00:14 The Dark Knight, the Academy Awards have given us many such historic and remarkable moments.
00:21 Today we will be talking about some such incredible moments witnessed at the Oscars
00:26 in history and some interesting facts about the Academy Awards. Let us go back a little in time
00:32 and look at the history of the Academy Awards which today are considered the most prestigious
00:38 in the field of entertainment and is a dream of every actor, director and performer there is.
00:43 As remarkable as these awards are, its history is also incredible. The Academy of Motion Picture
00:53 Arts and Science was founded in 1927. Soon afterwards a dinner was hosted in the crystal
01:00 ballroom of the Blythmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The main motive of this meeting was to
01:06 discuss the new organization's aims and goals. While there were numerous points that were
01:12 discussed that night, one of the prime objectives that were talked about was to provide a way for
01:19 recognizing the excellent achievements in the field of motion picture production. In one of
01:25 these meetings it was the MGM art director Cedric Gibbons who drew an image of a knight holding a
01:31 sword and standing tall in front of a film's reel. The design was discussed and many variants were
01:37 created from which Gibbons chose one. The completed design simplified the knight's shape and relocated
01:45 the film reel beneath its feet. This was how the now iconic figurine was created. There is also a
01:52 very interesting history behind how the Oscars got their name. The most popular explanation and
01:58 one given by AMPS officials is one that goes back to 1931. The story goes that when an Academy Awards
02:06 librarian named Margaret Herrick first saw the golden figure, she exclaimed that the blank face
02:12 and stern eyebrow reminded her of her uncle Oscar and hence the name. She later went on to become
02:19 AMPS director. Though it was founded in 1927, the presentation was first started in 1929 and
02:27 winners since then received this gold-plated statute, the Oscar. The first Oscar ceremony
02:34 comprised 12 categories apart from two special honors. The awards were meant to honor people
02:39 responsible for cinematic achievements in 1927 and 1928. There was a very little element of
02:46 surprise at the first Oscar Awards ceremony as the names of the winners had been declared three
02:53 months in advance. The first Oscar for the best actor was backed by German tragedian Emil Jannings
02:59 for The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh. The actor had to return to Europe before the ceremony
03:06 so he requested the Academy to give him the award early. His request was accepted,
03:11 making his statute the very first Academy Award to be ever presented. It was in 1966 that the
03:17 Academy Awards ceremony broadcast took place in color for the very first time. This allowed the
03:23 viewers at home to experience the dazzling allure of the event. After that, there was no looking
03:29 back and the popularity of the award ceremony reached insurmountable heights. Today, Oscars
03:35 are telecasted internationally, reaching movie fans in over 200 countries. Since 2002, the awards
03:42 have been broadcast from the Kodak Theater, mesmerizing the locals as well as the international
03:48 audience. In all these years, the audience have witnessed some remarkable moments which has made
03:54 the Academy Awards even more special. The first momentous moment was when actress Hattie McDaniel
04:01 won the award for the best supporting actress for her role as Mammy in The Gone With The Wind 1939.
04:07 The moment marked the first win by a black woman after more than a decade since the start of the
04:12 Oscars. However, McDaniel wasn't allowed to sit with the rest of the film's cast and was seated
04:19 at the back of the venue. There have been six ties in Oscars history and the one that got the
04:24 most buzz came in 1969 when Barbara Sreesand and Katharine Hepburn both won the best actress award.
04:32 Sreesand for The Funny Girl and Hepburn for The Lion in Winter. The bulk of iconic silent film
04:39 star Charlie Chaplin's career occurred before the Oscars began, but his impact on the industry was
04:45 incomparable. To recognize that, the Academy gave him an honorary award in 1972 and when he did
04:51 receive it, he was given a standing ovation that lasted a whopping 12 minutes, making it one of the
04:58 best Oscar moments ever. In 1992, legendary Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray was bestowed with an honorary
05:17 Academy Award, becoming the first Indian to receive the honor. Rasool Pukutty and A. R. Rahman later
05:23 went on to win the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing and Best Original Score, respectively,
05:28 for the 2008 British film Slumdog Millionaire. Then came 2009, which saw one of the most emotional
05:35 moments at the Academy Awards in history. There was barely a dry eye in the house when Heath
05:40 Ledger, who died in January 2008, won an Oscar posthumously for his chilling performance as
05:46 Batman villain The Joker in The Dark Knight 2008, which earned rave reviews when it was released
05:53 the summer following his death. His mother, father and sister accepted the award on his behalf. Apart
05:59 from what we have just discussed, there are also several rather little-known facts about the Oscars.
06:05 Can you believe that this highly coveted award is just worth $1? That is the value of Oscars
06:12 technically. Oscar winners don't really own their statutes. Upon being presented with the trophy,
06:18 winners must sign an agreement stating that if they wish to sell their statutes, they must first
06:24 offer them to the Academy for $1. If they refuse, they cannot keep their trophy. The trophy weighs
06:30 as much as a newborn baby. Each of the statues weigh 8.5 pounds and are 13.5 inches tall. It
06:37 takes 10 days to make one Oscar and a total of three months to make all 50. Earlier, a Chicago-based
06:44 company, R.S. Owens & Company, manufactured the statues from 1982 until 2016. Now, they are made
06:51 about an hour and a half outside of New York City at Polytelex. These awards have also been a victim
06:57 of theft. In 2000, the Oscar statues were stolen out of their delivery truck. The statues were
07:04 later found in the garbage by a junk dealer. Ever since then, the Academy keeps an extra set of the
07:09 statues that is locked safely in a vault just in case. Walt Disney has the most Oscar wins of all
07:16 times. In all, he has won 22 competitive Oscars and three honorary ones out of a total of 59
07:24 nominations. He was nominated for one Oscar every year between 1942 and 1963. Meryl Streep has been
07:32 nominated for a record 21 Academy Awards, winning three Best Actress Oscars. Jack Nicholson is the
07:39 most nominated male actor so far, having received 12 Oscar nominations. Dinah Keaton is the sole
07:46 actor to be nominated for exactly one award over four consecutive decades. She won for 1977's Annie
07:53 Hall and lost for 1981's Ritz. 15 years later, she received her third nomination for Marvin's Room,
07:59 1996, and her last in 2003's Something's Gotta Give. No film has ever won the quartet of acting
08:07 Oscars, which are the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.
08:13 The Oscars red carpet dates back to 1961, the year of the 33rd Academy Awards. It was the first time
08:20 the ceremony was televised, with ABC broadcasting it and Bob Hope hosting it. This was all you
08:27 needed to know about the Academy Awards, famously known as the Oscars, its history, and some
08:33 fascinating facts. We hope that you liked this video. Thank you for watching. Subscribe to 1India
