00:00 President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. faced a lot of problems during the joint session of the Australian Parliament.
00:07 The President, who is a man, had a lot of important things to say,
00:10 including the Philippines' claim that it is a violation of the rights of the West Philippine Sea.
00:16 Alan Francisco will tell you in detail.
00:19 I shall never tire of repeating the declaration that I made from the first day that I took office.
00:28 I will not allow any attempt by any foreign power to take even one square inch of our sovereign territory.
00:38 That is what President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. gave as a gift to the Australian Parliament,
00:45 primarily for a President of the Philippines.
00:48 According to President Marcos, just like the situation during World War II,
00:53 the Philippines is now witnessing the issue of regional peace and regional stability again because of the South China Sea.
01:01 The protection of the South China Sea as a vital critical global artery is crucial to the preservation of regional peace and, I dare say, of global peace.
01:12 But, just like before, the country is again defending its sovereignty.
01:18 The challenges that we face may be formidable, but equally formidable is our resolve.
01:25 We will not yield.
01:27 President Marcos, in Australia, thanked the Philippines for its support in the South China Sea maritime claims.
01:35 We draw strength from the consistent and unequivocal support of Australia and the international community
01:43 for the lawful exercise of our rights which have been settled under international law.
01:50 And so, on behalf of the Filipino people, I thank you, Australia, for standing with the Republic of the Philippines.
01:59 The President also believes that concerned nations should maintain their defense of the unified and universal character of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
02:11 And the strength of the Philippines stems from the support of nations like Australia for a legal exercise of their rights.
02:19 Once again, we must come together as partners to face the common challenges confronting the region.
02:26 Not one single country can do this by itself.
02:30 No single force can counter them by themselves.
02:34 This is why our strategic partnership has grown more important than ever.
02:39 We must reinforce each other's strengths.
02:42 We must protect the peace that we fought for during the war and have jealously guarded in the decades since.
02:48 We must oppose actions that clearly denigrate the rule of law.
02:53 President Marcos also emphasized the issue of climate change in his speech.
02:57 He needs multilateralism to address this issue.
03:01 He called for the government to take action in advancing a sustainable and inclusive energy transition towards carbon neutrality.
03:11 Our past successes should inspire us to forge ahead in building the future to which we aspire.
03:18 For the Philippines, we continue to see that future in our identity as Asians and as members of the Pacific family.
03:26 Together with our Asian neighbors, and in that group I include Australia,
03:31 we continue to work for a regional community that empowers all of our citizens.
