Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast NFL Scouting Combine update #3, from in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Transcript
00:00 Hi everybody, this is Hondo Carpenter from Sports Illustrated's Fan Nation.
00:06 It's the Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast.
00:08 It's great to be with you all this morning here at the Indianapolis Convention Center
00:12 where shortly quarterbacks will begin to talk today and we're going to talk to all of them.
00:19 We're going to be talking to Spencer Rattler, Bo Nix, Michael Penix, JJ McCarthy, Caleb
00:23 Williams, Drake May, and Jaden Daniels of course.
00:30 We're going to have it all covered.
00:32 I want to very quickly before I dive into today's podcast, our numbers are through the
00:37 roof.
00:38 Nobody's covering the combine for you like we are and you guys are responding.
00:42 I want to personally thank you for liking, sharing, subscribing, reading the articles
00:47 when you go to si.com/nfl/raiders, follow us on X, formerly known as Twitter @HondoCarpenter
00:56 and on Instagram @HondoSR.
00:59 Thank you, thank you, thank you.
01:02 I have a ton of information to give you today and then I really want to encourage you to
01:08 don't miss Sunday's podcast as well.
01:15 Don't miss any of them, but the Sunday recap one, I'm going to give you a ton of information
01:20 that I'm getting in talking to coaches and NFL executives and talking to them every single
01:25 day.
01:26 So, I got a lot I want to hit on, obviously the QBs today, but before I get to that, I
01:34 got a few of you who emailed me because through our Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast with
01:41 Hondo Carpenter on YouTube, we put our shorts up, which are videos that are under a minute.
01:49 And we don't put those on the site because they're too short, but we put them up there
01:56 and thousands of you have watched them and shared them and I really appreciate that.
02:01 And I've had a few people email and ask, why do you put a video up of a guy who doesn't
02:07 seem excited to be a Raider, doesn't seem to care?
02:12 Let me just put it to you this way.
02:16 I have always told you that my purpose or my why or how I do things is I want to give
02:27 you the information and then let you disseminate it the way that you feel it is.
02:35 Some of you may think of players just being coy.
02:37 Hey, I don't want to tick off the other 31 teams talking too much about the Raiders.
02:42 Some of you are like, it doesn't seem like he wants to be a Raider.
02:46 I agree, but I don't think that's my place to make that decision.
02:50 I think you need to hear it, watch it, see the body language, and then you chew on it
02:56 a little bit before you regurgitate your opinion on it.
03:00 So that's why we do it.
03:01 Now, I'm going to tell you, I know of guys who teams were high on, and this is no one
03:10 from this year, that teams were really high on who did their interviews and they were
03:16 like, that guy didn't even really seem like he wanted to come to us.
03:21 I know one first round pick that a team loved.
03:25 They loved him and they spent two minutes with the kid and they're like, oh no, no,
03:34 no, no.
03:35 And they moved on.
03:37 That's why you see some of these young men who are very adept to interviews, prepared.
03:45 Some it's all about me.
03:49 Well that works.
03:50 There are some teams that perennially draft bad.
03:54 They're going to be fine with that.
03:58 There's going to be a lot of teams though that aren't.
04:00 No, the we is more important than me.
04:04 And so that's why we put those videos up.
04:06 I want to give a big shout out to Aiden Champion, one of our lead writers.
04:12 I always call him Aiden O'Connell because I would say cover Aiden, but that's just me
04:16 being stupid.
04:18 But I want to give a big shout out to Aiden Champion, Carter Landis.
04:22 You know, Aiden writes three stories a day on our site.
04:25 Carter Landis writes two, Braden Reedy writes one a day.
04:30 These guys, the four of us are just trying to pump out information for you.
04:35 And I really hope that you're enjoying it.
04:37 Obviously the numbers say you are, but I want to give a shout out to those guys.
04:41 We're all working hard.
04:42 Last night we went to a movie just to relax a little bit and I took them to Lou Malinati's
04:48 for some great Chicago pizza.
04:51 And I know we're in Indianapolis, but Lou's is here.
04:53 So it was fun.
04:54 And, but they're great guys.
04:55 And I just want to publicly thank them.
04:57 Just like I thank you guys.
04:59 You guys are amazing.
