00:00 The farmers are struggling with the lack of water in some parts of Northern Luzon.
00:04 So to help them, the Department of Agriculture is now studying how to cloud seeding.
00:09 Some local governments are also working together in Metro Manila to fight the flood of El Niño.
00:15 This is the joint effort of Sandra Aguinaldo and Mackie Pulido.
00:23 Because there is no rain and lack of water, the fruits of the corn are smaller in some farms outside the city of Ilocos Norte.
00:30 So instead of being more dry and not being able to be harvested, the farmers are just starting to harvest.
00:36 We have a lot of corn.
00:38 When we planted it, the fruits grew.
00:43 When we planted it, the fruits grew.
00:49 It grew 15 times.
00:51 To help the farmers, the DA is planning to conduct cloud seeding operations in Region 2.
00:57 This is a mitigating measure where the airplane will fly for 2 kilometers to pour salt on the clouds to make it rain.
01:05 Salt is hygroscopic in nature.
01:08 When we say hygroscopic, it has the ability to attract moisture.
01:14 If we dispense salt from above, when it reaches the top, it will attract moisture.
01:21 But before pouring salt, the Doppler radar uses the hope to know if the cloud is seedable or if the cloud has moisture.
01:29 The wind direction will also study to estimate where the rain will fall.
01:35 There are dry clouds.
01:37 So even if you pour a few kilos of salt, if the clouds are dry, it will not fall.
01:44 But there are clouds that are rich in moisture content.
01:48 The cost is 80 to 100 thousand pesos per day for cloud seeding operations.
01:53 It's expensive, but the benefit is greater when it rains on the drying of the land.
01:59 Here in Metro Manila, Metro Manila Mayors are also working against El Niño.
02:06 Metro Manila Council President and San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora
02:11 will support the establishment of a water catchment facility for all cities in Metro Manila.
02:17 I will again reiterate my call to my fellow mayors to set up rainwater catchment systems.
02:24 The important thing is the rainwater.
02:26 Let's not let it just flow through the canals and drainages.
02:30 Let's flood it, pump it, and reuse it.
02:34 Metro Manila Development Authority, MMDA, is giving away a rainwater collector,
02:41 which they donated to Tripa de Galina Park in Barangay San Isidro in Makati City.
02:47 They plan to put it in barangays and schools.
02:51 For GMA Integrated News, Sandra Aguinaldo.
02:55 Maki Polido na Katuto, 24 hours.
