00:00 "I'll be back."
00:01 [Laughter]
00:03 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for those lines of dialogue
00:08 that instantly evoke the film they come from.
00:10 "We're going to need a bigger boat."
00:12 Beware of spoilers ahead.
00:14 Number 30. Houston, we have a problem.
00:17 Apollo 13.
00:19 NASA buffs will recognize that neither Jack Swigert nor Jim Lovell said Houston, we have a problem,
00:24 and instead contacted Mission Control to say Houston, we've had a problem.
00:28 But regardless of the minor misquote, movie lovers everywhere know that when they hear
00:32 the former line, we're talking about 1995 space docudrama Apollo 13.
00:38 The flick was based on the true story of the 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission,
00:42 which never landed on the moon due to the aforementioned problem.
00:45 It stars Tom Hanks as Commander Jim Lovell,
00:48 who spoke the line that's now become a pop culture staple.
00:51 "This is Houston, uh, say again please?"
00:54 "Houston, we have a problem."
00:55 Number 29. I feel the need.
00:58 The need for speed.
00:59 Top Gun.
01:00 In the mid-90s, gamer kids might have said,
01:03 "I feel the need, the need for speed" in reference to a desire to play their favorite racing game.
01:07 However, roughly a decade earlier,
01:09 that statement had been made famous by none other than Maverick himself, Tom Cruise.
01:14 "I feel the need, the need for speed."
01:18 Ow!
01:19 It's hard to hear the words without instantly picturing the scene they originated in,
01:24 which tells you everything you need to know about its impact.
01:27 Now that the 2022 sequel has brought the franchise to the front of our minds once more,
01:31 we're sure a whole new generation of moviegoers will be expressing their need for speed.
01:35 Number 28. This is Sparta.
01:39 300.
01:40 The line, followed by the slow-mo kick, is undeniably 300.
01:44 "This is Sparta!"
01:46 But had things gone a bit differently,
01:52 "This is Sparta" might not be as instantly recognizable and synonymous with its film as it is.
01:57 As Gerard Butler explained to GQ magazine,
02:00 he'd done many takes, usually reciting the line in a more subdued way.
02:04 But then he asked director Zack Snyder if he could try it one more time,
02:07 at which point he gave the reading we know and love.
02:10 Sure, it was over the top.
02:11 He knew it and those on set seemingly knew it.
02:13 But as Snyder said,
02:15 "It was awesome."
02:16 We have to say we agree.
02:18 Number 27. If you build it, he will come.
02:22 Field of Dreams.
02:23 There are a lot of movies where people build things,
02:26 but only one we can think of where that thing is a baseball field in a cornfield.
02:31 Why does Kevin Costner's character Ray Kinsella build said baseball field, you ask?
02:35 Because a disembodied voice tells him,
02:37 "If you build it, he will come."
02:40 Is the he shoeless Joe Jackson or Kinsella's deceased father?
02:45 That is for the viewer to decide and experience.
02:48 But for cinephiles and baseball lovers everywhere,
02:51 the words, "If you build it, he will come," will always evoke Field of Dreams.
02:55 While we're on the subject of baseball movies,
03:03 let's not forget about a League of Their Own's iconic line.
03:05 Number 26. Nobody puts Baby in a corner.
03:12 Dirty Dancing.
03:13 Everyone remembers that final dance number in Dirty Dancing,
03:16 where Johnny and Baby wow the Kellerman's crowd with his kind of dancing.
03:20 But prior to hitting the stage,
03:22 Patrick Swayze's Johnny Castle grabs Baby from her table
03:25 after uttering a now iconic statement at her dad.
03:28 Years later, Swayze reportedly admitted that he initially, quote, "hated" the line,
03:34 finding it, quote, "corny" and hesitant to speak the scripted words.
03:38 However, the final product changed his mind, as he saw how effective it is.
03:49 Indeed, it works so well that hearing it immediately brings the movie to mind
03:53 and gets us ready to bust out our dancing shoes.
03:56 Number 25. Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'.
04:00 The Shawshank Redemption.
04:01 Given its popularity today, you might be surprised to learn that
04:04 The Shawshank Redemption didn't do well at the box office back in 1994.
04:08 But instead of just going away and dying,
04:10 the film built on its critical accolades and popularity among viewers,
04:14 eventually becoming a beloved classic.
04:17 Many images are synonymous with it today,
04:19 but there's one piece of dialogue in particular
04:22 that always instantly transports us into the world of the film.
