Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast: Antonio Pierce, the state of the franchise, looking ahead to the NFL Draft
Transcript
00:00 Everybody, welcome back to the Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast.
00:08 I am your host, Uncle Hondo, the Las Vegas Raiders beat writer with my assistant beat
00:12 writer and friend, the one and only, the best, Ezekiel Trezevant.
00:18 Zeke, how you doing, brother?
00:20 I'm doing well, man.
00:21 How about yourself?
00:22 Good.
00:23 Now, before we kick into this, I had a lot of people ask.
00:26 I had, all right, you disappeared for a second.
00:30 All right, you're back.
00:31 I had Aiden Champion, Carter Landis, and Braden Reedy with me in Indianapolis, and somebody
00:38 asked, people were asking, "Why isn't Zeke there?
00:41 Is he in trouble?"
00:42 I said, "No, he's not in trouble.
00:45 Was his decision not to come.
00:46 I offered to take him.
00:47 Would you not tell them that so I can get the hounds off my rear?"
00:51 Yeah, man.
00:52 You guys have to let Hondo live.
00:55 Hondo invited me months ago.
00:57 I just had to stay back in Vegas and take care of some things.
00:59 But yeah, it's all good, all love, but definitely, that was originally the plan was for me to
01:04 be in Indy.
01:06 Some things just came up.
01:07 That's it.
01:08 All right, because I'm just telling you, people were, the Zeke Minion Army was asking me,
01:13 "Man, why isn't Zeke there?"
01:14 I said, "Zeke here."
01:16 All right, good deal.
01:17 All right, so we had to delay this taping five minutes because I was on the phone.
01:23 And I want to talk to you about it because there is a prospect here at the Combine, who
01:34 it's over now, but who I know very well.
01:37 Okay, I've known him many, many, many years.
01:43 So he interviews with the Raiders.
01:48 And he calls me.
01:50 And he says to me, "You got him in?"
01:53 I said, "Yeah."
01:54 And he goes, "I want to tell you something.
01:56 You've told me how awesome you enjoy covering the Raiders."
01:59 I said, "Yeah."
02:00 He goes, "They are incredible."
02:03 I said, "You got to tell me about this."
02:07 He said, "My entire interview with them, we didn't really talk football.
02:13 They wanted to get to know me as a man."
02:18 He goes, "It was a great conversation.
02:20 It was like sitting on a bar stool with three guys drinking a beer and just, they wanted
02:26 to get to know me the person."
02:28 He said, "They're like, 'We know what you can do.
02:30 We watched your tape.
02:32 You've had multiple coaches.'"
02:38 And that really floored me because you don't hear that a lot.
02:41 And that's a lot of the Telesco approach.
02:44 He told me earlier in the week, last week, he's just, "We know what these guys can do.
02:48 I don't need to sit there and watch them on a 40.
02:50 I can put the film in and watch it for myself if it's a guy we're interested in.
02:54 I get a list of everybody's times.
02:56 I know their three cone."
02:58 To me, that was some great insight into Telesco and how he's going to do this.
03:04 I'd love to hear what you think.
03:08 From what I understand in terms of Tom Telesco and how he does things, I feel like he's a,
03:13 in terms of watching the film, you know how there's gym rats?
03:16 I feel like Tom is a film rat in the sense of he's going to watch film and film and film
03:21 and film and film.
03:23 And I feel like he trusts his gut and he trusts his own experience and history and judgment
03:28 to the point where, like you said, the other things that they measure at the combine don't
03:31 really matter to him as much as his eye test in terms of watching the film and seeing what
03:36 there is that the player does well.
03:37 So that sounds like Tom Telesco.
03:39 I feel like that fits his personality in terms of just wanting to know how the guy operates.
03:43 And I think you can learn a lot more about a player when you ask them questions outside
03:48 of their everyday norm of football, right?
03:51 So ask them questions that have nothing to do with the game.
03:53 And I think that's going to, that puts all the pieces together for a guy like Telesco.
03:57 He watches the film, he breaks that down, and then he combines that with, "Hey, this
04:01 guy actually has a great conversation.
04:02 He's an intellectual guy when we talk to him," et cetera.
