11:42 Shana Marie represents the Silver Blade Skating Club.
11:47 And her coaches are Lisa Young and April Barron.
11:52 Shana Marie has qualified for the 2022 Skate Canada Challenge
11:56 and the 2018 Newfoundland Winter Games.
11:58 She was awarded the Polaris Artistic Cup
12:01 at the 2022 Sectional Championships
12:04 and the Blesch Artistic Cup
12:11 at the 2023 Provincial Championships.
12:14 - Interesting fact, according to Shana Marie,
12:17 the only reason I started skating is because
12:19 my parents missed a deadline to register me for downhill skiing.
12:25 Looks like she's stuck with it and she's doing quite well with it in spite of it.
12:30 And again, ladies and gentlemen, this is the Novice Women's Free Program.
12:39 And we're broadcasting live here from the Mike Austin Arena
12:42 in beautiful Lewisport, Newfoundland.
12:44 As part of the 2024 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games.
12:48 This is the final category of our competition today and of these games.
12:54 We've got five skaters in this category.
12:57 Shana Marie Stutless of the Silver Blade Skating Club
13:00 was the first up and we're just waiting for the results of her program.
13:09 And in the Novice Women's Program,
13:12 this is a three and a half minute program.
13:15 Maximum of seven jump elements, maximum of three spins
13:19 and a maximum of one step sequence.
13:22 And the competitors, the athletes get judged
13:27 on all the different components of their program.
13:30 And for instance, numerous spins, some spins have to have ten revolutions,
13:37 others six revolutions.
13:39 And all these things are taken into account by our judging panel.
13:47 To come up with a final score.
13:52 The score is for Shana Marie Stutless.
13:54 She has earned 59.84 points.
13:59 Awesome.
14:00 And is currently in first place.
14:05 That is a personal best on this program for Shana Marie.
14:10 Our next skater waiting to get called to the ice is Jasmine Whedon.

18:36 Jasmine represents the CBS Skating Club
18:39 And her coaches are Kathryn Penton
18:43 And Haley Dalton of the CBS Skating Club
18:45 And Colin Chansky of the Prince of Wales Skating Club
18:48 Jasmine is 13 years old
18:50 And already has a long list of past skating successes
18:53 This season she earned a silver medal at both the Skate Newfoundland Sectional
18:57 And Provincial Championships
18:59 Gold at Eastern Classics
19:01 Bronze at Agnes Thistle Invitational
19:03 And at Summer Skate she earned bronze for her short program
19:06 And silver for her free skate
19:08 She's representing Team Avalon in the 2024 Newfoundland-Labrador Winter Games
19:12 Here today
19:13 She was the 2023 Pre-Novice Women's Atlantic Canadian Champion last season
19:17 She is a member of the Skate Newfoundland-Labrador Challenge Team
19:20 And represented Newfoundland-Labrador at the Skate Canada Challenge National
19:24 Figure skating competition in 2023 in Regina, Saskatchewan
19:28 And again just recently in Oakville, Ontario
19:31 She also represented Newfoundland
19:33 And placed top ten in the 2023 Canada Winter Games in PEI
19:39 She was also the recipient of the E.C. Ted Winters Memorial Award
19:42 At the 2023 Skate Newfoundland-Labrador Provincial Championships
19:47 For the most outstanding performance of that event
19:50 She has had many other podium successes as well
19:53 Since she began to skate competitively at just 8 years old
19:56 With the winning of both Sectional and Provisional Championships that year
20:00 In Pre-Juvenile Women under 11 category
20:03 Being the highlight
20:05 The score for Jasmine Wink
20:08 Is a record 69.76 points
20:10 Which puts her currently in first place
20:14 Awesome score, a new personal best for Jasmine
20:17 And Jasmine also drives an hour each way five days a week for skating practice

24:43 Again, after these skates, these skaters just spill over with emotion
24:49 Some of it sadness, some of it just pure happiness