04:25 First spoken by Tim Robbins' Andy Dufresne to Morgan Freeman's Red,
04:33 it encompasses the story's theme of strength
04:35 in the face of apparent hopelessness to gorgeous effect.
04:38 It's no wonder it's had such a lasting impact.
04:41 Number 24. Are you not entertained? Gladiator.
04:45 After being told that being a gladiator in the arena is also being an entertainer,
04:50 Maximus heads out onto the battlefield
04:52 and quite easily defeats all the foes put in front of him.
04:55 When the crowd's reaction is initially less than enthusiastic,
04:58 he angrily asks them one of the most famous questions cinema has ever heard.
05:02 Now, we know movie history is littered with stories about showmen,
05:07 but some find a way to stand out from the crowd.
05:10 Indeed, when we hear those four words,
05:12 or see them written in any number of online memes,
05:15 we know they're from Gladiator.
05:17 Number 23. It was Beauty killed the Beast. King Kong.
05:21 There are actually two right answers for this one,
05:24 and no, neither of them is Beauty and the Beast.
05:26 Although the quote does line up with the aforementioned Disney film,
05:29 we know Beauty actually saved the Beast there.
05:32 Rather, this famous quote is referring to another beast entirely,
05:36 the one known as, say it with us, King Kong.
05:42 In fact, it's so iconically associated with the creature
05:45 that it's been used as the final line of dialogue
05:47 in both its eponymous 1933 movie,
05:50 as well as Peter Jackson's 2005 retelling of the tale.
05:53 Much of 2001 A Space Odyssey happens in silence,
06:04 with director Stanley Kubrick even reportedly calling it a quote,
06:08 "non-verbal experience."
06:10 Though there are few words spoken throughout the two-plus-hour-long runtime,
06:14 there are a number of them that have become immediately recognizable.
06:18 Of course, we're thinking of six in particular.
06:20 They not only mark a pivotal point in the story,
06:25 they also continue to resonate today,
06:27 as the use of AI continues to increase.
06:30 Let's just hope that Alexa or Siri never respond
06:33 to one of our legitimate demands the way Hal terrifyingly does in this scene.
06:38 "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."
06:40 Both "You Had Me" at "Hello" and "Show Me the Money"
06:51 instantly bring Jerry Maguire to the tip of everyone's tongue.
06:53 However, we tend to agree with the American Film Institute,
06:57 who placed the latter at number 25 on their "100 Years, 100 Movie Quotes" list,
07:02 with the former coming in slightly lower at number 52.
07:05 "Show me the money."
07:06 Maybe it's the backing music, the Cuba Gooding Jr. dance,
07:19 the screaming Tom Cruise, the way it's repeated, or a mix of it all.
07:24 But for some reason, whenever we hear this line,
07:26 we just want to show ourselves Jerry Maguire again for the umpteenth time.
07:30 "Show me the money!"
07:32 "Show me the money!"
07:34 "You wanna know how I got these scars?"
07:42 "My father was a drinker and a fiend."
07:51 In the midst of his Gotham crime spree,
07:53 the Joker terrified his rivals simply by explaining where his scars came from.
07:57 In his first version of the story, he claims his face was carved up by his own father,
08:02 as part of a psychotic attempt to turn his frown upside down.
08:05 "Why so serious?"
08:07 "He comes at me with the knife."
08:10 "Why so serious?"
08:13 "He sticks the blade in my mouth."
08:17 "Let's put a smile on that face."
08:22 The twisted humor of his dad's words are perfectly on-brand for Joker,
08:26 becoming more chilling the more he repeats it.
08:29 Thanks to Heath Ledger's performance,
08:31 "Why so serious?" elicited all the crazed violence of the Dark Knight.
08:35 "Why so serious?"
08:36 Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar's country romance was full of hardship.
08:48 With family lives and homophobic attitudes straining their relationship,
08:51 Jack finally explodes at Ennis for keeping him at arm's length.
08:56 Despite all his anger,
08:57 Jack offers up this tortured poetic line when he admits that he can't get over his feelings for Ennis.
09:02 "I wish I knew how to quit you."
09:04 His gruff words capture the rancher personas that most people remember about Brokeback Mountain,
09:09 and perfectly express the frustration and agony of the moment.
09:12 "It's alright."
09:13 "Damn you, Ennis."
09:16 "I just can't stand this anymore, Jack."
09:20 "You talking to me?"
09:26 "You talking to me?"
09:26 New York can be a lonely city,
09:32 and Travis Bickle is not only alone,
09:34 he also has to witness the crime and indecency of the city streets at night as he works as a taxi driver.
