night, and it felt like he never really fully bounced
04:06 back after that game.
04:07 And in the playoffs, that wasn't Brock Purdy.
04:10 That wasn't the Brock Purdy.
04:10 I know.
04:11 I mean, he wasn't bad in the playoffs.
04:13 He battled.
04:13 He was tough in the Super Bowl, but that's not the MVP candidate Brock Purdy.
04:18 His quarterback rating was like 80 something, 88, 89.
04:22 That's not Brock Purdy.
04:23 And I want to know what happened.
04:24 You weren't going against great defenses.
04:28 You were in the Super Bowl, but in the other two games, you weren't.
04:31 The rain was a problem.
04:32 As Marco pointed out earlier, that's going to be an issue in the playoffs, most likely
04:35 every year, some weather.
04:37 So yeah, are you going to come back down to earth like Jalen Hurts did this year?
04:42 Have people figured you out?
04:43 Do you have an aversion to precipitation?
04:49 All these things we need to find out before we give you 55 to 60 million dollars a year
04:53 could be a big mistake.
04:55 I don't think he's necessarily locked up the bag yet.
04:58 I don't think yes, you may get it.
05:01 That's also saying that's also not saying like he can't prove it right.
05:06 Like we've only saw one year.
05:08 So I know when I say that we're going to be like, oh, this dude just a hater.
05:11 Well, yeah, I'm seeing one year of it, but there's also through the world.
05:15 I'm betting against them.
05:16 You're just saying wait to see.
05:17 But it's also what we've seen in the one year.
05:19 There's concerns.
05:20 And if you're not looking at those concerns, we saw those concerns with Jimmy, too.
05:24 And we closed our eyes and said, hopefully he fixes them.
05:26 And he sure as hell didn't.
05:28 Right.
05:29 So we can't close our eyes to Brock and say, hopefully he fixes what's concerning on the
05:34 tape because it's there.
05:35 So it's and he's I know he's his talent isn't the greatest.
05:39 And he plays with IQ and anticipation.
05:41 So I'm definitely looking forward to seeing if he could do that, because he definitely
05:45 has proven a lot of people wrong to this point.
05:47 Yeah, and it's like the Niners have built their team in such a way where they don't
05:52 really spend on quarterback.
05:53 It's the whole structure of the team is to spend everywhere else.
05:57 So is Brock pretty so good that they're going to lift that structure and all of a sudden
06:03 pour money into the quarterback position or do they want to keep things the way they are
06:08 and feel like, you know what, we're just going to get someone else to play for $900,000 a
06:11 year.
06:12 Thank you very much, Brock.
06:12 Pretty.
06:13 These are things he needs to prove next year that you're really worth $60 million.
06:17 Yeah.
