00:00:00 Figure skating has got to be one of the toughest sports out there.
00:00:05 There's also a lot of focus on you, the individual.
00:00:09 Unlike a team sport, where the focus is on the entire team.
00:00:15 These young athletes, when they get out on the ice, the cameras, the eyes, the focus is all on them.
00:00:21 And they're on the ice by themselves.
00:00:24 So their successes, their failures, are all spotlighted.
00:00:27 So it can be pretty stressful for them.
00:00:31 But also pretty invigorating as well.
00:00:38 We've got our skaters, again, they're getting a five minute warm up.
00:00:43 They don't get to go through the entire program.
00:00:46 They basically get on the ice, they can try some of their elements, as we call them.
00:00:53 It's a great opportunity just to get the muscles relaxed.
00:01:02 Get ready for their competition, their actual competitive skate that's coming up shortly.
00:01:14 And again, for those just tuning in, we are broadcasting live from the Mike Austin Arena
00:01:19 here in beautiful Lewisport, Newfoundland, with the 2024 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games.
00:01:30 And we've got eight skaters on the ice.
00:01:44 And in their warm up, they're always given a one minute...
00:01:55 They're always given a one minute warning, or a one minute notice.
00:01:59 That if they have an element that they definitely want to warm up to,
00:02:04 they've got one minute left to try that.
00:02:15 So again, we've got 16 skaters in this group of Star 5 women, 13 and over, free program.
00:02:24 Eight that are warming up right now.
00:02:27 Once these...
00:02:40 No, not you, Susan Dean.
00:03:00 She's okay to play the skaters music.
00:03:04 She's okay to play the skaters music, isn't she?
00:03:07 Okay.
00:03:08 I'll go on.
00:03:10 Okay.
00:03:16 So again, this is the Star 5 women, 13 and over, free program.

00:28:44 silver in artistic at the Labrador Classic, and silver in artistic in previous provincials.
00:28:51 She's also got silver at the last Labrador divisionals.
00:28:55 Some interesting facts about Mahera.
00:28:57 She started to skate at the age of three and a half and receives Can Skater of the Year at age of seven.
00:29:03 She says that perfectionalism is her blessing and her curse.
00:29:09 She helps out with the Can Skate program, and in her spare time she loves the outdoors.
00:29:15 Skidooing and going on quad and of course time spent at the cabin.
00:29:24 And just going over her program with the coach at the end of our rink there.
00:29:37 And our current standings of course is Suzy Huang is in first,
00:29:41 Kayla Barry second, and Leah Smith in third so far, but got a nice few skaters yet to go.

00:34:15 [Applause]
00:34:19 Awesome.
00:34:22 We've got one more skater in this first half of our group, our flight.
00:34:34 Taking to the ice is going to be Eglia El Haj Musa.
00:34:40 And she's actually representing St. Pierre and Miquelon, local French islands off our south coast.
00:35:03 And Eglia is going to be skating to the music Changing by Sigma.