04:06 All right, so Zeke, here's another thing that really intrigued me, is the Raiders were on
04:14 the lips of everybody at the combine.
04:17 Fans, prospects, I can't tell you the number of prospects without us even asking, brought
04:24 up what AP was doing, Dan Campbell, D'Amico Rons, those guys got talked about a lot as
04:29 well.
04:30 But I mean, talking about Telesco, talking about AP, it is nice, and you are a Raider
04:37 fan, I'm not, but it's got to be nice for you as a Raider fan and a guy that covers
04:42 a team that your team's now being talked about and it's not being, "Oh, Raiders."
04:50 It's being talked about.
04:51 Put some respect on that.
04:53 Yeah, 100%.
04:54 I mean, first of all, starting point is this, it's still the Raiders, no matter what.
05:00 With them being the Raiders, they're always going to be talked about because they're just
05:02 one of those top five, six organizations in the league, they're always going to be talked
05:05 about.
05:06 But you're right, it does, as we would say, as the kids would say, it hits a little different
05:10 when everything that's coming out or a lot of the things that are coming out are more
05:13 positive and it's not a negative tone or a negative connotation about the Raiders, they're
05:17 coaching this or the players that or this quarterback or this receiver.
05:21 It's good when it's positive.
05:23 And like you said, to have people who don't necessarily have a whole lot to do with the
05:26 organization still be talking about the Raiders in a positive light, that's huge.
05:30 I mean, it's in the Dejando, we're invested in this too, right?
05:35 Whether we're fans or not, we invest time, we invest time away from the family, especially
05:39 during the season, we're invested in this too.
05:41 So as much as we're not necessarily tied to the team like that, we are to a certain degree
05:46 and we want to hear positive things about those guys as well.
05:48 So it definitely feels good.
05:50 All right, Zeke, I'm going to kind of switch gears a little bit here.
05:56 I think it's going to be very, very difficult for the Raiders to get up to the top three
06:01 to get Jaden Daniels.
06:05 But as you know, weeks ago, I gave out my first mock and had JJ McCarthy going first
06:14 pick of the second round of the Raiders.
06:17 And I put in there that an executive told me they have him rated much higher, but if
06:22 the draft were the day that I wrote the mock, you could get him there.
06:25 But his team does not need a quarterback.
06:29 But the guys who I speak to from teams that are good quarterback drafters, all of them
06:35 had JJ as one or two on their board.
06:39 He has flown up the boards.
06:43 He killed it in interviews, killed it in workouts.
06:46 He is the real deal.
06:48 So I'm going to ask you right now, because it looks like Chicago is pretty locked in
06:54 that they're going to want Caleb.
06:56 I'm hearing that the commanders like Caleb first, Jaden second, then Drake May third.
07:04 I think that the Patriots would love to get Caleb, I mean, would love to get Jaden, but
07:17 they would also be very happy with Drake.
07:20 So it looks like there's going to be, nobody's going to move up into the top three.
07:25 So if you're the Raiders, what would you do if you're Tom Telesco?
07:29 Are you trying to move to four or five?
07:32 To get a JJ?
07:33 Are you going to stay at 13?
07:35 I want to know, take me inside the Trezevant, vast, narrow ways of mind control.
07:45 What are you doing with this pick?
07:46 Listen, man, I know a lot of people probably don't want to hear it, but I'm all with them
07:51 staying at 13.
07:53 Now, obviously, trading up is going to be an option.
07:56 But like you said, trading up to three, even really top five, probably my opinion, I think
08:01 that would be mortgaging way too much for the Raiders.
08:04 They're way too close to make that kind of a move.
08:06 Could they potentially, in my opinion, move up to 10, eight, nine, 10, possibly, but I
08:10 don't think there's a need for that.
08:12 I think if they stay at 13 and listen, cornerback, linebacker, maybe an offensive line.
08:19 And I honestly think it's probably in that order, unless you want to switch a cornerback
08:23 and a linebacker.
08:24 You can switch those two at 13 and get you a stud and help turn that defense, not turn
08:29 the defense around, but improve the defense even more.
08:31 The defense is already good.
08:33 So imagine if you plug in the right cornerback, that's a locked down cornerback, or plug in
08:37 the right linebacker with the outlaw in Spillane.
08:40 They're going to take the next step.
