00:00 Kyle O'Reilly and PAC both make their AEW returns! We have a new international champion,

00:07 and perhaps one of the most perfect retirement send-offs ever in professional wrestling.

00:12 I'm Luke Owen and this is my review of AEW Revolution 2024.

00:23 The Zero Hour pre-show saw The Bang Bang Scissor Gang beat Team TNA, Private Party and Willie

00:28 Mack in a fine opener - though I am wanting more for J White here - and the team of Willow

00:32 Sky and Chris Statlander beat Sky Blue and Julia Hart. They also announced that PAC will

00:36 be back soon. Fightful Select report that there was a fear within AEW that they wouldn't

00:41 have PAC wrestling again, so this is great news.

00:44 The show kicked off proper with Christian Cage retaining his TNT Championship against

00:48 Daniel Garcia in a very fun match - made even better by this champ and his support WrestleTalk

00:54 support each other sign. Shoutout to you good sir. Everyone give them clapping emojis in

00:59 the comments down below, let us know who you are and we'll shout you out in tomorrow's

01:03 news.

01:04 The numbers game sadly got the better of Garcia despite some assistance from Daddy Magic,

01:08 and Cage hit the Unpretty for the win after more interference by Nick Wayne.

01:11 And to further celebrate the return of TNA we went immediately to the back, as there

01:16 was a cool bit of presentation for the Continental Classic contest between Bryan Danielson and

01:20 Eddie Kingston. Lexi Nair stood near Danielson and gave a story as to why he wants to win

01:25 this match before his entrance, and Renee Paquette did the same for Eddie Kingston.

01:30 It was different and kind of rad.

01:32 And then they had an absolute war. Danielson goaded Eddie into chopping the ring post and

01:38 that allowed him to work over the hand for the rest of the match. Every time Eddie made

01:43 a comeback, Danielson would go back to the hand and take control. At one point Eddie

01:48 hit the backfist but it was with the bad hand and he could not take advantage. Eddie survived

01:53 the knee plus and choke combination that put him out on dynamite and he would not quit,

01:58 using his good hand to just about hit the powerbomb for the win. Danielson, as per the

02:04 stipulation, shook his hand after the match. This was so, so awesome.

02:10 Given that the second half of Sting's final speech got cut from the PPV feed, I could

02:14 have done without the All-Star Scramble match with the benefit of hindsight. The crowd enjoyed

02:18 chanting meat for the Beefy Boys and popped for all the big dives and big moves by the

02:22 lighter lads, but this wasn't necessary. There was a great spot where Hook locked in

02:27 Red Rum on Wardlow and Jericho also got in the walls of Jericho, but it was Wardlow hitting

02:31 Dante Martin with the last ride that got the win.

02:34 Roderick Strock beating Orange Cassidy for the International Championship wasn't too

02:37 much of a surprise, I think most of us figured he was going to win going in, but him winning

02:42 super clean in the middle of the ring really did surprise me. This started off hot and

02:47 remained at that pace, acting as a great showcase for Roddy and his Messiah of the Backbreaker

02:52 gimmick. Cassidy sold his trials and tribulations as champion perfectly, and Roddy got the win

02:57 with the end of heartache. This second title run for Cassidy wasn't as good as the first

03:01 one, but then again, it wasn't the original plan.

03:04 Taven and Bennett celebrated with Roddy after the match, when Kyle O'Reilly slid into

03:09 the ring behind them. This was clearly a big emotional moment for Kyle, who was close to

03:14 tears throughout the segment, and he hugged Roddy but refused the Kingdom shirt. Again,

03:20 hindsight I could have done without that scramble match to give this more time, maybe even give

03:25 Kyle the big music and entrance return. But I'm not going to be mad or upset, because

03:30 Kyle is back. Fightful Select reported that like PAC, there was a genuine fear in AEW

03:36 that O'Reilly wouldn't wrestle again, so it's so great that we get to see him wrestle

03:42 again.

03:43 But before we get into the rest of the review, here's a word from Pete Quinnell ahead of

03:47 this coming Friday.

03:50 It's season four of the Monday Night War, and I have grown tired. See, for three seasons

04:00 now, I've had no challenge. I had Luke for three seasons. Three seasons of playtime.

