00:00 PBS Kids opens worlds of possibilities for all children, thanks to PBS stations and viewers like you.
00:06 [music]
00:08 We're here in Eastern North America, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean,
00:14 at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, aboard the research vessel Atlantis.
00:20 It's us, the Krand brothers.
00:22 I'm Martin. I'm Chris.
00:24 And here at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, some really important work is being done.
00:29 You see, we humans know quite a bit about creatures of the African savanna.
00:35 And we know a lot about the animals of the temperate forests.
00:40 [music]
00:43 We even know pretty much about the creatures of the rainforests.
00:46 [music]
00:49 And a whole lot about the coral reefs.
00:52 [music]
00:55 But there's one habitat's creatures that humans know very little about.
01:00 Almost nothing, really.
01:02 And that habitat is called the deep sea.
01:05 Part of the reason is because it's really hard to get to.
01:08 We're just not built for it.
01:10 So, just like space travel, we need an awesome, state-of-the-art deep sea vessel like this one.
01:16 This is Alvin.
01:18 Alvin can travel to the deepest parts of the sea.
01:22 It's like another planet filled with darkness, hot black smokers, and volcanic action.
01:28 And when you do get down there and shed light on this mysterious deep sea creature world,
01:34 scientists are discovering life forms that we never even knew existed.
01:39 Animals that can do amazing things and that have strange and incredible creature powers.
01:46 Imagine if we could discover the strange creatures and creature powers of the deep sea.
01:54 What if?
01:56 [music]
02:01 [music]
02:03 On adventure with the coolest creatures, from the oceans to the trees.
02:07 The brothers crack outgoing places you never get to see.
02:12 Hanging with their creature friends, get ready, it's the hour.
02:16 We're gonna save some animals today with creature powers.
02:21 [music]
02:30 To the speed that lizards glide, shark and flies, and lions ride.
02:34 [music]
02:47 Creatures of the deep sea.
02:56 That's 50 feet, Martin. A pretty good dive.
02:59 For a human.
03:01 But for a sea creature like you, it's like baby stuff.
03:05 [music]
03:12 Well, good one, bro.
03:14 But my ears were hurting. The pressure down there is crazy.
03:18 You made it pretty deep, safe to about here.
03:22 But the ocean's about three miles deep, so you'd need to dive at least 40 skyscrapers more to get to the bottom.
03:29 Are you kidding? That's impossible.
03:32 For us, maybe. But not for sea creatures.
03:35 Yeah, you need some serious creature powers to get down there.
03:40 Hermanos, it's ready. Come on.
03:43 It's time.
03:45 Oh, this is it.
03:47 Get ready for an epic journey.
03:50 A voyage to a new frontier. A place where people have hardly ever gone before.
03:57 Mysterious and full of undiscovered creatures.
04:01 We're in. Lay it on us.
04:04 Yeah, maybe I'll pass on this one.
04:07 Okay, we've had problems reaching the deep sea before, right?
04:11 The Amphisub couldn't handle the water pressure in the whale and squid adventure.
04:15 That was close.
04:17 And our adventure was cut short because of power problems in the yeti crab adventure.
04:21 Almost didn't get out of that one.
04:23 Well, we've solved all that.
04:26 Cokie and I have used all that we've learned and have come up with something that we think can get us to the deepest depths of the ocean.
04:34 And stay there for a while.
04:36 Oh, boy. It's a dream come true.
04:38 Let's see it. Show us.
04:40 We've been waiting for this moment.
04:42 I haven't.
04:44 Okay, so now we present to you the latest in deep sea technology.
04:51 A vessel that will take us where no human has gone before.
04:56 Ta-da!
04:58 Wow!
05:00 Do you know what this means?
05:02 Finally, we just might be able to discover a new species.
05:06 Maybe two or three.
05:08 With new creature powers that no one ever knew even existed.
05:12 It's one of our lifetime dreams.
05:16 I'll be monitoring our depth and charting the unknown territory for science.
05:20 I can't wait to see how our new invention holds up on her maiden voyage.
05:24 I'll have to find a name for her, too.
05:26 And I'll stay up here and wish you guys luck.
05:31 Sorry, Jimmy. You're driving.
05:33 We need everybody on this adventure and you're a valuable part of the team.
05:37 Aw, why do I have to be so loved?
05:40 You're a top-notch pilot.
05:42 I just hope we make it back alive.
05:45 So, is everybody ready to go?
05:47 To the deep sea!
05:50 Woo-hoo!
05:52 Ha! No one will have seen me out here.