08:41 They're right there.
08:42 So if you ask, I'm nerding outright.
08:45 I'm getting excited even thinking about them adding somebody at those positions.
08:48 So I think at 13, stay there, don't mortgage the future, add to your defense, and then
08:53 use free agency to kind of plug in the other holes in the team.
08:56 So I'm going to tell you at the combine, they paid interest to several positions, but the
09:02 positions that got the most attention of the Raiders and meeting with the top prospects,
09:08 so was quarterback, offensive line, defensive line.
09:14 They met with those guys.
09:16 They were all over them.
09:18 I don't, and corner, excuse me.
09:22 So quarterback, corner, offensive and defensive line.
09:26 I don't think there's any chance.
09:28 Now they could, but if they stay at 13, it's a quarterback, offensive, defensive line,
09:36 or corner.
09:38 How excited would you be if they picked up a Latham or the young man from Oregon State?
09:44 And I apologize, but with a name like Hondo that you heard a lot of people butcher, I'm
09:49 not going to butcher his name, but that kid impressed them a lot.
09:52 Terry and Arnold, even though he ran a 4-5, I think he'll get down at 4-4 at the Alabama
09:56 Pro Day.
09:57 Or a J.C. Latham, which I already mentioned.
10:02 Or Leilatu Lactu.
10:07 I think I said that correct.
10:09 That's a defensive end they may have to move up a little bit for, but there are so many
10:13 options.
10:14 And listen, I had a GM tell me, we could have as many as seven quarterbacks go in the first
10:21 round.
10:22 We could have two in the first round.
10:23 Great.
10:24 He said, because teams are going to overreach.
10:25 It's going to keep pushing great players down.
10:28 And he said this to me, Zeke.
10:31 He said, I asked him, what would you do?
10:33 He said, I'm staying at 13.
10:35 He said, because there's going to be some people move up who are going to make some
10:37 really bad picks.
10:39 And there's going to be a lot.
10:40 He said, then I'm going to hope at 13, there's a bunch of picks there.
10:44 And I can trade down to 20, 21, 22, 23, pick up an extra second rounder and come out with
10:51 two stars.
10:52 Your thoughts, Zeke?
10:53 The Raiders have, I don't want to say ultimate flexibility, but they have a lot of flexibility
10:58 in terms of what they can do.
11:01 Whether it's trading back and they have flexibility in terms of who they can drive, what position
11:04 they can drive.
11:05 It's there for them.
11:07 Honestly, I wouldn't be opposed to them trading back.
11:10 Like you said, trade back a couple of picks, even them going from 13th to 15th or 17th,
11:15 they could pick up an extra pick or two.
11:17 And I believe Telesco would hit on those picks if you were able to get those extra picks
11:21 and fill extra holes on that team.
11:23 So I think that's what the Raiders should do.
11:24 I think, and I know it's not the sexy pick and that's why I keep smiling like this.
11:28 I know it's not the exciting thing to do necessarily, but you got to think about the long-term future
11:32 of the team and of the organization.
11:34 I think they should just stay pat.
11:36 And then like you said, at that point, they can pick corner, defensive line, offensive
11:40 line, they have flexibility there.
11:41 So I think that's the route they should take.
11:44 All right.
11:45 So Zeke, for you, what stood out and you weren't at the combine.
11:49 So you were looking at it macroly, we were looking at it microly.
11:54 What stood out for you from the combine?
11:56 Yeah, in terms of the combine, it was just a matter of watching how everybody, like the
12:01 one thing I watched the most at a combine is how everyone interacts around each other.
12:04 The players interact around each other.
12:06 In terms of specific players, nothing really jumped off the screen to me in terms of the
12:11 combine itself.
12:12 But I do like to see how the players react, like I say, when something doesn't go right
12:15 for them and they're standing around, you know, the people that they're competing against
12:18 for a good draft position.
12:20 So definitely noticed that in terms of the combine.
12:23 And it was interesting to see.
12:25 All right.
12:26 Now, I am at people always say that when I look down, I'm ignoring you.
12:30 I'm not ignoring any of your answers.
12:32 I'm actually looking at a piece of information for my next question.
12:35 So here is what I have for you.
12:39 Michael Lombardi comes out, make some strong comments about AP.
