Lawmaker welcomes high public rating of armed forces

Lanao Del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong tells The Manila Times on Thursday, March 7, 2024, that the high survey rating of the Armed Forces of the Philippines is a 'welcome development' as this shows the confidence of the Filipinos in their military. He also said that this was a 'morale booster' for the soldiers and an 'effective propaganda tool' against any form of extremist recruitment among the people.

00:00 Good afternoon, congressmen. First, I have two questions. First, the OCTA research survey was released.
00:11 Eight out of ten Filipinos trust and are satisfied with the performance of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
00:20 Any comment? Maybe Zia, you have a comment on the OCTA survey?
00:26 Eight out of ten Filipinos trust and are satisfied with the performance of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
00:35 That's a welcome development.
00:40 Because first of all, it only shows how confident our citizens are in terms of the ability and capability of our troops, security sector to perform in the performance of their mandate.
01:00 So, it would still, I think, and this is going to be the result of that on the part of our security sector.
01:11 It's a moral booster.
01:13 Of course, if you are appreciated, you will really make your job better because it is the mandate of the security sector.
01:23 Second, it would also dispel any, because we are in our case, we have experienced during 2007, that's the first, I guess, the first, it's the first experience that we had
01:42 where the Philippine government had to use all its military assets, water, land, and sea, in order to quell extremism and terrorism in the country for five months.
01:54 Not only the whole country is watching, even the whole world is watching Marawi.
02:02 So, with that support coming from our civilians or the people towards the security sector, that is an effective, it's an effective, because it's involved in the so-called "psycho-army" as they say.
02:20 It is an effective propaganda that would dispossess any reason for other recruiters to continue on operating and convince people to join the ranks.
02:42 Because if there is no support for this kind of element, radicalization, and I'm talking from my own experience, because the whole populace or most of our countrymen are supported by the Armed Forces of the Philippines,
02:59 it's already a victory in terms of winning over the battle, for winning the hearts and the minds of the people.
03:10 So, for me, it's a good development. It only shows how the military, our AFP, our security sector, is addressing the problems on internal security as well as external protection and preservation of our sovereignty and our territory.
03:32 When it comes to other foreign challenges and foreign threats that we are facing right now, specifically in the West Philippine Sea.
03:45 Thank you for coming.
