00:00 Parents and teenagers that we talk to both acknowledge that growing up in different generations
00:06 will inevitably lead to them worried about different things in different ways.
00:11 For parents, for example, being quite worried about social media, for them it's a pretty
00:15 new thing.
00:17 They've seen the rise and rise of social media in young people's lives and have no doubt
00:21 seen it tied to some pretty concerning situations, whereas young people have kind of grown up
00:26 with it.
00:27 It's been a part of their everyday lives, so maybe they don't make the same connections
00:31 between some of these concerns and social media.
00:33 So how are people dealing with their worries, Nat?
00:37 Well, interestingly in the report by Reach Out Australia, one of the things teenagers
00:41 actually said was that they go on social media and use online services as a way to de-stress
00:48 or to cope with other things that are concerning them in their lives.
00:51 They might come home from school and go for a bit of a scroll on TikTok or watch a YouTube
00:55 video to de-stress from the day and then go and do their homework, of course.
01:00 But another thing that parents and teenagers both agreed on was that communication was
01:04 key.
01:05 Having parents that are open to talking to their kids and vice versa was actually really
01:09 important and a big emphasis was put on making sure that young people have people to talk
01:14 to.