12:50 And I'm double checking something here.
12:52 So give me one second, because this is important for our conversation.
12:57 But I'm just curious, what were your thoughts?
13:00 Now, he worked for the Raiders from 98 to 2006.
13:06 What were your thoughts on this?
13:10 Sherlomb?
13:11 Barty's come now.
13:12 He was or he's been a Raider.
13:13 His kids were fired as Raiders.
13:17 Just curious what you think.
13:23 So when I read the comments, if it felt personal, it felt, you know, and why it felt personal,
13:31 I didn't quite, you know, dig too deep into it.
13:34 But it felt so personal that I kind of just disregarded the comment.
13:39 As you know, a lot of people say a lot of different things.
13:41 And that was really the only true negative that I feel like I've heard, you know, in
13:45 terms of comments being thrown at AP from other people, really this whole offseason
13:49 so far.
13:50 So honestly, for me, I just kind of blew it off, you know, but when you kind of go back
13:54 and look at it, you definitely have to pick it apart a little bit, like why go out on
13:57 the limb and make those comments, you know, about AP.
14:02 It seemed like there was much more to it than just the comments.
14:05 And I'll leave it at that.
14:08 It was funny, wasn't it?
14:10 Very much so.
14:11 I mean, here's the guy that's been critical of the Raiders, and then his kids get hired
14:16 and he shuts up, which I get that.
14:18 I'm not going to fault him for that.
14:20 But then as soon as his kids get canned, back he goes.
14:26 To me, it just.
14:27 Yeah, well, I already made my comment, so I'll just leave it there.
14:32 I just wanted to get it.
14:33 All right.
14:34 I was told something by several different NFL coaches, executives that I wanted to run
14:40 by you because I thought it was very germane.
14:43 And they talked about one guy said to me, I loved AP's comments.
14:50 This is a paraphrase, but it's close to a quote.
14:53 I loved AP's comments.
14:57 About the one thing about me, it's not going to change is me.
15:00 He is not going to be handled.
15:03 He does whatever he wants.
15:05 That PR department ain't going to handle him.
15:08 He's going to do what he wants when he wants.
15:11 And then you heard Telesco when he was at, you know, hey, AP's been more vocal than you.
15:17 He goes, yeah, it kind of works out good because I'm not really that way.
15:21 But I had so many coaches tell me they respected him.
15:25 He's not doing it normal.
15:28 But he's going to do it his way.
15:29 He said, I know I was hired to be fired, but he talked about, I'm going to do it my way
15:35 because when it's over, I'm still going to be true to me.
15:38 And I had so many coaches say, one guy even said to me, I don't even know AP.
15:44 Never met him.
15:45 Respecting him as a player, but I don't know him.
15:48 He said, and I already love the guy because he's like, if I'm going to go down, I'm going
15:52 to go down guns a blazing being me.
15:57 How much do you love that part of Antonio Pierce?
16:00 Listen, I'm a huge, you know, I'm a huge supporter of that chain of thought.
16:05 Right.
16:06 And when you think about the situation AP was originally put in as interim, he was hired
16:10 to be fired and it wasn't necessarily just particular to AP.
16:13 That's just kind of how it goes when you're the interim.
16:15 That's just the situation.
16:16 But like you said, right, if you can finally get that opportunity you've been waiting on
16:20 and you know, you don't have everything in your favor, you're going against a lot of
16:24 odds that are going against you, why not do it your way?
16:27 And then I would also say this, I think it's fitting, right?
16:29 I think, you know, if we look historically, the Raiders as an organization have always
16:33 done things their way.
16:35 Like to me, it fits well with AP, right?
16:38 So on that aspect, it makes sense.
16:40 And then again, Hey, if you're going to put yourself out there, right.
16:43 In terms of being the head coach, all the blame is falling on you.
16:46 Why be anybody else but yourself?
16:48 Why be something that you're not right.
16:49 And like you said, at the end of the day, or like AP said, at the end of the day, when
16:52 this is all over, you don't want to look back and say, Oh man, I wasn't even myself or all
16:56 I tried to be somebody that was different.
16:57 And then I still didn't make it.
16:59 That's the, that's the worst feeling to have.