06:02 Now, let's try this thing out.
06:04 I don't know why I didn't think of this before.
06:07 If the deep sea has so many undiscovered creatures,
06:10 I need to be the first one to lay claim to it.
06:15 Look!
06:17 This pharmatech industry sub will get me there before anybody else.
06:23 Well, it better anyway.
06:27 I had to give Zack a certificate for a lifetime supply of deep sea cuisine for it.
06:35 But the rest of those creatures are all mine.
06:42 Now, on to my own personal deep sea cupboard.
06:47 Okay, we're passing the 650-foot mark,
07:06 entering the twilight zone,
07:08 where only faint amounts of sunlight can reach down,
07:11 and the pressure would crush a person into a human pancake.
07:15 Love pancakes, but not human pancakes.
07:19 Why, that's weird.
07:22 Ah! An alien fish!
07:24 New species?
07:26 A barreleye!
07:28 Not a new species, but only recently discovered.
07:32 It has a see-through head.
07:35 Exactly. Just like an alien.
07:38 Why does it have that?
07:40 Hey, let's get out there.
07:42 We gotta see what that head is all about.
07:45 Okay. Thanks to my new technology, I think I can get you out there.
07:49 Great! What technology?
07:52 Deep sea fish have a special kind of fat in their cells
07:56 that miraculously keeps them from getting crushed.
07:59 I developed a similar technology for this ship,
08:02 and I also updated the amphisub.
08:05 You can use that for exploratory missions.
08:09 Yeah!
08:11 All right! Wahoo!
08:17 Ready to deploy!
08:19 This docking port has miniaturizing capability.
08:25 Miniaturize!
08:27 Hello, barreleye.
08:31 Is he looking at us?
08:33 I don't know. What are those green cylinders all about?
08:38 Whoa!
08:39 They're eyes! Now he's looking at us!
08:43 He can look straight up through the top of his head,
08:46 or straight to the front.
08:48 Weird. And cool.
08:50 Oh, yeah. And those black things are actually his nostrils.
08:54 For smelling.
08:56 So crazy eyes. What's up?
08:58 Why are you always looking up?
09:01 He looks up into the light.
09:03 Jellyfish!
09:06 Whoa!
09:08 Oh, wow!
09:12 The jellyfish caught some little copepods in his tentacles.
09:15 And now our barreleye is darting in and stealing the little snacks.
09:21 Some of the weirdest swivel eyes in nature.
09:24 But they weren't for this guy.
09:26 Let's swivel, barreleye style!
09:29 Whoa! Swivel up, swivel back.
09:32 Back. Back!
09:34 A little less swivel, barreleye.
09:36 Up and back.
09:38 Ah!
09:40 Goblin shark!
09:42 Easy, sharky. We're out of here.
09:48 Did you see those jaws?
09:50 They shot right out of his mouth.
09:53 Where'd he go?
09:55 He could be anywhere.
09:57 He acted like an ambush hunter, hunting by surprise.
10:01 Surprise!
10:03 I don't like these kinds of surprises.
10:06 I can't get a tracking on them.
10:08 The GPS transmitting module is not responding.
10:11 Uh-oh. How are we going to find them?
10:14 I don't know. We're in the midnight zone now.
10:17 3,000 to 13,000 feet.
10:19 Or around the length of 20 skyscrapers down.
10:22 No sunlight at all reaches this far down.
10:25 This is what they mean by the deep, dark sea.
10:29 Oh, no.
10:31 He's sucking us in.
10:34 Whoa!
10:36 Whoa!
10:38 Guess he didn't like the taste.
10:41 Uh-oh. Not again.
10:43 I got a scan of the jaws. Check it out.
10:46 The jaws have ligaments like rubber bands.
10:49 When his jaws are closed, they're all stretched out.
10:52 But when he releases them, his jaws catapult outward in milliseconds.
10:57 It was great to know how he captured us.
10:59 Now it'd be really nice to know if he's going to eat us.
11:03 Whoa!
11:06 Not this time!
11:09 Now we know goblin sharks don't like to eat amphisubs.
11:12 Lucky for us, they prefer fish.
11:17 Where are you guys? What's wrong with your GPS modulator?
11:21 Funny story. It kind of got crushed by a goblin shark.
11:25 Goblin shark?
11:27 We'll never see the warm, dry sun again.
11:30 No problem. We'll shine a beacon light. See you soon.
11:34 Okay. Look for their light.
11:37 Uh-oh. There are lights everywhere down here.