05:01 Raider Nation, you guys have just been absolutely incredible.
05:05 It's a pleasure to serve you.
05:08 It's a pleasure to have gotten to meet so many of you.
05:11 By the way, I've got back at my house, I've gotten all the notices.
05:15 I've gotten all ton of the merch in.
05:20 I've sent out one pair of Air Force Ones.
05:23 I've got two pair going out on Monday morning that I've given away.
05:28 Shirts and other merch and stuff just from you guys.
05:31 Just really appreciate all of you.
05:33 You've just been amazing.
05:34 So thank you for letting us serve you.
05:36 All right.
05:37 So quarterbacks.
05:38 Now we're talking to seven of them today and we're going to talk to Spencer Rattler.
05:45 We're going to be talking to Penix, JJ McCarthy, Bo Nix.
05:51 We're going to be talking of course, the top three, Drake May, Jaden Daniels, and Caleb
05:56 Williams.
05:57 A lot of interesting things going around here.
06:00 Now you may remember for several weeks, I've been telling you that the quarter, the teams
06:06 that draft quarterbacks very, very well have been telling me they are not on the Caleb
06:11 Williams trend, but they were on JJ McCarthy.
06:15 And if you're paying attention, you're hearing that starting to get out now through other
06:19 media outlets.
06:22 It's really interesting.
06:24 I'm going to get in more as the draft approaches on what others are saying.
06:30 But remember when we're passing out to you information, we're not taking it through a
06:41 filter of what we think.
06:45 That's not the way we operate.
06:46 We don't think you're stupid, but we are going to pass on.
06:49 So if you don't agree with the opinion, that doesn't bother us.
06:52 I'm not God.
06:53 You can say, "Hey, I know I disagree with this."
06:56 Okay.
06:57 No big deal.
06:58 I'm going to trust the people who get paid millions of dollars to do this and have a
07:02 track record of success over anyone else, including me.
07:06 I mean, I do this every single day.
07:08 I think I have a good handle, but I don't think my handle is even as close.
07:13 Nobody's paying me tens of millions of dollars to pick a quarterback because I have a track
07:17 record of picking successful quarterbacks.
07:21 So with that said, we're passing all of that on.
07:24 Got some really interesting stuff.
07:26 Obviously, looking forward to talking to Jaden about AP, about his relationship with
07:31 AP.
07:32 It's going to be really, really good.
07:35 I feel like though I didn't give enough attention yesterday.
07:39 I know I touched it, but I don't think I gave enough attention talking to Tom Telesco, talking
07:44 to Antonio Pierce, and talking to people off the record as well, where I'm not going to
07:52 name them, but it's okay to disseminate what they've told me.
07:58 If you're overlooking Aiden O'Connell, you're doing that at your own risk.
08:04 No one in this franchise, I'm talking about coaches and management, have given up on Aiden
08:11 O'Connell.
08:12 Now, I said yesterday and I stand by it, at this point today, right now, I do not see
08:19 the Raiders moving up to one, two, or three.
08:24 It doesn't mean that they won't.
08:26 It just means right now at this moment, I don't see that happening.
08:31 As the process gets down the road and they take a long look at some things, then there
08:38 is an opportunity.
08:40 Maybe they change their mind.
08:42 But I'm just telling you as of right now, I think it's too...
08:45 When you think your franchise is close, and let me tell you, nobody's in rebuilding mode.
08:49 I was asked on a national show yesterday, "What would be the biggest sign to you that
08:54 the Raiders are rebuilding?"
08:56 I said, "If they had traded Devante Adams."
09:01 Now, having touched that, I want to talk about this real quick and I'm going to make this
09:07 off my notes here.
09:17 NFL Network yesterday, even after Tom Telesco said, "He's a Raider," still talking about
09:23 the Raiders trading them.
09:24 I know they have to fill time.
09:26 I'm not against them.
09:27 I'm not mad at them.
09:28 I don't hate them.
09:29 But on NFL Network, good guys, gals, good people, but you have to understand Raider
09:37 Nation draws attention.
09:41 I mean, when Tom Telesco used to come here as the general manager of the Chargers, we
09:51 were talking about this the other night, some of us beat writers at dinner.