17:01 At least be yourself, do what you do, stay comfortable in your skin and let the chips
17:05 fall where they're made.
17:06 And you know, I love that about AP personally.
17:08 I do too.
17:10 It's refreshing, isn't it?
17:12 Very much so.
17:13 Yeah, a hundred percent.
17:14 All right.
17:15 So here we go.
17:16 Now, this is a big one.
17:18 I'm putting you in the GM chair.
17:22 You are Tom Telesco, Zeke Trezevant.
17:25 And you said you would stay at 13.
17:27 So you're at 13.
17:28 Who are you picking in the 2024 NFL draft when you send your slip up for the first time,
17:36 who are you picking?
17:38 I think it's going to be, it's Kool-Aid, right?
17:41 The quarterback from Alabama.
17:43 Even though he was found to have a Liz Frank fracture?
17:46 Oh, so my apologies.
17:47 I didn't know that.
17:48 But honestly, I think I would still take a chance on him.
17:50 Honestly, I would.
17:51 I think what his upside could do for, yes, I know.
17:55 I know.
17:56 Because it's 13.
17:57 And I look at it like this.
17:58 If you put him on that defense with everyone else and still build that defense out, I think
18:03 it's a good fit.
18:04 Jerry and Arnold, I could see that.
18:08 His counterpart, but not with a Liz Frank.
18:11 Look at Zeke Trezevant.
18:12 He's pulling an AP.
18:14 He's either hitting a home run and getting an extension or he's getting canned in two
18:19 years.
18:20 No in between.
18:21 No other way to roll, right?
18:26 Now, next week when you're on the show, I want you to hold up your new Air Force Ones
18:30 I got you.
18:31 Oh, let's go.
18:32 Yes, sir.
18:33 100%.
18:34 Thank you again.
18:35 You're going to hold them up.
18:36 You're welcome.
18:37 But you're going to hold them up.
18:38 I want you to show them off.
18:39 I want Raider Nation to see.
18:40 This is how Zeke's going to roll every day when he comes into the building.
18:44 You got it.
18:45 I'm looking forward to it.
18:46 Thank you again.
18:47 Thank you in all seriousness.
18:48 Thank you for that.
18:49 I appreciate it.
18:50 Oh, no, man.
18:51 Let's talk about AP's interview at the combine.
18:57 I love the way he answers questions.
19:00 You never wonder what he thinks.
19:03 He'll say, "I don't want to talk about that."
19:05 Okay.
19:06 That's better than lying to me or talking 20 minutes and saying nothing.
19:11 Nothing.
19:12 He will take most of the questions and he will answer most of the questions.
19:18 When you look at the NFL as a whole, when you look at what the Raiders had with Josh
19:23 McDaniels and John Gruden, I don't even know the words to describe other than I would say
19:34 refreshing is AP's approach to football.
19:39 What do you think?
19:42 Refreshing is definitely the first word I would use.
19:46 It gets me excited.
19:47 I'm speaking just from what we do every day.
19:51 Our job is to report what comes from the coaches, what comes from the players in terms of their
19:54 words and what's going on.
19:57 When AP came in, I can just speak in terms of how much easier specifically my job became
20:02 once AP came in because like you said, you can ask him that question and he's not going
20:06 to pull your leg.
20:07 He's not going to BS you.
20:08 He's going to let you know what it is that you need to know.
20:11 When somebody can give you the information that you need, makes it fun for you to come
20:15 into work every day, that just translates throughout the whole entire organization.
20:20 As refreshing as it was for you and I and other people in the media, imagine how the
20:24 other people in the organization felt, in the front office felt that AP's there and
20:28 how you kind of turn things around.
20:30 I think refreshing is definitely the word to use, man, but there's so many other words
20:34 that you can probably throw out there to explain what AP in terms of his honesty and just his
20:38 transparency, what that does for you.
20:41 It makes it feel like you can have a genuine conversation with him.
20:45 That's a huge thing.
20:46 I didn't really, personally, I never really got that vibe from McDaniels, not to knock
20:49 him by any means, but it just felt like, hey, if I asked McDaniels a question, it's almost
20:53 like he was going down a list of answers and that was just what the answer was going to
20:58 be and you had to deal with it.
20:59 It's completely different with AP.