11:41 It's like outer space with stars all around.
11:45 Yes, of course.
11:47 Lots of creatures down here have built-in natural light.
11:50 Remember that anglerfish we bumped into one time?
11:53 Right. So if you head to a light in the deep sea,
11:57 you never know what creature you're going to get.
12:00 How are we going to pick one?
12:03 Eenie, meenie, miney, mite.
12:06 Pick a light and hope it's right.
12:08 If it isn't, what will it be?
12:10 Brand new species or monster of the sea?
12:13 Ha! That's the Tortuga.
12:15 Okay. That light it is. Let's go.
12:20 (Ticking)
12:22 I have a good feeling about this, Chris.
12:27 Me too, Martin.
12:29 Hey, it's coming into view.
12:31 The Tortuga?
12:33 Um, I think we picked the wrong light.
12:36 Hmm. Now what if we hear?
12:46 Bet nobody has ever cooked you before.
12:49 Come here, tasty little morsel.
12:52 Hey! What?
12:55 You got me.
12:59 Now I got you.
13:03 And we'll see how you taste.
13:06 Now get back here, weird little fishy.
13:09 (Chuckling)
13:11 I hope Chris and Martin can see our light
13:14 and not all the other light-producing fish around.
13:17 Okay, but I thought light bulbs made light, not fish.
13:21 It's bioluminescence.
13:23 Some sea creatures can make two different chemicals
13:26 inside a special body part called a photophore.
13:28 And when they mix them together, they make a glowing light.
13:31 It's kind of like a glow stick.
13:33 Two chemicals inside, and when mixed, it glows.
13:37 Why do so many sea fish have it?
13:40 Chibi, quick, shine the light there.
13:44 Go closer.
13:46 Okay, so I know those zooplankton glow to find each other
13:52 and stick together in the deep sea.
13:54 That's one reason for bioluminescence-- communication.
13:57 And the deep-sea shrimp knows they do that,
14:00 so they're attracted to lights hoping to get a meal.
14:03 But bigger predators know that little predators,
14:06 like the shrimp, do this.
14:08 So another use of bioluminescence-- hunting.
14:11 This anglerfish has a built-in fishing pole.
14:14 Wow, he really fooled that shrimp.
14:17 And there's a third use of bioluminescence-- defense.
14:22 Wow, there are so many uses for bioluminescence.
14:28 It's only one of the most important chemical reactions in the sea.
14:32 And you know what that means.
14:34 I do?
14:36 It means I've got to figure out bioluminescence
14:38 for my next creature power suit.
14:41 I guess it's up to you and me to find the lost crab brothers.
14:44 Do I have to do everything around here?
14:47 Wow.
14:50 Ha, a dragonfish.
14:52 We hit the jackpot, bro.
14:54 These guys are the masters of bioluminescence.
14:57 They use it for everything.
14:59 Tell me about it.
15:01 Those photophores on the side are for communication with other dragonfish.
15:05 He can turn them on at will when he has something to say.
15:08 And the light on the tip of the barbel is sometimes used to confuse predators.
15:13 But mostly, it's used as a fishing pole.
15:17 Wait, what's that under his eyes?
15:23 Oh, got to scan this.
15:25 Whoa, it's a special red light.
15:31 A spy light that other fish down here can't see.
15:34 Humans can't see it either.
15:36 So dragonfish have invisibility power.
15:40 They're like spies.
15:42 They can see with that light, but other fish, like predators and prey, can't see them.
15:46 Wow.
15:48 Are you thinking what I'm thinking, bro?
15:50 I think I'm thinking what you're thinking.
15:52 I think we're thinking the same thing.
15:55 Aviva, come in.
15:58 Dragon chasers here.
16:00 Dragon chasers?
16:02 We need a dragonfish suit.
16:05 They have the coolest bioluminescence.
16:07 Dragonfish?
16:09 Okay, I'm already working on bioluminescence, so no problem.
16:13 Listen, guys, I hate to burst your light show bubble, but we still don't know where you are.
16:18 And our power is dying.
16:24 Exactly.
16:27 This is serious, guys.
16:28 In just a few seconds, your power will go.
16:31 Uh-oh.
16:32 If the power goes, all systems will shut down, and you'll sink like a stone.
16:37 That doesn't sound good.
16:39 I'll check the reserve power.
16:41 Uh-oh, it's flowing fast.
16:43 No, no, no, come on, come on.
16:47 We got to get that GPS working so they can find us.
16:50 And now, I'm on it.
16:52 Maybe I can retro-engineer something.