09:40 His frustration leads him to buy a gun,
09:42 as he prepares to take the law into his own hands.
09:46 To practice, Bickle holds arguments in his mirror and practices drawing his weapon,
09:50 resulting in a macho back and forth with himself.
09:53 "Then who the hell else are you talking to? Talking to me?"
09:56 The chat is frightening and unhinged,
09:59 two of the things that Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro do best.
10:02 "You're dead."
10:04 Number 17.
10:05 Life is like a box of chocolates.
10:07 Forrest Gump
10:08 "Hello."
10:09 "My name's Forrest. Forrest Gump."
10:12 "Do you want a chocolate?"
10:20 Forrest Gump's mama teaches him a lot about life,
10:22 and he preaches her words like proverbs.
10:25 So when Forrest tries to offer a chocolate to a stranger,
10:28 he also drops in this amazing analogy.
10:30 "My mama always said, 'Life was like a box of chocolates.
10:35 You never know what you're gonna get.'"
10:40 The line sums up the events of the movie,
10:42 which is all about Forrest's different life experiences,
10:44 and he reflects his interesting perspective on the uncertainties of life.
10:48 While the film is full of wise lines and quotes from Forrest's mama,
10:52 this particular nugget stands out by reflecting its central character's optimism and insight.
10:57 "That's all I have to say about that."
11:00 Number 16.
11:01 I dare you. I double dare you.
11:03 Pulp Fiction
11:04 "What country you from?"
11:06 "What? What?"
11:06 "What ain't no country I ever heard of. They speak English in what?"
11:09 Tarantino's 1994 crime film is full of iconic moments and recognizable quotes.
11:15 And great vengeance and furious anger was definitely on our radar,
11:18 but we had to give this spot to Jules' other line when he's shaking down Brett for double-crossing their boss.
11:23 The panicked Brett just can't stop saying "what" even with his life on the line.
11:28 So Jules lays down a simple challenge.
11:30 "What? Say what again. Say what again. I dare you. I double dare you, mother****er.
11:36 Say what one more goddamn time."
11:38 Unfortunately, Brett just can't help himself.
11:41 Moral of the story? Don't piss off Samuel L. Jackson.
11:44 "Does he look like a ****?"
11:46 "What?"
11:48 Number 15. I'm the King of the World. Titanic
11:52 With the wind flowing in their hair and a new life ahead of them,
11:55 Jack and Fabrizio are ecstatic to be on board the Titanic,
11:58 the ship that even God himself couldn't sink. Supposedly.
12:02 Jack is so over the moon that he throws his arms in the air and lets out this dramatic shout.
12:07 "I'm the king of the world!"
12:12 His enthusiasm matches the theatricality of the scene,
12:15 drawing audiences into his moment of joy and evokes a strong sense of hope
12:19 that makes the film's conclusion all the more tragic.
12:22 "I will never let go, Jack. I'll never let go."
12:28 Number 14. Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya.
12:32 You killed my father. Prepare to die. The Princess Bride
12:35 "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
12:44 What's heroic revenge without a monologue? Fencing master Inigo Montoya has one of the best.
12:50 He's vowed to kill his father's murderer, the Vizier Count Rugen.
12:54 "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
13:02 At first, the furious passion behind his words doesn't seem to be enough to win the fight.
13:07 He is stabbed over and over again and seems to be losing strength.
13:11 That just makes it all the more satisfying to watch him repeat his catchphrase over and over
13:16 as he gets back up and takes Rugen down.
13:18 "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
13:24 Number 13. You can't handle the truth. A few good men.
13:28 "You snotty little bastard."
13:31 It's a line that's come to define courtroom drama.
13:34 As two Marines face murder charges,
13:36 Lieutenant Caffey boldly calls in Colonel Jessup to explain his role in events.
13:40 As the exchange degenerates into shouting, Caffey demands answers instead of excuses.
13:45 "You want answers? I think I'm entitled to them."
13:48 "You want answers!"
13:49 "I want the truth!"
13:50 "You can't handle the truth!"
13:52 Jessup's response is so blunt that it silences the room.
13:56 The Colonel's rage also shows us just how twisted his sense of honor really is.
14:00 Jack Nicholson's fierce performance keeps audiences coming back to the scene
14:04 and makes the line iconic.
14:06 "You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about it.
14:09 "Parties. You want me on that wall. You need me on that wall."
14:14 Number 12. Here's looking at you, kid.
14:16 "Casablanca."
14:17 "That plane leaves the ground and you're not with him, you'll regret it.