09:55 Some of us Raiders beat writers, and I don't remember who said it or I would credit them,
09:59 but I didn't.
10:00 But one of them made a comment, that had to be a welcome to the Raider Nation moment.
10:06 When Tom Telesco gets up in the media, there's a hundred guys there.
10:11 When you were the Chargers, it may have been 10, 15.
10:17 And so Raider Nation gets clicks and views and reads.
10:22 That's a compliment to you guys.
10:23 It tells you how powerful you are.
10:25 We also have to be careful about places that that is the sole purpose.
10:33 Would the Raiders trade Devante?
10:37 And I've told you all along, if somebody was willing to do something stupid.
10:45 But most NFL teams are not willing to do something stupid, even though I think some of them are
10:52 run stupidly.
10:54 And there are teams that you see every year perennially drafting high because they don't
10:59 run their franchise as well.
11:01 Even most of them avoid stupidity.
11:08 So do I think if somebody did something stupid, they would?
11:11 Yes.
11:12 Do I think it's probable?
11:13 No.
11:14 I mean, Telesco, what more do you want to say?
11:16 He's a Raider.
11:18 But I wanted to make that point to you.
11:28 Sorry, it was a text that I'm going to be talking to you about something in a minute.
11:31 But it's going to be very difficult for him to go anywhere because the Raiders have no
11:38 desire.
11:39 The only player that I think would absolutely not be traded, even if somebody did something
11:45 stupid was Max Crosby.
11:47 And I support that because he is so young in his career.
11:51 He isn't even the best player he's going to be.
11:53 It's not even close.
11:57 He's still ascending.
11:58 I think Devontae is at his peak.
12:01 He's very good.
12:02 I think he's the best in the NFL, but he's been in a lot longer.
12:07 So if somebody is willing to be stupid for a guy that even though he's peaked, and I
12:12 don't think he's going to go anywhere from his peak for a few years, but he's peaked.
12:16 Okay.
12:17 Maybe you consider him even though he's the best in the NFL.
12:23 But I think Max is the only untouchable player and I believe that vehemently, and I have
12:29 reason to believe that vehemently.
12:35 Just don't panic.
12:38 I did not even witness NFL Network saying it.
12:41 I just got emails from people, "Hey, I know this is what Telesco said.
12:45 Did he lie?"
12:46 Because take a deep breath.
12:49 I think there's a couple of things about this new Raider leadership that you're going to
12:53 appreciate.
12:54 Josh McDaniels, I don't believe he would lie.
12:58 Now, some of you are going to point back to Waller and a couple of other things, and I've
13:02 told you before.
13:04 I understand why you feel that way.
13:05 I think there were some circumstances behind the scene that made things change.
13:11 But Josh would, there's a lot of times he wouldn't tell you stuff.
13:13 And you may remember me telling you, you had to almost listen to John for what he didn't
13:24 say.
13:25 I mean, had to listen to Josh.
13:27 There are times I don't think that John Gruden minded telling you things that probably weren't
13:32 accurate.
13:33 I don't think he's a liar, but telling you some things that weren't accurate to steer
13:36 people in different direction.
13:38 It's just to quote, someone told me, it was Will Ferrell on Saturday Night Live playing
13:45 George Bush, "Strategery."
13:48 That's not a political statement.
13:49 I just always thought that was funny.
13:52 That's just "Strategery," from John Gruden.
13:58 I don't think he was lying.
14:02 AP and Tlesko aren't those guys.
14:05 Their answer would be, "Well, you never know.
14:06 We're going to do what's best for the franchise."
14:09 I like this.
14:11 I like this a lot.
14:13 So unless somebody does something stupid, Devante's not going anywhere.
14:17 So take a deep breath.
14:18 I don't think anybody wants him to go anywhere.
14:20 He's a great player, but this team's not rebuilding.
14:22 And if somebody's willing to do something stupid, that doesn't mean that they are rebuilding.
14:30 If they would have got rid of him now or a little bit later, and it would have been for
14:34 less than stupid, then yeah, that's an absolute sign.
14:37 We're rebuilding.
14:38 And he's not going to be at his peak long enough for us to get to where we need to go.
14:42 So we trade him, which is what you should do if you're rebuilding.