21:00 You ask him a question, he's going to let you know what it is you need to know.
21:03 Makes your job a lot easier.
21:04 Makes you want to come into work.
21:05 It makes you look forward to the next day of, hey, what's going to happen today?
21:08 So I love it.
21:09 I like it.
21:10 And it makes it exciting.
21:12 I asked Tom Telesco a question at the combine and it got a lot of play nationally.
21:19 I said, since you finally are here, what has surprised you?
21:24 I took a lot of criticism for that, which blew me away because that means what is something
21:31 good that maybe you didn't see from the outside that now that you're here, wow.
21:35 And he talked about 17 to 25 guys.
21:37 And by the way, I had a couple of players tell me it's more than that, who are there
21:41 every day, working out, working hard.
21:46 And he talked about that really, really impressed him.
21:50 I wanted to get your, as soon as he said it, I thought, boy, I wonder what Zeke's going
21:53 to think of that.
21:54 What did you think of his answer about?
21:56 Because I think that's really cool.
21:57 And then AP expounded on it.
22:00 Talking about really shows you it's family now.
22:02 It's tight.
22:03 What'd you think about that answer?
22:04 What's that tell you about your Raiders?
22:06 Yeah, so I think it tells us that is that the Raiders, they, the players themselves
22:11 realize how close they were last year and how close they are in terms of playoff contention.
22:16 I mean, to be specific, I think they deep down, they know, I think they realize, hey,
22:21 we were only a game.
22:22 If you want to be, if you want to go a little bit extra, maybe two games away from the playoffs,
22:26 right?
22:27 The ball bounce a different way, a couple of games, those guys are in the playoffs.
22:29 And I think deep down, they know that.
22:32 With that said, this is the time that you make up that one to two game differences in
22:36 the offseason.
22:37 By the time the season starts, you are what you basically are what you are, right?
22:40 In terms of physical, physical health, conditioning, et cetera.
22:42 I think those guys know this is the time to put in the work.
22:45 And that's why they're in there like that.
22:48 Talk about exciting, right?
22:49 I think those guys were kind of, I don't want to say looking forward to the offseason to
22:51 kind of heal and get better, et cetera.
22:54 But I think they were excited for the opportunity to regroup, right?
22:57 Get that time off, get their body right, get their mind right.
22:59 And they're taking advantage of the time off.
23:01 So I'm expecting big things come next season.
23:03 All right, last question.
23:07 It's a big one.
23:09 You talked about you would pick Kool-Aid.
23:13 But I'm going to ask you to tell us, who do you think Tom Tolesco is going to pick?
23:20 I don't know.
23:25 I can't even kind of shoot the dark on this one, man.
23:28 I'm sorry.
23:29 I don't have an answer.
23:30 I don't have an answer.
23:31 But this is what I'll tell you, though.
23:33 I'm confident that whatever Tolesco does, I think it's going to be a great, I think
23:37 it's going to be a good move for the team.
23:39 And I think he's going to think long term.
23:41 I think probably defense again.
23:44 I feel like he's going defense.
23:45 What position, what player, I just don't know.
23:47 I think that's the beauty of having Tolesco in there is that you don't really know what
23:50 he's going to do, especially with him being here for the first year.
23:53 You don't really know what he's going to do.
23:54 But we'll see, Hondo.
23:55 I have no idea, man.
23:57 No clue.
23:59 You rock.
24:00 I appreciate you.
24:01 Next time you're on, you're going to show off your Air Force Ones.
24:04 But this is Zeke Trezevant, the best assistant B writer in the world.
24:08 My guy, my buddy, my friend.
24:11 Terrific job.
24:12 Now, Zeke, for people that want to know, what is your X handle?
24:16 Yes, sir.
24:17 It's E as in elephant, Z.
24:19 So like easy, Trezevant.
24:21 So easy.
24:22 And then my last name, T-R-E-Z-E.
24:23 V as in Victor, A as in Apple, N as in Nancy, T as in Tom.
24:28 He is a wonderful guy.
24:30 If you ever met his wife, you would think he should be a coach because she is way out
24:34 of his league, just like me.
24:35 I like that.
24:36 Him and I are in the same club when it comes to that.
24:40 He's a great guy.