14:20 "Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life."
14:24 Goodbyes can be hard at the best of times, let alone in times of war.
14:28 It's not any easier for American expat Rick Blaine
14:30 when he tells Ilsa that she can't stay with him in Casablanca.
14:34 As he sacrifices his own happiness,
14:36 knowing that she'll be safer and happier taking the plane to Lisbon with her husband Victor Laszlo,
14:40 he offers some sage advice.
14:42 His farewell culminates in these iconic parting words,
14:45 a callback to the duo's time in Paris together.
14:48 Cool and noble, Rick's send-off is too smooth to argue with.
14:52 "Here's looking at you, kid."
14:53 Number 11. I see dead people.
14:56 "The Sixth Sense."
14:58 Cool is clearly troubled by something,
15:00 but his psychologist Malcolm can't seem to get a clear answer.
15:03 After the two establish some trust, however,
15:05 the young boy opens up about his terrifying secret.
15:08 "I see dead people."
15:10 The implications of his words are chilling,
15:12 whether or not Malcolm believes them at the time.
15:14 Cool's brief explanation imbues the film with a classic M. Night Shyamalan air of creepy mystery,
15:19 while dropping in just enough foreshadowing to enrich repeat viewings.
15:23 This is one scene that definitely takes on a new tone once you know the end.
15:28 "It doesn't even hurt anymore."
15:29 Number 10. You shall not pass.
15:32 The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring.
15:35 "You shall not pass!"
15:37 "Gandalf!"
15:38 Just as Frodo and the rest of the Fellowship are finally about to escape the mines of Moria,
15:43 a Balrog arrives to cut their mission short.
15:46 Despite a considerable size difference,
15:48 Gandalf squares off with the fiery beast and beats it back.
15:52 With all of his might, the great wizard stares down the Balrog
15:55 and lets out one battle cry for the ages.
15:58 "You shall not pass!"
16:03 Ian McKellen is utterly involved in this dominating performance,
16:09 and quite frankly, we would hate to be in the Balrog's shoes.
16:12 Number 9. I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
16:16 Apocalypse Now.
16:16 "Do you smell that? Do you smell that?"
16:20 "What?"
16:21 "Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that."
16:26 Francis Ford Coppola's epic war film was based on Joseph Conrad's novella, Heart of Darkness,
16:31 but included more than a few classic original lines of dialogue.
16:34 In one of the film's most famous scenes,
16:36 Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore practically beams as he watches his troops drop napalm in Vietnam.
16:41 "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."
16:44 His unusually chipper reaction to the oily stench is especially eerie,
16:48 because he throws it out there like it's a common turn of phrase.
16:51 Actor Robert Duvall's callous delivery amid horrifying carnage
16:54 perfectly captures the spirit of the movie.
16:57 "Smells like...
16:57 victory."
17:02 Number 8. Say hello to my little friend.
17:05 Scarface
17:05 Drug overlord Tony Montana carried so much charm in his rise to power
17:12 that he seemed to have a line for every situation.
17:15 So it came as no surprise that, as he was facing death from a rival kingpin's henchman,
17:20 Montana was inspired to give the goons a piece of his mind.
17:24 With lots of substances and heavy firepower to back him up,
17:27 Tony managed to be badass and hilarious all at the same time.
17:31 "Say hello to my little friend!"
17:33 The deranged mix of humor and violence was central to Tony's character,
17:39 and showed that he wouldn't let something like gunfire get him down.
17:42 Number 7. Here's Johnny, the Shining.
17:46 "I'm not gonna hurt you. I'm just gonna bash your brains."
17:50 Jack Nicholson's performance as Jack Torrance was all too believable,
17:53 and this one line is a perfect example.
17:56 Driven mad by supernatural forces in the Overlook Hotel,
18:00 Jack turns on his family, shopping through a bathroom door to reach his terrified wife.
18:05 His riff on the intro from The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson
18:08 was both absurd and horrifying all at once.
18:10 "Here's Johnny!"
18:12 Nicholson actually improvised the line,
18:16 and the scene wouldn't have been the same without it.
18:18 Taken from the climax, it's become emblematic of the movie.
18:22 Number 6. There's No Place Like Home.
18:25 The Wizard of Oz.
18:26 When Dorothy is whisked off to the magical land of Oz,
18:29 she realizes very quickly that she is far, far from home.
18:33 "Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."
18:37 While her quip about not being in Kansas is oft quoted,
18:40 her magical mantra at the end of her journey holds a closer tie to the film,
18:44 since uttering it is pivotal to the plot.