00:37:21 [Music]
00:37:27 [Music]
00:37:33 [Music]
00:37:39 [Music]
00:37:45 [Music]
00:37:51 [Music]
00:37:57 [Music]
00:38:03 And we have just called on our second half of this group, our second flight of eight skaters for their five minute warmup.
00:38:12 While Eglia waits in our kiss and cry section for her score.
00:38:17 Interesting fact about Eglia is that she took part in the competition in March of 2023 in Chambray, France.
00:38:25 So being from the French islands, she's able to travel to France for competitions.
00:38:30 And she trains a number of hours per week, four on ice and two off ice.
00:38:39 Of course off ice training is a big part of figure skating as well for flexibility and muscle development.
00:38:46 And we've got our eight skaters warming up on the ice for the second half of this Star 5 13 and over program.
00:39:08 As the skaters are skating, they've got to be quite aware of everyone that's around them.
00:39:15 Not sure if Eglia is happy with her score.
00:39:31 But there's a little smile there for sure.
00:39:37 But yes, we've got our eight skaters, they've got to be quite aware of everyone else around them.
00:39:43 So you'll notice that they're always turning their heads, making sure that if they're going to do an element, a jump, a spin, that they're away from the other skaters.
00:39:56 They're pretty used to that because they're usually doing this when they're practicing on their home rinks.
00:40:02 Most of the time they've got a lot of skaters around them as well, so they're quite used to this.
00:40:09 And you'll see them practicing different elements of their program.
00:40:22 Skaters doing spins and jumps, anything to get that little last bit of practice in there while they're waiting for their program to come up.
00:40:32 [Skaters practicing]
00:40:56 And as I mentioned, a lot of these skaters spend a lot of time in off-ice training.
00:41:02 A lot of that involves a lot of stretching.
00:41:06 This is a sport that is all-encompassing.
00:41:10 There's jumps and spins, maneuverabilities that are involved.
00:41:14 Flexibility plays a large role in this.
00:41:18 And a lot of the rinks have ice throughout the winter, but come summer they take their ice up, so it becomes an important time for some off-ice training for a lot of these athletes to keep their skills up-n-up.
00:41:34 So when the season opens again in September or October, that they're able to get back on the ice with little to no problem.
00:41:43 [Skaters practicing]
00:41:51 And you'll see the skaters, while they are warming up, they'll actually go back and converse with their coaches.
00:41:59 Chat about what's going good, what might not be going so good.
00:42:03 Oftentimes this is a time when they'll actually make a decision to either pull something from their program.
00:42:11 Especially with some of the complex jumps and spins.
00:42:14 [Skaters practicing]
00:42:17 One minute remaining.
00:42:19 A lot of times if they don't feel that they are feeling it today, they may actually pull a part of their, some element from their program.
00:42:31 They often feel it's better to pull the element, if they're not feeling good about it, then to continue on with it.
00:42:38 Not to complete it in the fashion that they want.
00:42:42 So you'll often see them conversing with their coaches at the end of our rink, just to get some feedback.
00:42:49 And their coaches are of course observing.
00:42:53 Seeing what's going good, what's not going so good.
00:42:56 [Skaters practicing]
00:43:24 So you'll see all the skaters leave except for the one that's up next, which is our Gracie Hadley Roberts.
00:43:30 Gracie is representing Eastern Region.
00:43:32 [Skaters practicing]
00:43:37 Wait at the end of the rink for their name to be called.
00:43:40 [Skaters practicing]
00:43:52 And Gracie is going to be skating to the theme music, Swan Lake.
00:43:57 [Skaters practicing]
00:44:04 [Skaters practicing]
00:44:23 [Skaters practicing]
00:44:25 [Skaters practicing]
00:44:52 [Skaters practicing]
00:45:14 [Skaters practicing]
00:45:43 [Skaters practicing]
00:46:11 [Skaters practicing]
00:46:25 And that was Gracie Hadley Roberts.
00:46:28 She skates with the Silver Wings Skating Club in Eastern.
00:46:32 Her home club coach is Sue Ann Johnson and Patricia Maloney.
00:46:37 [Skaters practicing]
00:46:42 Some past successes for Gracie is that she has won gold two times in the star four category.
00:46:49 [Skaters practicing]
00:46:52 So she's moved up this year, obviously she's competing in the star five, 13 and over.
00:46:56 Some interesting facts about Gracie is she's a CAN skate coach in training.
00:47:01 And she coaches four hours per week as part of Silver Wings Skating Club's CAN skate coaching team.
00:47:09 She's also on the Discovery Collegiate's cheerleading team.
00:47:13 [Skaters practicing]
00:47:22 And again ladies and gentlemen this is the second part of our star five, 13 and over women's program.
00:47:30 [Skaters practicing]
00:47:53 A lot of the athletes know if they've had a good or a bad skate when they get into the kiss and cry section.
00:47:59 Our next skater from our sensitive digital section, please welcome to the ice, Danielle Keeping.
00:48:05 [Skaters practicing]
00:48:10 And this is Danielle Keeping and she's going to be skating to the music, Sign of the Times.
00:48:15 [Skates practicing]
00:48:35 [Skates practicing]
00:49:02 [Skates practicing]
00:49:23 [Skates practicing]
00:49:52 [Skates practicing]
00:50:07 [Skates practicing]
00:50:17 [Skates practicing]
00:50:23 [Skates practicing]
00:50:28 [Skates practicing]
00:50:35 Danielle's home club is the Port of Basque Figure Skating Club.
00:50:41 Danielle trains for about five and a half hours a week.
00:50:46 Some past successes for Danielle is in January 2023 she was the gold medalist in the Western Divisional star four over 13 category.
00:50:55 She also won the Joan Target Award during the competition.
00:50:59 And she went on to the Provincials and earned a silver medal in February of 2023.
00:51:04 Her synchronized skating team won a bronze medal at the Elizabeth Swan Memorial Skate in January 2024.
00:51:11 And they skate at the Provincials in March.
00:51:16 Danielle looks forward to summer and softball season and hopes to see the Toronto Blue Jays game this summer.
00:51:23 So hopefully she does.
00:51:25 [Skates practicing]
00:51:29 Some high fives from some teammates there.
00:51:31 Always great to see the camaraderie between the teammates even though they're competing there.
00:51:36 They're all in the frame of mind that they've got to support each other.
00:51:41 [Skates practicing]
00:51:50 Just waiting on the score now for Danielle.
00:51:53 As the judges compile their scores of each of the elements of the program.
00:51:58 [Skates practicing]
00:52:17 Just anxiously waiting for those scores to come out.
00:52:20 [Skates practicing]
00:52:36 It's not all about placing first or second.
00:52:38 It's oftentimes getting personal bests at these sorts of competitions.
00:52:42 [Skates practicing]
00:53:00 And this is Alexandra Ford and she's going to be skating to the music of Aladdin.