16:54 Yeah, with what?
16:55 There's nothing but water around here.
16:58 So, if I reload the transmortifying circuit and attach it to the P-24 modulator through the electrostatic bypass, it might--
17:07 Oh, what?
17:09 It just needs to be plugged in.
17:11 Goblin sharks.
17:13 Plug it in, quick, while you still have the power.
17:17 Here goes.
17:18 Yes.
17:22 No.
17:25 We didn't make it in time.
17:28 We're doomed.
17:30 Oh, this is horrible.
17:34 They're falling into the abyssal zone, the deepest, darkest part of the ocean, 13,000 to 20,000 feet, over 40 skyscrapers deep.
17:45 We may never find them there.
17:47 Got it.
17:48 I got their coordinates just a millisecond before the power ran out.
17:52 Woo-hoo!
17:53 Awesome, Koki.
17:55 Let's go get them.
17:56 Full speed ahead.
17:58 Hey, what?
18:00 Why are we moving?
18:02 Is that what I think it is?
18:06 Well, it's not fried calamari.
18:12 Ah!
18:13 It's a colossal squid.
18:16 Like we didn't have enough problems, now we have to be caught in the clutches of a deep-sea squid the size of a bus.
18:22 If we hold him off a little bit, I just might have an idea.
18:28 We must be in the abyssal zone now.
18:33 We've never, ever been this deep before.
18:37 Yeah, we made it to a new creature adventure frontier for humankind.
18:50 Kind of hard to enjoy it, though, with the--the emphasis on crushing and all.
18:55 The new pressure systems Aviva designed don't work without power.
19:00 We'll be crushed by the deep-sea pressure.
19:03 Well, it was good creature adventure with you, bro.
19:06 We had a good run.
19:08 Yeah, we sure did, bro.
19:10 But it'd be really nice to see a new species before we turn into human pancakes.
19:16 Huh?
19:19 Hey, Dragon Glow!
19:21 Huh?
19:23 Dragonfish Power Discs!
19:26 Aviva did it!
19:28 It says "Mayday" with their coordinates.
19:33 They must be in trouble now.
19:35 We gotta hurry.
19:37 Touch Dragonfish!
19:39 Activate Dragonfish Power!
19:42 [♪♪♪]
19:51 Wow!
19:53 Human-sized dragonfish.
19:55 Love it, Dragon Glow!
19:57 This is awesome.
19:59 Ooh!
20:00 Maneuverable!
20:02 With working photophores!
20:05 Cool!
20:10 To the Wild Kratts Team Rescue!
20:14 Ooh, better take the amps up.
20:18 I think it's repairable.
20:20 [grunts]
20:24 Let go, you toothy fish face!
20:28 I can't break free!
20:31 Its tentacles are too strong!
20:33 I can't pull away!
20:35 Uh-oh!
20:37 Those serrated cutting discs!
20:39 Look out!
20:40 Ooh!
20:41 I hope the guys got our delivery.
20:43 I don't see them anywhere.
20:45 They should be around here somewhere.
20:50 But where?
20:52 There they are!
20:54 Yeah, I'd say this is a "Mayday" kind of situation.
20:58 Let's put our suits into spy mode,
21:00 so the squid can't see us.
21:03 Oh, yeah.
21:04 This calls for full dragonfish cloaking power.
21:07 Deep-sea invisibility on!
21:10 Let's just hope colossal squids can't see our red lights either.
21:15 It's working!
21:19 We can see him, but he can't see us.
21:23 Now, let's put these sharp jaws to use.
21:27 Yes!
21:30 These dragonfish teeth are impressive, Dragon Glo!
21:34 It's a good thing we're super-huge dragonfish,
21:38 because otherwise this squid would never feel it.
21:41 Ah!
21:47 I'm feeling that!
21:50 Ow! Hey!
21:52 The jaws work, but there are so many tentacles!
21:56 Whoa!
21:57 Ah! Missed me!
21:58 Keep going, Martin!
22:00 Take that!
22:02 And that!
22:03 And one more!
22:05 I'm not sure why, but it seems like he's loosening his grip.
22:12 It's us!
22:13 Martin!
22:14 With dragonfish power!
22:17 Uh-oh!
22:18 Over here! Can't catch us!
22:25 Okay, get ready to make a break for it if you can, Jimmy.
22:30 (roaring)
22:33 Ready?
22:34 Ready.
22:35 Now!
22:36 We're free!
22:44 Woo-hoo!
22:48 We did it!
