00:00 Hi, this is the part 2 of the topic how to deal with bad habits.
00:12 In this video we are going to talk about how to deal with hair pulling, nail biting and
00:16 teeth grinding.
00:17 Sometimes the kids try to fidget with the hair or they try to pull their hair very badly.
00:23 So you know there are two kinds of hair pulling.
00:26 Sometimes when the child is very bored or doing some work and you know the finger subconsciously
00:31 goes around the hair and the child starts twirling the hair and doing the work.
00:37 And there are times when the child is bored so just as a time pass they just try to move
00:42 their fingers around the hair.
00:44 So this is one kind of hair pulling and the second kind of hair pulling which is more
00:49 of a serious concern is about pulling the hair very hard.
00:53 This can lead to baldness and sometimes loss of hair.
00:56 This happens maybe because the child is really anxious or unable to find solution to his
01:02 problems.
01:03 So let's try to comfort the child and give a happy environment to the child.
01:07 Also let's try to find out why the child is behaving in this way.
01:11 We can counsel the child ourselves or maybe we can take the child to a professional counsellor
01:16 to find the reason behind this action.
01:19 And let's try not to punish the child for this action.
01:23 The second point is about nail biting.
01:27 Many kids they try to bite nail out of boredom or when they are too absorbed in some activity
01:34 or they are anxious or nervous and they are not able to find solution to this problem
01:40 to a particular problem of theirs.
01:42 And you know when the child is continuously biting his nails the edges become very rough.
01:49 To soothe the edges again the child ends up chewing the nails.
01:54 So as a parent what I can do is I can constantly moisturize my child's hands especially at
02:00 night because that's a healing time for the body.
02:03 And maybe sit with the child and communicate to the child what is the problem, why is he
02:10 going into this habit again and again, is there something which is causing him distress.
02:15 Maybe you can be of some help to him, you can tell him like that.
02:18 So being with your child when he needs, when you see that this action is a prolonged action.
02:24 So maybe it's time for you that you have to sit with your child and help him come out
02:30 of this situation.
02:31 The third point is about teeth grinding.
02:33 Teeth grinding it happens especially when the child is asleep and it happens approximately
02:39 in 15% of the children.
02:41 One theory says that it's a nervous habit which happens because of anxiety.
02:46 And one theory says that it's a subconscious effort when the child wants to correct an
02:51 irregular bite.
02:52 As a parent what I can do is that when the child is asleep and I notice that the child
02:58 is into teeth grinding I can either just tap on the child's face to avoid that action or
03:05 make the child move without waking up the child to distract his attention while he is
03:09 asleep on that particular thing which is causing him to grind his teeth.
03:14 And all these habits are which we have discussed in these two videos are childhood habits.
03:21 They would eventually stop after a point of time.
03:24 So please try and provide a happy safe secure and a loving environment to your child.
03:29 And if these problems continue I request you to please consult your doctor or a counselor.