00:56:24 In the 15th.
00:56:25 [Skates practicing]
00:56:35 I think that's a personal best for Alexandra.
00:56:37 [Skates practicing]
00:56:46 Again it's nice to walk away with medals from competitions but you see progress and you're increasing your personal best.
00:56:52 That's a huge achievement.
00:56:54 [Skates practicing]
00:57:00 And our next skater is also representing Saint Pierre Miquelon.

00:59:33 And Kiera is her home club coach is Alana Vossen.
00:59:41 Her home club of course is the club de patinage de Surglas over on the islands.
00:59:48 She trains for about four hours a week on ice and again two hours off ice.
00:59:54 In 2020 she took part in the regional competition in Marseille France and in 2022 in Chambray France as well.
01:00:05 So traveling in France, competing and also competing here in our Newfoundland and Labrador winter games.
01:00:18 So they're getting lots of international experience as well. That's fantastic.
01:00:22 Just discussing with her coach what she taught of her program, what went well, what didn't go so well.
01:00:31 Waiting for her score.
01:00:37 [Skates practicing]
01:00:54 Score was 16.78 which ranks her fifth so far.

01:04:12 So lots of busyness going on there.
01:04:17 And she still gets time to put in about four hours of training for figure skating per week as well.
01:04:32 So excellent job.
01:04:40 Waiting with the coach.
01:04:43 Just waiting for the scores for Isabelle to come out.
01:04:48 And of course the judges are looking at the different components of her program from her spins and her jumps and grading each one, her transition between those elements.
01:05:00 Everything right down to ice coverage.
01:05:03 All these things contribute to the overall score.
01:05:16 How much of an element got completed before a fall.
01:05:24 Oftentimes the athletes will get a feeling though of how their skate went.
01:05:42 I think she's pleased with her score on that.
01:05:45 I think that's a personal best for her.
01:05:48 She did an awesome job.
01:05:55 Our next skater is going to be Sophia Breton.
01:06:04 Sophia is going to be skating to the music of Turning Page.

01:09:00 And she's been assisting with the pre-can and the can skate program at that club for a number of years as well.
01:09:10 Fantastic.
01:09:12 She placed second at the Western Classics in 2024.
01:09:15 That was held a little earlier this year.
01:09:18 And she's also placed second at the Agnes Thistle Invitational back in 2023.
01:09:36 [ Background noise ]
01:09:48 High five from the coach.

01:12:44 And her home club is the Mount Pearl Parade Skating Club.
01:12:48 Home club coaches are Miranda Walsh and Megan White and team.
01:12:55 Some interesting facts about Alexa is besides single skating, Alexa skates at also a synchronized skater
01:13:03 and has been skating synchro since the age of seven.
01:13:07 She plays volleyball and is a member of her school's grade eight volleyball team.
01:13:12 And she's an animal lover and she has two Shih Tzu dogs whom she adores.
01:13:19 Hopefully they're watching today.
01:13:26 Alexa has won gold medal at the 2024 Eastern Figure Skating Classics,
01:13:31 a gold medal at the 2024 Skate Newfoundland Provincial Championships.

01:13:54 That's awesome.
01:13:55 Good for her.