14:46 Raiders aren't.
14:47 They're locked in.
14:48 They're committed.
14:50 They're committed.
14:52 This team has a ton of talent on it.
14:56 Are there holes?
14:58 Yes.
14:59 Can they fill those holes?
15:01 Absolutely.
15:02 Not going to get into it now because we're here at the Combine, but I do want you to
15:05 know I'm hearing a lot of significant buzz on potential free agents.
15:11 I'm going to get to that later before free agency starts, but there's a lot of buzz.
15:17 Now part of the reason that I don't want to get into it now is because we're at the Combine.
15:22 We're talking about draft picks.
15:24 But second of all, you guys know my position.
15:27 If it's something that was in the past and already happened, but there are times I don't
15:32 report things that are in the future or potentially coming if I think it could hurt the Raiders.
15:41 I don't work for the Raiders, but I also don't think as a media member that it's my place
15:46 to be in such a hurry to report everything first that potentially hurts.
15:51 There is one particular free agent and I don't know that I would call them a whale like getting
15:58 a Devante or signing a super elite player.
16:09 I think you can be an elite player and not be a whale.
16:15 But I want you to know there is one particular player that I believe the Raiders are very
16:20 interested in.
16:21 I think he is very interested in being a Raider.
16:25 It's going to be interesting to see how the dollars work out.
16:28 I don't think either team, either when I say team meaning team player or team Raiders are
16:34 talking nothing's being done immorally or against the rules, but there is definite interest.
16:40 And I think that would really boost the interest of Raider Nation.
16:46 I'm going to get into all that.
16:47 I think to report it now may make some other teams do some things that could hurt the Raiders.
16:57 And that's not what I'm going to do.
17:02 To have the first click, I want to take you back.
17:05 Remember free agency when the first day of free agency a couple of years ago and everybody's
17:11 panicked.
17:12 Why did nothing happen?
17:13 Put it on social media, relax, relax.
17:19 And then you saw the Devante foot shoe drop.
17:23 I'm just telling you, I don't think anything's imminent.
17:26 They can't even talk, but there are guys that want to play for AP.
17:34 One other quick note on free agency and this is it.
17:36 I'm going to get into more of this later, but I really admire the way AP and Tom Telesco,
17:43 where there are holes, are going to coaches who are coaching those holes.
17:48 Is there somebody in your background like Jack Jones was that you think fits here?
17:56 And then asking the staff as a whole, maybe you're not coaching this position.
18:01 AP was a defensive coordinator with Arizona State, was a linebacker coach here.
18:06 Then he gets the job as the intern and brings in Jack.
18:08 But is there somebody in your background that you have a relationship with that you think
18:12 would fit a hole here?
18:14 I really am impressed with how Telesco is communicating.
18:20 I'm going to be very honest with you.
18:23 I thought he would be good because him and I share several mutual friends.
18:28 I've already told you that, who told me how much they respect him and how good he was.
18:34 But he's even better than I thought he was going to be.
18:36 And I know for a fact he has surprised people in the building with his listening skills.
18:44 Tremendous listener.
18:46 One person said to me, in all my years in the NFL, and I'm paraphrasing here a little
18:52 bit, but with all my years in the NFL, I don't know I've ever met a better listener.
18:57 And he's earned a ton of respect in that building.
18:59 In fact, a couple of times AP has said, "That's Telesco.
19:04 I'm going to let Telesco handle it."
19:07 So anyways, I think that's something that you want to really keep an eye on.
19:14 But I think there's a lot of reason as a Raider to be excited about what's going to happen
19:18 in free agency.
19:19 So the kind of things that you're going to want to watch today from the quarterbacks
19:24 is who have the Raiders talked to.
19:27 That's going to tell you a lot.
19:29 And then you want to watch those players' skillset.
19:35 And whoever they bring in is going to instantly have to compete.
19:40 Now here is what I believe at this moment is going to happen.
19:43 I do not believe they're going to go get a big fish like a Kirk Cousins.
19:47 I don't think they're going to go get a big fish quarterback.
19:53 I told you before, I think Justin Fields for now is dead.
19:58 Doesn't mean that can't come back if the Chicago Bears come down to reality.
