00:00 A family's grief laid bare. Their home in Greenvale, now the centre of a major murder
00:07 investigation. John Peter LaTorre was shot dead around 4.30 this morning in his driveway.
00:15 The victim is known to police and Homicide Squad isn't ruling out links to organised
00:19 crime including the Calabrian Mafia.
00:22 It's hard to say whether or not there's any gang links associated to it but that obviously
00:26 formed part of our investigation.
00:28 The 64-year-old was a well-known fruit and vegetable wholesaler. It's a family business.
00:33 Today they're grieving his loss. Detectives say Mr LaTorre was walking out of his garage,
00:39 possibly on the way to work, when he was shot.
00:42 I believe a family member heard what occurred outside and found the deceased in the driveway.
00:49 One was treated for shock. Their neighbours left reeling.
00:53 The family's quiet street has been closed off for most of the day. Even residents were
00:58 kept out until about lunchtime as detectives, forensics and uniformed officers try to piece
01:05 together exactly what happened and who's responsible.
01:10 Whilst stopping further violence.
01:13 If there is links to organised crime, there's always a potential of retaliation and that's
01:17 where Victoria Police approach such investigations as a high priority.
01:23 They have ruled out links to Melbourne's tobacco shop, Arson Spree. Police are still investigating
01:28 how many offenders are involved in this case as tensions escalate.