01:16:41 Ladies and gentlemen, Ava Griffiths.
01:16:45 Great job by Ava.
01:16:50 And Ava's home club is the Polaris Figure Skating Club.
01:16:53 And our home club coaches are Alice Petal and Jennifer Thomas.
01:16:59 Jennifer Thomas.
01:17:01 Some past successes is Ava has won the 2023 Alice and Cyler Dobbin Award
01:17:08 for the highest technical points.
01:17:15 And Ava also says she loves to read.
01:17:20 And again, she's representing the Labrador region.
01:17:24 And she was the last skater in our star five 13 and over women.
01:17:39 Just waiting on the scores for Ava as she puts back on her warmup jacket.
01:17:46 It's nice and warm when you're out skating, but once you come off the ice,
01:17:49 it's a little bit chilly when you get warmed up as quickly as possible.
01:17:54 [ Music ]
01:18:01 [ Music ]
01:18:14 The scores for Ava Griffiths.
01:18:19 She has earned 15.30 points, which puts her in 13th place.
01:18:26 [ Music ]
01:18:35 The unofficial results for star five women for 13 and over free program.
01:18:42 In first place, Alexa Bishop.
01:18:45 In second place, Susie Hung.
01:18:49 In third place, Colleen Jackson.
01:18:53 In fourth place, Kayla Berry.
01:18:56 In fifth place, Agla Elhaj Musa.
01:19:00 In sixth place, Cara Lefiole.
01:19:04 In seventh place, Sophia Bretton.
01:19:08 In eighth place, Leah Smith.
01:19:11 In ninth place, Byron McGrath.

01:19:23 In 13th place, Ava Griffiths.
01:19:30 In 15th place, Danielle Keating.
01:19:33 And in 16th place, Colleen Quilty.
01:19:38 And those were the results for our star five women 13 and over.
01:19:44 Warming up on the ice right now, we have our two gentlemen representing the star six men.
01:19:51 This is the combined intermediate men free program.
01:19:56 We've got Dylan Reed and James Ries.
01:20:01 Dylan represents the Trinity Percenture Figure Skating Club and James represents the Mount Pearl Paradise Skating Club.
01:20:10 It's great to see some males taking part in the sport.
01:20:26 The males themselves, because the sport involves a lot of power, they can get some really good height on their jumps.
01:20:40 Figure skating itself versus hockey, it certainly takes a lot of skill to get out there on the ice.
01:20:47 In hockey, you don't normally be doing jumps and spins.
01:20:55 Figure skating encompasses all those sorts of elements.
01:21:04 They often say it's easy for a figure skater to become a hockey player,
01:21:11 but not so easy for a hockey player to become a figure skater.
01:21:26 The only difference really in the skates, the equipment themselves,
01:21:32 is the figure skates will actually have a jagged edge at the front of their blade, often referred to as a toe pick.
01:21:42 The figure skaters will use that to start a jump.
01:22:07 And again, the skaters, when they're warming up, they'll go back and converse with their coaches quite often.
01:22:24 And these guys are getting a six minute warm up. They've got one minute remaining, I believe, in their warm up.
01:22:31 And again, it's a great opportunity to get out, warm up the muscles.
01:22:37 An opportunity to practice some elements of their program.
01:22:49 And again, it's an opportunity sometimes to make some last minute adjustments to the program.
01:22:57 They'll base that on how they're feeling for the day, what the ice conditions are like.
01:23:02 A number of different variables come into play.
01:23:05 And they'll actually talk with their coach and decide how they want to go forward.
01:23:21 We've got Dylan, who's going to be the first of the two skaters who's going to be taking the ice.
01:23:29 Your warm up is now over.
01:23:31 When all skaters please remain in the ice.
01:23:33 Your warm up is now over.
01:23:40 This is the star six men's combined intermediate men's free program.
01:23:47 And our first competitor represents the Avalon Nation.
01:23:52 Please welcome to the ice, Dylan Reed.
01:23:56 This is Dylan Reed and he's going to be skating to the music "I Hear a Symphony" by Cody Fry.
01:24:03 I used to hear a simple song that was until you came along.
01:24:16 God's play something new.
01:24:21 I hear it when I look at you.
01:24:26 I hear it when I look at you.
01:24:34 I hear it when I look at you.
01:24:44 I hear it when I look at you.
01:24:54 I hear it when I look at you.
01:25:04 This little town on the water.
01:25:10 Perfection is so near.
01:25:16 You are beautiful by far.
01:25:22 I want to be near.
01:25:26 I want to be near.
01:25:28 I want to be near.
01:25:48 I want to be near.
01:25:58 I want to be near.
01:26:08 I want to be near.
01:26:18 I want to be near.
01:26:28 I want to be near.
01:26:48 Ladies and gentlemen, Dylan Reed.
01:26:58 Great job by Dylan.
01:27:02 I would think he's happy with that for sure.
01:27:07 And Dylan's home club is the Trinity Passentia Figure Skating Club and his home club coach is Dana Smith.
01:27:17 Dylan has earned gold in Provincials and Atlantics 2023 for the Star 5 program.
01:27:24 Of course this is the Star 6 program he's competing in now.
01:27:28 And Dylan was a member of the Trinity Passentia Minor Hockey Association from age 4 to 12 and then switched to figure skating.
01:27:36 He rapidly passed each level from Can Skate to Star 3 in the first year and then Star 3 to 6 in his 2022-23 season.
01:27:46 So Dylan has progressed on very rapidly and very nicely.
01:27:54 He trains about 5 hours a week so it certainly shows.
01:28:03 Just waiting for the scores for Dylan here at the moment.
01:28:09 His personal best score for this program in the past was 19.44.
01:28:24 19.1 on this skate today.
01:28:28 Not quite his personal best but still got to be happy with that.
01:28:32 Our next skater is James Reese.
01:28:39 And James represents the Mount Pearl Southern Shore Skating Club.
01:28:51 And James is going to be skating to the music of Kashmir by Led Zeppelin.
01:29:04 [Music]