20:04 I am going to tell you, I think the Chicago Bears have had a reality check.
20:09 And it's not because Justin isn't talented.
20:11 It's because people know they want Caleb.
20:17 Some of the best quarterback drafting teams do a tremendous job of not making it obvious
20:23 of who they want.
20:26 And Chicago is not one of those great drafting teams.
20:31 Let's just leave it there and just be honest.
20:34 So the market's falling because everybody knows the chances are they're not going to
20:41 pick Caleb and keep Justin.
20:45 They may.
20:46 The way Justin's contract is, and they have some cash, but it's just going to cause dissension
20:52 in the locker room because the locker room wants Justin.
20:55 And so it wouldn't be wise.
20:58 But let's be honest, the Bears don't always do things wisely.
21:05 And if you think, oh, Hondo's a bear hater, I'm not.
21:07 I've had tons of friends that played from Jimmy Miller on Sirius XM radio.
21:12 Y'all know Jimmy.
21:14 I've been friends with Jimmy Miller for a long time.
21:16 In fact, we were joking the other day in the media room.
21:18 I mean, in the press conference rooms, laughing and joking around.
21:24 Great guy.
21:25 He was a bear.
21:27 Loved him.
21:28 I've had a ton of friends that played for the Bears.
21:29 So I don't hate the organization at all, but they've not always been the epitome of smart.
21:35 So it's important to see his market dropping.
21:39 Do I think today Justin Fields is a viable option for the Raiders?
21:42 Today?
21:43 No.
21:44 Reality?
21:45 Maybe.
21:46 I think they could draft a quarterback to go with Aiden and they go get a veteran.
21:51 Maybe they could go in with two rookies.
21:57 I think that's a very low percentage.
22:00 Could be.
22:03 But I think they go get a veteran and then they go get another rookie and they go into
22:08 OTAs and mini camp.
22:10 Aiden is QB1 and you got to beat him.
22:13 I love that strategy.
22:14 I love it.
22:16 If a J.J. McCarthy drops to 13 and I don't think he will, you nab him.
22:22 If not, maybe you look to the second round.
22:25 If not, maybe there's a guy you find that you like in this process and you pick in the
22:29 third round, fourth, whatever.
22:34 But there's going to be a lot of holes there for the Raiders to fill.
22:38 This is going to be an exponentially better football team at the end.
22:43 I'm hearing a lot of talk about Raiders getting ready to really begin pegging who are our
22:54 free agents we want back.
22:58 I know this will surprise a lot of you because he takes a lot of heat on social media, but
23:03 Jermaine Illumina there's a lot of interest around the NFL and Jermaine.
23:07 Am I saying there's 30 teams?
23:09 No, but there is a lot of interest.
23:11 I know of six teams right now.
23:15 I'm very interested in Jermaine.
23:17 I'll tell you one team I wouldn't be shocked if he ended up is in New York with the G-Men
23:23 reunited with Carmen Bracillo.
23:25 By the way, I saw Carmen yesterday and always great to spend time with him.
23:29 What a wonderful human being and wish him well.
23:33 But I wouldn't be shocked if Jermaine and no, Carmen didn't tell me that, but I wouldn't
23:39 be shocked if Jermaine had a lot of interest there.
23:42 I know Raider fans, some of them go after him a lot on social media and he responds.
23:49 I wouldn't if I was him, but he does.
23:54 But he's very highly regarded, but the Raiders are prioritizing the free agents that they
24:00 feel like they need to get back.
24:03 And I would expect to see some movement next week, starting to move towards really defining
24:11 who are we going back with?
24:13 I will tell you, most of these guys want to come back.
24:18 They would love to come back and stay with AP.
24:23 So I thought that was very, very fascinating.
24:27 And it just reiterates that he has command of that locker room.
24:30 So that's another one I thought was very, very, I think that's very important.
24:38 So next I want to talk about two more things that will be done.
24:41 It started to leak yesterday about the NFL using AI and other technology to measure first
24:48 downs.
24:49 Now, I want you to know right up front, I am not an IT guy.
24:54 Thank God for the folks over in Henderson, Green Valley.
25:05 I think it's called Computer Repair.
25:07 Literally, I think that's the name of them.
