Coach Gene Clemons on Michigan QB JJ McCarthy
Transcript
00:00 Now, Gene, everybody obviously wants to know about the quarterbacks.
00:04 There's been some debate about whether guys like JJ McCarthy helped their stock.
00:08 And I know, you know, not all the quarterbacks worked out and tested.
00:12 And I know that was a disappointment for you, but based on, you know, what you've looked
00:16 at as far as the film on the quarterbacks, those that did test those that did decide
00:21 to throw, did the top of the order change a little bit?
00:26 Because initially, remember, a lot of people went in thinking it was going to be Williams,
00:30 Daniels, and May as the top three and then everybody else, you know, day two.
00:35 Do you think that changed?
00:37 I think it always changes because people are always reaching for quarterbacks.
00:43 In my opinion, there are two guys I would feel comfortable taking in the first round,
00:51 and then everybody else would filter into the second round.
00:55 As much as I like Michael Penix, Michael Penix Jr., and I think that he's a first round talent,
01:02 to me, the medicals probably take you off of him as a first round talent because you
01:08 just want to hedge that bet.
01:10 As far as McCarthy, I've never really, he's not really my kind of guy.
01:18 Like to me, I see Daniel Jones 2.0, like when I see him, I don't see a guy who was going
01:24 to come in and be able to do anything special.
01:28 I look at the way in which he was used.
01:31 I always think it's funny that we assign certain people to say, "Oh, well, he was just a winner."
01:37 We give certain people that he was just a winner pass, and then other people we don't.
01:42 And I think that he is getting the "he just won" pass right now.
01:48 And my entire thing is if he was that dynamic with a head coach who's a quarterback and
01:54 an offensive line that's always one of the best in the nation, then why is it they run
01:59 the ball so much?
02:01 Why is it they take the ball out of his hands in the critical amount, in the critical times,
02:06 and they give it to a running back?
02:07 To me, that says everything I need to know about whether or not he should be placed in
02:12 a position with the ball in his hands.
