00:00 Schools are always wanting to promote school attendance by making their lessons fun and
00:06 interesting, by making sure that their environments are safe and welcoming. And I think every school
00:12 and every headteacher and every teacher would really like to focus on improving attendance
00:17 by offering rewards and incentives and by showing parents and carers and children what a good thing
00:24 it is to be in school every day, rather than focusing on the penalties like fixed penalty
00:30 notices. Because I think schools are really mindful that even issuing that fixed penalty
00:36 notice to a family that may be struggling may be putting additional burden on them. But we
00:41 have a responsibility to the Department for Education and to Ofsted to ensure that our
00:46 attendance rates rise.