25:00 And again, Rachel represents the Mount Pearl Paradise Skating Club
25:07 And her coaches are Neil Thorne and Laurie Brett
25:10 Rachel represented Skate Newfoundland four times at the national level in Edmonton, Regina and Oakville
25:15 During the Skate Canada Challenge competitions
25:19 Rachel was highlighted in 2023 representing Newfoundland and Labrador at the Canada Winter Games in PEI
25:24 She is a three-time pre-novice provincial and sectional champion
25:27 And is this year's novice sectional and provincial champion
25:31 Rachel has been lucky enough to work with Olympic level figure skaters including
25:36 Caitlin Osmond, Kristen Moore-Towers, Michael Marano and Patrick Chan
25:41 Rachel is a member of her high school cheerleading team at Mobile Central High School
25:46 She has competed with the team at nationals in Niagara Falls, placing third
25:49 She enjoys coaching young figure skaters, reading and baking and spending time with her friends and family
25:56 Again, just a well-rounded young athlete
26:00 Spending a lot of time training, but still has time for lots of other things in life as well
26:08 Her personal best score for this program Skater Today has been 68.06 points
26:15 And we're just waiting the results from the judges on today's program
26:22 And again, this is the novice women's free program
26:26 Rachel was skater number three out of five
26:32 We've got skater number four, Madison Abbott-Billard, just warming up on the ice
26:41 Gave Rachel a big hug as she came onto the ice, both of them members of the Mount Pearl Paradise Skating Club
26:47 It's just fantastic to see these skaters just giving it all and doing the best that they can
27:09 Rachel spends about ten hours of ice training and two hours of off-ice training
27:13 At Attain Physio and Sport Performance Center each week
27:18 Again, lots of these athletes are just putting in a lot of time each week to perfect their sport
27:25 Get as best as they can to progress in the skill levels that these sports require at this level
27:33 The programs in this novice women's free program, they're running about three and a half minutes each
27:39 And they've got a number of jump elements and spins that they've, uh, have to complete
27:46 And that's what they get judged on, they get a score for each of those elements
27:53 Each of the jumps, each of the spins, and they're just giving it their all
28:00 Each of the jumps, each of the spins, the step sequences that they're completing
28:05 And it takes some time for the judges to get these scores together
28:10 Again, many times having to go into video replays of some of the elements
28:16 Just making sure that the number of revolutions have been completed
28:21 Especially in the spins, I personally don't know how they do it

34:59 Madison loves figure skating, she's been skating since she was 4 years old
35:03 And she's not skating herself, oh when she's not skating herself
35:08 You can usually find her on the ice coaching skaters from pre-can to junior
35:14 She'll graduate from high school in June of this year and then plans to begin working towards a career in the medical field, fantastic
35:21 Her personal best score for this program was 58.75
35:29 Just waiting for the scores of today's program
35:33 So Madison did take a couple of tumbles there so hopefully everything's ok
35:40 Again some of these tumbles
35:44 They land them hard on the ice
35:50 Everything looks to be ok
35:56 And again there's just a lot that goes into these programs, they're 3 and a half minutes long
36:01 There's a number of elements that have to be performed
36:05 Jumps, spins, step sequences
36:08 And there's a lot of practice time that goes into these programs
36:21 But again there's also a lot of variables of things that can throw off these athletes as well
36:27 And we've got one skater remaining in this category of novice women
36:42 Claire Farrell, also from the Mount Pearl Paradise Skating Club is just on the ice now
36:49 And the next score is, there was a correction to Jasmine Wheaton's score
36:53 She earned 61, sorry, correction 71.95 points
36:59 Which at the time of her escape put her in first place
37:04 We've just got some corrections being
37:16 Rachel Tuff, she earned 71.16 points which puts her currently in second place
37:23 Alright so just some corrections being made on the scoring there
37:38 They were aware that they were having some technical difficulties