04:11 And look at him. One, two, three. But now, in season four, I'm being told that things

04:20 are different, things have changed. We have three players now. But I fail to see how anything

04:28 has changed. I have completed the three-Pete. And it doesn't matter who's in this season,

04:37 I will make it the four-Pete. I will add the fourth star to my collection, and I will become

04:45 the guiding light of my GM. I will prove time after time after time after time that I am

04:51 the best player at my GM. And it doesn't matter who is in this season, it doesn't matter what

04:57 happens this season, the fourth Pete will be complete, and I will become the fourth

05:02 star. Season four of the Monday Night War will be just like every other season. And

05:12 there is nothing that anybody can do about it.

05:15 I was a bit distracted during Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli having Road Warrior pads

05:26 for their entrances. Lads, it's Sting who's retiring, not the Road Warriors. And I was

05:31 distracted by this person with another WrestleTalk sign. Let's get some more clapping emojis

05:35 in the comments for this most excellent person. Let us know who you are in the comments and

05:39 we'll shout you out in tomorrow's news. Also I'm sure most of you noticed, but yes,

05:43 I've sort of lost my voice. Oli's still on holiday, he'll be back on Wednesday.

05:46 Black Ball Combat Club took on FTR in another terrific match that was already quite great,

05:51 but jumped into another gear of great when Dax got posted and cut open. The blood added

05:57 a massive dramatic element to the match and led to an incredible final third of back and

06:02 forth action and dramatic near falls. The giant swing and basement dropkick combo, the

06:06 shatter machine, piledrivers, neutralisers on the floor, but it all came down to Black

06:11 Ball Combat Club choking out both Cash and Dax. I had FTR down to win this one, so I'm

06:17 very curious what is next for both teams. There appeared to be a begrudging respect

06:21 shown but no hands shooketh. Spoilers for later on in the broadcast, but Sting and Darby

06:26 Allen retained their titles and announced at the press conference that they will be

06:30 vacating them, with a tournament being used to crown new champs. This match was a good

06:34 showcase for why 2024 should be the year of the AEW Tag Division, and when the Tag Division

06:42 remembers just who the hell it is.

06:45 There was a great fakeout at the start of the Tony Storm and Deonna Purrazzo match as

06:49 Tony's original AEW music hit and someone who looked exactly like Storm came out. And

06:54 it was actually Mariah May playing mind games with Purrazzo who wants to see the old Storm

07:00 back. These two worked very hard to get the crowd into this match, which they eventually

07:04 did, but the great build and character driven narrative didn't quite click in the match.

07:09 Purrazzo tapped out Storm with a Venus De Milo, but Luther distracted Aubrey Edwards.

07:14 May caused more distractions and Storm hit the piledriver for the win. Given that Storm

07:18 got a literal tattoo to build this match, I was expecting more drama. Perhaps this is

07:24 just the first chapter, but in two weeks time we're getting the AEW debut of a certain

07:29 boss who might become the focal point of this women's division.

07:33 Will Ospreay made his proper full time AEW debut by pinning Kanesuke Takeshi in a, frankly,

07:39 phenomenal five star match. Considering they had very little story going in, these two

07:44 really pulled out something special. You could tell this was getting time as well as the

07:48 pair did a very New Japan-esque slow build before kicking into overdrive, including what

07:54 might be the greatest German suplex I've ever seen from Takeshita. The Oscara reversal

07:59 into the Blue Thunder Bomb was mind blowing, the striking exchange was mind melting, and

08:05 the brainbuster in the corner from Takeshita was perhaps literally back breaking. That's

08:10 right, it wasn't a brainbuster into the corner, it was a brainbuster in the corner.

08:16 Ospreay got a nasty ass bruise from that gnarly landing but somehow kept going, including

08:21 a spectacular wheelbarrow German no-sell into the hidden blade for a kickout at one, Will

08:26 hit the Tiger Driver 91 and the hidden blade for the win.

08:29 If I was to give one small criticism of the match, and it is small and it does come with

08:33 the benefit of hindsight, given that Sting is going to do the kickout at one spot in

08:37 the main event and that's part of his gimmick, I wouldn't have done a kickout at one spot

08:42 here. Even though I did leap out of my seat for it.

