00:26 The Grande Depart for the 82nd edition of Paris Nice.
00:30 It might be known as the race to the sun, but getting to the sunny French Riviera is the hard part.
00:35 The first European World Tour race of the 2024 season,
00:39 the big names chasing the title as well as a perfect tune-up for the grand tours to come.
00:44 Something for all to enjoy, sprinters, rulers and climbers alike,
00:47 but the spotlight falling on Primoz Roglic in his first outing for Bora-Hansgrove,
00:52 sharing the stage with Remco Evenepoel, both targeting the Tour de France this season.
00:57 Yet home rider David Goda wants to build on last year when he stood between Tadi Pogacar and Joris Winnegaard on the podium.
01:04 [Music]
01:07 So far so good, everything fine.
01:10 Just look forward to come here and start the season.
01:15 I mean, after all the years you collect a lot of different kind of emotions,
01:19 definitely always keeping the best ones.
01:23 And yeah, I mean, nice race.
01:27 And yeah, like I said, looking forward to go day by day towards home.
01:32 [Music]
01:36 I think we are here with a very strong team, motivated team.
01:40 We want to do at least what we did here last year, is to go out with the stage.
01:44 And yeah, then in terms of GC we will see, but I think I can be confident in my teammates, in myself,
01:50 to be up there in the GC by the end of the week.
01:53 So lots of goals for this week.
01:55 [Music]
01:58 We all know that Rennies is a race that for four days will be a classic.
02:02 It's still a classic.
02:04 We will race in general classification, of course.
02:07 It's not a goal to say, "No, we have to do better than last year."
02:10 That is to say, win, we have to go back to the podium, to be top 5, top 10.
02:13 We are going to run like a leader.
02:15 Remco and Roglic's rivalry ready to continue for the Slovene,
02:20 his first race of the season as the journey south began.
02:24 Paris-Nice 2024 starting around the town of Les Mereux for the 15th time in the race's history.
02:30 A route peppered with Category 3 ascents before finishing on a tough uphill ramp.
02:36 Two times up the 14% gradient offered by the Côte d'Averville,
02:41 a bonus sprint awaiting the summit of the Côte de Montaigneville.
02:45 The GC riders needed to be on the ball at the front of the pack right from the word go.
02:49 Sprinters in the limelight as well perhaps the favorites.
02:53 [Music]
02:58 While three riders were itching to get underway,
03:01 Total Energy's Mathieu Bourgodeaux following the EF Education Easy Post pairing
03:06 of Stéphane Beziger and Jonas Rutsch.
03:09 Over 45 kilometers per hour but an initial lead of around three minutes fell to a minute 20
03:15 as the trio battled to the top of Côte d'Averville.
03:19 Rutsch was the only of the trio without a Paris-Nice stage success to speak of,
03:23 yet it was the German who led them over the top with Polkadot points on the line.
03:28 Two teams managing the peloton, the newly named Visma-Lisa Bike aided by Lidl Trek,
03:37 the latter aiming to meet the needs of Mance Pedersen, the former world champion fancied his chances.
03:43 We know that the final fits me really well and we have a strong team for a final like this.
03:52 So definitely we are aiming to win the stage today.
03:56 It's going to be tough, it's not going to be a full bunch sprint with just the whole peloton rolling into the finish.
04:02 But it's a top class bike race so I think it's not a lot of guys you will see being dropped.
04:07 Beziger decided to sit back and be absorbed by the peloton.
04:13 The Swiss' teammates Rutsch and Bourgodou were finally caught at kilometer 119
04:18 but they stayed at the front in search of further points, Rutsch doing enough for a Polkadot Monday.
04:24 Yet heading into the final 30 kilometers there was a nervous energy.
04:28 The time at Monteville ending with an intermediate sprint with bonus seconds up for grabs.
04:34 Jorgensen flies and it's Remco a little bit late to the party here.
04:40 Is he going to be able to get on terms in time?
04:43 It's all going backwards for the lot of Destiny Squad.
04:46 Nice little lead out but have they managed to put their man into prime position?
04:51 Well Remco is not going to get there in time.
04:53 It's Jorgensen that's going to take the maximum bonus points.
04:56 Matteo Jorgensen ahead of Evenepoel and Egan Bernal while Roglic happy to remain in the shadows for now.
05:04 The trio initially held court but Wismas, Jorgensen with little desire to help out Remco.
05:09 A second traverse up the Cote d'Irville and time for the first attack.
05:14 Launched by Bernal but mashed and overhauled by Soudal's Red Devil.
05:19 Evenepoel over the top with Roglic having bridged the gap to sit on his wheel.
05:24 Then Anthony Tergy took everyone by surprise.
05:27 The 29 year old digging out a 15 second gap but the Frenchman's brave solo ended with 2km of road remaining.
05:34 It was time for the sprinters to start their engines.
05:37 Trenton also moves up on the outside but it's Pedersen who's ready to launch into the final bend.
05:45 He's over 200m to go so he's a little bit vulnerable here.
05:49 Coy through the final bend on the tail of Mats Pedersen. Coy comes off the wheel of Pedersen.
05:54 Has he got the legs for the fight? Pedersen goes for a long one. That's the way he plays it.
05:58 Pedersen is going to get there. Is he? I think it's Olaf Coy.
06:01 Oh, blanket finish. It's Coy that raises his arms.
06:05 Déjà vu for Pedersen.
06:07 Beaten in an almost identical fashion on stage 5 last year by Olaf Coy.
06:13 The Flying Dutchman did it again at the first opportunity.
06:16 A continuation of a blossoming campaign after wins at the Clasca de Almera and a stage of the UAE Tour.
06:23 The 22 year old rewarded after a hard day's biking.
06:26 I think we knew it would be hard but we definitely wanted to go for it.
06:32 I was in a good position thanks to the guys.
06:35 Then I had to suffer on my way up the climbs.
06:39 Then we knew we would be fighting for the win here.
06:43 In the end it was a really hard sprint but I'm really happy to take the win.
06:49 Coy, the first leader of the 2024 edition of Paris-Nice.
06:54 Adorning yellow with pride on the road to Montagny.
06:57 A second stage win in the event after stage 5 last year.
07:01 And the first Dutchman in 5 years and 6th ever to be overall leader.
07:06 Mads Pedersen just ahead of American Jorgensen and Evenepoel and Bernal Satin the top 10.
07:13 The rest of the sprinters green with envy but Coy will pass the jersey on to Pedersen.
07:19 21 year old Laurence Pithy with a fine third on the day.
07:23 EF Education invested a lot and it paid off.
07:27 Roosch the current king of the mountain.
07:29 The German also collected the combativity award.
07:32 Racking up the jerseys giving Coy is still only 22.
07:39 Remco Evenepoel scoring some useful bonus seconds on the road.
07:43 With an eye on the climbs early in the week.
07:46 8 different nationalities in the under 23 top 10.
07:50 Stage 2 continues with a flat if exposed run from Trois-Villes to Montagny.
07:57 Crosswinds aside it should be a day without major challenges.
08:00 The sprinters who missed out will be desperate to be at the finish come tomorrow.
08:06 To be continued...