01:31:00 [Music]
01:31:12 James just conversing with his coach there. He took a couple of hard falls there for sure.
01:31:28 Sometimes after those falls you just got to take a minute.
01:31:37 Just goes to show how much these young athletes put into this.
01:31:47 They just go out there and they give it their all.
01:32:08 He's just chatting with his coaches. Not sure if he's going to finish off the program.
01:32:17 Because of the jumps he didn't get to finish the programs and a lot of times in competitions they will let him pick up from where he left off.
01:32:28 We're going to see if that's going to be the case in this situation.
01:32:52 James just approaching the judging desk.
01:33:02 Looks like he's going to pick up where he left off.
01:33:17 He's just cheering him on.
01:33:27 Let's get his music queued up again.
01:33:37 [Music]
01:33:47 [Music]
01:34:07 [Music]
01:34:17 [Applause]
01:34:22 Ladies and gentlemen, James Reese.
01:34:27 That certainly deserves a round of applause for sure for James.
01:34:32 The resilience of these skaters to hit obstacles but get back out there again is just amazing.
01:34:42 It's going to be a little bit disappointing for James, no doubt.
01:34:46 Certainly he probably didn't have the skate that he wanted to have.
01:34:55 But again, just goes to show he got out there and gave it everything he had. Sometimes it works out for you, sometimes it doesn't unfortunately.
01:35:08 In competitions like this it all comes down to the moment you're on the ice.
01:35:14 You're having a bad day, things don't go right, unfortunately that's what you get judged on.
01:35:23 One bad skate does not make a bad skater.
01:35:31 And these athletes who have been at this a while, they've developed a resilience for this sort of thing.
01:35:40 As disappointing as it can be at times.
01:35:45 That's why they've got their coaches who support them.
01:35:55 Just waiting on the score for James again, just two skaters in this star six men group.
01:36:16 That's going to take us up, I believe they're going to do a resurfacing of the ice.
01:36:29 It's actually not a bad score.
01:36:58 So that takes us up, we're going to have a flood of the ice, a resurfacing of the ice, and it's actually going to be a lunch break.
01:37:05 So an opportunity for some of the judges and staff members to grab some lunch.
01:37:11 There's actually going to be a medal presentation, so for this morning's competitions, they're going to have the medal presentations taking place for those individuals.
01:37:23 And we are going to resume again at 1225, so after the break we're going to be into the star six women.
01:37:34 There's going to be 15 skaters in that group.
01:37:38 And the star eight women after that, and we've got a full day of competition.
01:37:44 So I think we're running up until about six o'clock this evening with competitions, and again if you're just tuning in,
01:37:50 we're live from the Mike Austin Arena here in Lewisport with the Newfoundland Labrador 2024 Winter Games.
01:37:59 This is figure skating that's taking place here in Lewisport.