18:47 Turns out she had the power to return home all along.
18:49 She just didn't know it.
18:50 "There's no place like home."
18:53 The additional visuals of her ruby slippers
19:02 and the magical power of her incantation help etch this saying into people's memories.
19:06 "There's no place like home."
19:09 Number 5. You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat.
19:11 Jaws.
19:12 "Come on down and chomp some of this s***."
19:14 With a massive shark terrorizing Abbey Island,
19:16 police chief Martin Brody,
19:18 oceanographer Matt Hooper,
19:19 and grizzled professional shark hunter Quint head out to kill it.
19:23 While Brody is throwing bait into the water, however,
19:25 the monstrous shark sneaks up on him instead.
19:28 Realizing with shock how huge the shark really is,
19:31 the chief slowly backs away
19:33 and once in the cabin,
19:34 makes this deadpan observation to Quint.
19:37 "You're gonna need a bigger boat."
19:40 It's a humorous moment in a tense situation,
19:42 and filmmakers and fans alike quote it to this day.
19:45 Number 4. I'm Going to Make Him an Offer He Can't Refuse.
19:49 The Godfather.
19:50 "Well, how'd he do that?"
19:51 "My father made him an offer he couldn't refuse."
19:54 Few things are more ominous than a gangster being vague.
19:58 On the day of his daughter's wedding,
20:00 mafia patriarch Don Corleone listens to requests
20:02 from family members and associates.
20:05 When singer Johnny Fontaine comes whining about a movie role,
20:08 the Don soothes him with an ambiguous promise.
20:10 "I want you to rest well and a month from now,
20:12 this Hollywood big shot's gonna give you what you want."
20:15 "It's too late. They start shooting in a week.
20:19 I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."
20:21 Marlon Brando's confident and casual delivery
20:24 shows just how powerful Corleone is
20:26 long before you see his offer carried out.
20:28 The menace lurking just behind Don's otherwise innocuous statement
20:32 makes it one of the most memorable moments in mobster cinema.
20:35 Number 3. Frankly, My Dear, I Don't Give a Damn.
20:38 Gone With the Wind.
20:40 "I want to see if somewhere there isn't something left in life
20:42 with charm and grace.
20:43 You know what I'm talking about?"
20:46 "No. I only know that I love you."
20:49 "That's your misfortune."
20:51 Not all romances end happily ever after.
20:53 Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler's relationship is an emotional roller coaster.
20:58 After seeing Scarlett embracing Ashley Wilkes, Rhett has had enough
21:01 and it's then that Scarlett realizes she does love Rhett after all.
21:05 Viewers could have been forgiven for assuming
21:07 that Rhett would hear her heartfelt appeal and change his mind.
21:10 Instead, he shoots her down in a moment of brutal honesty
21:14 using language that was pretty risky for the times.
21:17 "You go. Where shall I go? What shall I do?"
21:20 "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."
21:23 Though the language has since become pedestrian,
21:25 the impact of Rhett's rejection has remained timeless.
21:28 Number 2. I'll Be Back. The Terminator.
21:32 "I'll be back."
21:34 Sure, out of context, it's banal.
21:36 But when a line's context involves a murderous time-traveling robot,
21:40 well, it changes a lot.
21:42 Arnold Schwarzenegger's monotone performance lends a sinister edge to the line,
21:46 especially since only the audience knows what he's capable of.
21:49 Even next to some of the Terminator's more colorful one-liners,
21:52 the comedy and tension here stick with you.
21:55 "I'll be back" instantly evokes Schwarzenegger and the Terminator franchise,
21:59 and the line has become a staple of pop culture parodies.
22:02 "Wait, where are you going?"
22:03 "I'll be back."

22:20 Number 1. No, I Am Your Father.
22:24 Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.
22:28 "Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father."
22:32 Luke's quest to defeat the Galactic Empire puts him head-to-head with the evil Darth Vader.
22:37 But right as Luke denounces Vader for killing his dad,
22:40 the villain reveals an even darker truth.
22:42 "He told me you killed him."
22:44 "No, I am your father."
22:47 Given how shocking this twist is in the story,
22:50 Luke's devastated reaction mirrored the audience's.
22:53 While "May the Force Be With You" appears in the series more,
22:56 the emotional force behind this line is much stronger.
22:59 The fact that it's misquoted endlessly as "Luke, I am your father"
23:02 only shows how closely it's attached to the franchise.
23:06 "That's impossible!"
23:07 "Search your feelings, you know it to be true."
23:12 "No! No!"
