00:00 The 49ers just signed defensive end Yator Grossmatos to a two-year, $18 million deal.
00:07 This news comes a couple hours after the 49ers signed defensive end Leonard Floyd to a two-year,
00:12 $20 million deal.
00:14 So instead of signing one defensive end, they signed two to complement each other.
00:19 Leonard Floyd will be the pass rusher and Yator Grossmatos will be the run defender,
00:25 the edge setter.
00:26 He played the first four seasons of his career with the Panthers, who probably thought they
00:30 were getting a pass rusher when they drafted him high, but he's not.
00:33 He's not much of a pass rusher.
00:34 He had four and a half sacks career high.
00:37 That was last season, but he's a very good run defender.
00:41 He's 6'5", 265 pounds, which is a lot bigger than Leonard Floyd, who's 6'3", 240.
00:50 So I could see where the Niners are coming from here, as opposed to going out and spending
00:54 a ton of money on Khalil Mack or Daniil Hunter.
00:58 They got a couple guys who can play together or complement each other, not play together,
01:03 but one after another, keep each other fresh.
01:07 I like it.
01:08 I mean, I haven't watched a ton of Yator Grossmatos play.
01:14 He was on the Carolina Panthers.
01:15 I think it was probably bad for your health to watch the Panthers the last couple of years,
01:21 but I don't know, maybe Steve Wilks gave him a vote of confidence.
01:25 Maybe as Steve Wilks was getting fired, he said, "You know what, guys?
01:28 I want you guys to get better, so you should go sign Yator Grossmatos for the next defensive
01:35 coordinator."
01:36 I think it's possible.
01:37 Anyway, I like the signing.
01:39 I'm not big into giving huge contracts to defensive linemen who are just going to get
01:44 held in the Super Bowl, and there's not going to be flag call.
01:46 I mean, that's the point.
01:49 And you could argue this signing's almost maybe more important than the Floyd signing
01:55 because the Niners issue is stopping the run, much more than rushing the quarterback, although
02:00 frankly as a unit last year, this defensive line was good at neither.
02:05 But now they should be better at both because they have Leonard Floyd and Yator Grossmatos,
02:13 whom I'm an expert in.