25:09 But wonderful people.
25:10 I know they're not sponsors.
25:11 In fact, I'm going to double check to make sure their name is, I get their name.
25:15 Yeah, Simple Computer Repair.
25:17 Thank God for Simple Computer Repair in Henderson.
25:21 You fix everything and they're very well priced.
25:24 And again, I get nothing for that.
25:26 So that's a free plug.
25:29 I'm not an IT guy, but the way it was explained to me was there's some piece of electronics
25:37 that is on the football.
25:40 I don't know if it's on both tips or just in one.
25:45 And that literally down to the thousandth of an inch, they set the ball, check, yep,
25:51 first down, let's go.
25:52 Keep up the pace of the game.
25:54 That seems weird to me to get rid of a chain gang.
25:57 But I also know I'm an old man.
25:59 It could be a get off my lawn moment.
26:02 And I just think the more you take the human element out of the game, I think it's better.
26:14 But at the same time, then you're trusting who's ever in charge of the electronics.
26:20 And I think the NFL just has so many issues with trust.
26:24 So but I do think it's interesting.
26:25 I like it.
26:26 I'd like to see what it goes.
26:28 And then I think you let the NFL teams make the decision.
26:34 And which is how they would do it.
26:36 But it's intriguing to me.
26:39 You know, John Shop and I have been advocating for a long time, adding another official whose
26:45 job it is to, you know, look at things quickly and make quick adjustments or say, hey, that's
26:51 not what this was.
26:53 But I think that's something that's going to be very interesting to watch.
26:58 All right.
27:00 Last thing I want to talk about here from the combine today, then I got to get to work.
27:02 I mean, we got so much going on with quarterbacks today.
27:07 But this is very, very important.
27:12 When you look at what's going on with the Raiders, I told you the other day, all the
27:22 buzz.
27:23 Vast amount of buzz.
27:26 A lot, a lot of buzz on the Raiders.
27:28 A lot of attention on the Raiders.
27:31 And when you're watching this unfold.
27:41 In the NFL, I always tell you, I don't listen to what coaches say at press conferences.
27:47 I listen to what players say.
27:52 And I don't listen to what media say, myself included, when it comes to hype.
27:58 And I think I'm different because I don't really offer you my opinion.
28:02 I'm offering you the opinions around the league.
28:06 And when you talk to people around the league, I think there is an element with AP of skepticism
28:14 of AP, not his character, not him as a man.
28:22 I think they're like, all right, he beat some people.
28:29 That win on Christmas day at Arrowhead, making Taylor Swift just watch the Raiders pound
28:38 him, that got some attention.
28:44 A lot of folk were like, all right, there's something there now.
28:48 There's something there.
28:51 But the buzz about the Raiders, I can't tell you how many friends of mine that I talked
28:56 to, and I have tons of them in the league, asking me stuff about the Raiders.
29:02 Now, obviously I'm never going to give up anything that could hurt the Raiders.
29:06 But one of them said to me, what is AP like?
29:09 And I'm like, some of the ignorant media call him rah-rah.
29:15 And I said, he certainly is a influence that for lack of a better word, biographer, the
29:23 soul, I mean, these guys are ready to run through a wall.
29:29 By the way, if you did not watch the interview with AP, as soon as this podcast is over or
29:35 listen to it, you got to go get it.
29:38 You got to go get it like right now.
29:41 And you got to go watch it.
29:44 But he is demanding.
29:50 He's much more demanding than Josh and the physicality was through the roof.
29:55 So people are watching, Raiders are coming.
29:59 And Raider Nation, this is my fifth year covering the silver and black.
30:05 This is the best place that the Raiders have been in financially with the salary cap, leadership,
30:11 flexibility, talent, all of it.
30:14 I think you need to just sit back and get yourself a diet Mountain Dew or a water, you
30:24 know, throw some pork belly on the grill and man, enjoy this off season.
30:31 Cause you got people's attention now.
30:34 You got people's attention.
30:36 Now at least people are not looking at the Raiders and automatically saying W. They know
30:42 there's some physicality there.
30:44 And with everything I've talked to you over the last 30 minutes, you kind of know now
30:47 what were the directions going.
30:49 We're going to have a lot more post combine.
