Biden strikes out at China in State of the Union speech

US President Joe Biden had tough words for China at the State of the Union on Thursday (March 7).

He criticised their economic practices and said he has ensured that US technology could not be used in Chinese weapons, before saying he wanted competition, not conflict with China.

Biden used the speech to distinguish himself from former President Donald Trump during his last State of the Union speech before the two men face off in the November US election.

00:02 The working people who built this country.
00:04 For years, I've heard many of my Republican
00:09 and Democratic friends say that China is on the rise
00:14 and America is falling behind. They've got it backwards.
00:19 I've been saying it for over four years,
00:22 even when I wasn't President. America is rising.
00:25 We have the best economy in the world.
00:28 And since I've come to office, our GDP is up,
00:30 our trade deficit with China is down to the lowest point
00:33 in over a decade.
00:35 And we're standing up against China's unfair economic
00:37 practices. We're standing up for peace and stability
00:41 across the Taiwan Straits.
00:43 I've revitalized our partnership and alliance
00:46 in the Pacific --
00:48 India, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Pacific Islands.
00:54 I've made sure that the most advanced American technology
00:58 can't be used in China, not allowing to trade them there.
01:02 Frankly, for all this tough talk on China,
01:06 it never occurred to my predecessor to do any of that.
01:09 (Applause.)
01:10 I want competition with China, not conflict.
01:13 And we're in a stronger position to win the conflict
01:16 of the 21st century against China
01:18 than anyone else for that matter, than any time as well.
01:23 Thank you.
01:25 (Applause.)