22:50 Now, finally, we can get back to our search,
22:53 deeper than we've ever gone before.
22:56 New species with new creature powers?
22:58 Here we come!
23:00 Ha-ha! Let's do it for science!
23:03 Huh? Gourmand!
23:07 Here, fishy-fishies!
23:10 Look at those deep-sea creatures!
23:12 What's Gourmand up to?
23:14 I don't know, but it's a good thing we still have dragonfish invisibility power!
23:18 Dragon glow! Look out!
23:24 Ha-ha! With this green light, they just come right to me!
23:28 At this rate, I'll harvest all the creatures in the deep sea!
23:33 (laughing)
23:35 Oh, no!
23:37 Gourmand is going to destroy all the creatures in the deep sea
23:41 before they're even discovered!
23:45 (thunder rumbling)
23:48 (sighing)
23:53 Okay, systems check.
23:55 Everything seems to be functioning fine with our new deep-sea vessel.
23:58 Koki, bearings.
24:00 Looks like we're in the abyssal zone.
24:02 This area right here, 13,000 to 20,000 feet down,
24:06 that's the distance of 40 city skyscrapers.
24:09 Wow!
24:10 That's a new low! I mean, it's the deepest we've ever been before.
24:14 Not a lot of humans have ever gone this deep.
24:17 Our new deep-sea vessel is holding up great.
24:21 Yeah, but I'm not.
24:23 And Chris and Martin? Don't tell me we lost them again.
24:27 Creature alert!
24:30 (screaming)
24:32 Huh?
24:33 Huh?
24:34 (thunder rumbling)
24:36 (screaming)
24:38 Huh?
24:40 Don't sneak up on me in those dragonfish power suits.
24:44 Hey, those look good if I do say so myself.
24:48 Dragonfish are pretty ferocious looking for a little deep-sea monster
24:51 that only gets about six inches long.
24:53 Quick, let us in. We've got a problem.
24:56 Okay, so go to the portal for re-docking.
24:59 (upbeat music)
25:01 (whooshing)
25:03 (clicking)
25:05 (clicking)
25:07 (whirring)
25:09 (whirring)
25:11 Deactivate!
25:14 Glad you're back.
25:17 Yeah. Uh, the episode got a little crushed.
25:21 A little?
25:23 But you can fix it, right?
25:25 So what's the creature alert all about?
25:28 It's not good. Gourmand is down here.
25:31 Somehow he got hold of a submarine that can go this deep too.
25:35 You're kidding.
25:37 It's true. We saw him with our own dragonfish photo force.
25:41 The ultimate deep-sea spy creature power.
25:44 Gourmand's down here collecting deep-sea creatures.
25:48 He got our buddy Dragon Glow and a lot of other creatures.
25:52 What? We're down here trying to discover and understand unknown sea creatures
25:58 and he's down here destroying them before people even know about them?
26:02 That's wrong.
26:04 Right. I mean, that's right that it's wrong.
26:07 You know what I mean. We've got to stop him.
26:10 Oh, but we can't stop our search for new creatures.
26:13 We're on a once-in-a-lifetime mission, breaking new ground for science,
26:17 trying to discover new species.
26:20 I know. But if we don't deal with Gourmand,
26:23 there might not be any new species left to search for.
26:27 Well, one thing is for sure. Sitting still won't help.
26:31 So we better get moving and just search. And we'll see what we find.
26:35 Let's go!
26:37 And I'll get to work on this.
26:40 Awesome!
26:45 We did it! We made it to the bottom of the sea!
26:49 Giant isopods!
26:54 Awesome. I never thought we'd meet creatures that live on the bottom of the ocean.
27:00 Whoa! I didn't think anything could live down here. How do they do it?
27:05 Yeah. And what do they eat?
27:07 Believe it or not, they eat mostly things that sink down from above.
27:11 Little pieces of dead things. Or big dead things.
27:16 Look!
27:17 Whoa! A whale fall!
27:19 Whale fall?
27:21 Yeah. When a whale dies, it sinks.
27:24 And becomes a feast for creatures at the bottom of the sea.
27:28 Those guys will eat now. And then they can go for four years without eating at all.
27:34 By then, they may find another whale fall or a smaller meal.
27:38 Wow! That's weird. Like food falling from the sky.
27:42 Yeah. And you never know when it's coming.
27:46 What's that?
27:50 Awesome!
27:52 Que hermoso!
27:54 That thing must be new to science. Mission accomplished. Can we head back to Earth?
27:58 Sorry, Jimmy. It's a type of Dumbo octopus.