08:46 The Catalyst family celebrated together after the match with the announcement that Ospreay

08:49 will be facing Kyle Fletcher this Wednesday on Dynamite, Catalyst pitting his family against

08:54 each other once again. This match was simply incredible, and a perfect first match for

09:00 Will Ospreay as part of this AEW roster.

09:03 It meant that the World Championship three-way between Samoa Joe, Hangman Page and Swerve

09:07 Strickland had somewhat of an uphill battle, but the crowd were with them right from the

09:11 off. Joe was part of the second best three-way match I've ever seen - second for obvious

09:16 reasons. And the opening five minutes or so of this match served as a reminder why. He

09:22 is so effortlessly cool, and it's amazing that he looked as cool as he did considering

09:27 Swerve Strickland and Hangman's moustache were also in the ring.

09:31 The two stories of the match were that Joe was constantly having to break up pins to

09:34 save his title, and that Swerve and Page were often so preoccupied with each other that

09:40 they sort of lost sight of the World Title. Swerve could have pinned Joe at one point,

09:45 but decided instead to target Page so he could pin him and win the title, but Page kicked

09:50 out. Page pulled the referee out of the ring to stop Swerve from winning the match and

09:55 beat that ref up, which meant there was no ref there to count the three after he hit

09:59 Joe with a Buckshot Lariat. Swerve threw away the NANA crown so he could win honourably,

10:04 and Page attacked another referee to stop Swerve getting the win for a second time.

10:09 Swerve ran wild and hit the JML driver, but Joe caught him with a half and half and tapped

10:13 out Page with a Coquina Clutch.

10:15 It was a great match with a lot of drama and one really big question coming out of it,

10:21 which the commentators put over hard. Did Page tap out because he needed to, or did

10:26 he do it because it meant that Swerve wouldn't win? It's a question we might not get the

10:31 answer to for a while, as Fightful Select are reporting that Hangman Page will be taking

10:36 some time off after this match, which might be why he attacked two referees - it gives

10:39 him a kayfabe reason to get suspended. And while there is no time frame on his return,

10:44 Fightful Select say he could be gone for a few months.

10:47 There's a lot to talk about with Sting's final match, even just from the entrances.

10:51 Ric Flair came out and he was joined by guest timekeeper for the match, Ricky 'The Dragon'

10:56 Steamboat, as they also showed other legends at ringside ready to watch Sting's final

11:00 match. The Young Bucks came up in the Codyvator, Sting watched a career retrospect video that

11:05 not only got him emotional but made me cry. Then he came out with his sons dressed in

11:09 his surfer and wolf pack gimmicks, and finally Sting came out to Metallica's thundering

11:15 Seek and Destroy. It was perfect.

11:19 And then all hell broke loose. The Stinger sons did Stinger Splashes, they got loads

11:24 of plunder out including sheets of glass - calm down Jack! They brawled through the crowd,

11:29 they went off the stage through tables and then, well, what might be the most insane

11:35 thing I've ever seen, as Darby did a flip dive off a ladder to the floor and crashed

11:42 through glass propped up by chairs. This was jackass levels of holy s*** and a spot that

11:50 I would imagine will be quite divisive.

11:52 For me, it was awesome, spectacular and rather fitting for Sting's final match, but I get

11:59 why some won't like it. With Darby now out of the match it became Sting's greatest

12:04 hit. He beat up both of the Bucks, he no-sold superkicks, he went through a table off a

12:09 ladder, he went through glass himself, he kicked out of a belt shot, he kicked out of

12:13 the EVP trigger at one and he powered up. Darby returned and hit a coffin drop on a

12:18 prone Matthew Jackson, allowing Sting to turn him over into a scorpion deathlock for the

12:23 tap out win. A fantastic, well structured, well paced, just about perfect final match

12:29 one could ask for.

12:31 There's a lot of criticisms you can throw at AEW, but their treatment of Sting and his

12:36 final send off could not be among them. Sting's closing speech capped off what was an exceptional

12:43 PPV, fantastic from top to bottom, filled with drama, great wrestling, captivating storytelling

12:48 and a perfect send off. It might be the best AEW PPV ever. AEW Revolution is 5 out of 5.
