Melbourne woman shot dead by police after stabbing mother
Victoria Police have shot dead a woman in Melbourne after she repeatedly stabbed her mother despite officers' attempts to stop her. Both women died at the scene.

00:00 Victoria Police have just given a fuller picture of what they're describing as a tragic incident
00:06 for the community, the victims and first responders that unfolded in Melbourne's outer north east
00:11 last night.
00:12 Officers say they were called to a property in the suburb of Montmercy at about half past
00:16 six following reports that were later proven to be false that a daughter was attempting
00:21 to set her mother alight.
00:22 Now when they arrived at the property they said they found the 26 year old daughter repeatedly
00:27 stabbing the mother who was aged in her early 50s.
00:31 Police say they urged or tried to compel the daughter to stop stabbing her mother but she
00:36 resisted those commands and according to Victoria Police they had no other choice but to discharge
00:41 their firearms with one of the two officers who attended shooting the woman fatally.
00:46 So she died as did the mother who later succumbs to her injuries at the scene.
00:50 Now Victoria Police held a press conference.
00:52 They were unable to say how many shots were fired, at what range or where the bullets
00:57 hit.
00:58 They nonetheless say they have full confidence in the actions of the officers who responded
01:01 to this job.
01:02 I know from attending the scene last night they were confronted with a terrible dilemma
01:08 and they've acted absolutely appropriately within their training and within the guidelines
01:13 and for that they have my fullest support along with the broader organisation.
01:17 Now the two officers that responded to this job are male officers with between four and
01:22 six years experience.
01:24 They've both taken some time off work after handling what was described as a very hectic
01:28 and very difficult and no doubt confronting situation.
01:32 Victoria Police says they're both being supported.
01:34 An investigation has also been launched in order to discover some of the things that
01:38 we don't know about what unfolded last night.
01:41 That's being carried out with oversight from Victoria Police's Internal Conduct and Ethics
01:45 Command.