28:01 And deep-sea remote cameras only recently captured this guy on film.
28:06 He's named after those ear-like wings that help him swim.
28:10 But hardly anything else is known about this octopus.
28:14 Ah! Pulpo!
28:16 Huh?
28:17 Pulpo. It's the Spanish word for octopus.
28:20 You know, I didn't even know this guy existed. But he looks a lot like my new deep-sea vessel.
28:26 Hey! I think I just found a new name for our vessel.
28:30 The Pulpo-naut. I'll name it after him.
28:33 Well, then I guess this guy's name should be Pulpo.
28:37 Ha ha! I think he likes it.
28:41 Pulpo, where are you headed?
28:44 (Drumming)
28:47 Ah!
28:51 Whoa!
28:54 (Sighing)
28:56 It looks like... a mountain.
29:00 Um, was this on the map?
29:02 This must be the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
29:05 It's the longest mountain range in the world, but still so unexplored.
29:09 I've got to map it more.
29:11 These underwater mountain ranges have to be home to lots of new creatures.
29:15 We need to explore it.
29:17 And who knows? Gourmand just might be hiding out somewhere around this underwater mountain, too.
29:23 Pulpo! Nice find.
29:26 Hey, I think he wants us to follow him.
29:29 Well, it worked so far.
29:31 Hey, wait for us, buddy!
29:40 Whoa! Jimmy, slow down!
29:43 He just pounced on something. Octopus style.
29:47 Oh, boy. We're about to witness a new behavior.
29:50 And a new creature power.
29:52 And I'll admit, Dumbo Octopus can cook.
29:57 Not a new behavior.
29:59 But it is a sign that we're on the right track to find Gourmand.
30:03 He's been here for sure.
30:05 Hmm. I think he wants us to keep following him.
30:09 Do you think this undersea alien of a creature is trying to lead us somewhere?
30:14 Well, octopuses are super smart.
30:16 And this is his world.
30:18 So maybe he knows something we don't.
30:21 Show us the way, Pulpo.
30:23 What's our position, Cokie?
30:29 The depth meter is saying we've risen all the way back up to the midnight zone.
30:33 This range is already taller than any mountain range on Earth.
30:38 Cokie, look!
30:39 Wow! We made it to the mountain summit.
30:44 But there's a crack in the middle.
30:46 The Earth is cracking open like an egg.
30:49 The world is about to end.
30:51 It's splitting, all right. But believe it or not, it's normal.
30:55 If we head down there, I'll show you.
30:57 Are you crazy?
30:59 Hydrothermal vents!
31:04 What planet are we on again?
31:07 This is Earth, all right.
31:09 Guys, I remember these from your adventure with Sea Squatch the Yeti Crab.
31:15 These hydrothermal vents are a part of many underwater mountain ranges.
31:20 They're formed when water leaks down towards the hot Earth's core.
31:24 When it gets superheated, it's forced back up through the rock and bursts out of the rock, forming the vents.
31:31 It's scalding hot and full of chemicals and minerals, right?
31:34 Yeah. And a special kind of chemobacteria can actually live off that hot chemical soup.
31:42 Kind of like plants on land and microscopic plankton on the surface of the ocean can live off sunlight.
31:49 Only a few years ago, scientists thought all food chains began with energy from the sun.
31:55 But when vents were discovered, everything changed.
31:58 They realized that new food chains start way down here, too.
32:02 With energy not from the sun, but from the hot chemical soup spewing from the Earth.
32:09 Oh, whoa! I'm dizzy.
32:14 I know! It's dizzyingly cool!
32:17 Down here, it all starts with the little bacteria that can convert the chemicals into food.
32:22 And animals eat the bacteria, which starts whole food chains that people never knew existed.
32:28 With strange animals like yeti crabs, and who knows what else.
32:33 That's it!
32:34 Where is it? Here. Oh, no.
32:38 Got it! My yeti crab power disk.
32:42 And in my creature souvenir kit, I have...
32:46 Got it! A shed yeti crab carapace that I collected.
32:55 Guys, do yeti crabs even live at this particular thermal vent?
32:59 Nobody really knows. It's still pretty unexplored.
33:02 But we do know yeti crabs have the power to survive hydrothermal vents.
33:06 And I've got to get out there with the creatures.
33:09 I'm going yeti!
33:11 Activate yeti power!
33:15 [music]
33:17 Oh, yeah! This suit is awesome!
33:28 The hairy arms that collect chemobacteria, the crushing claws.
33:33 I am ready to go!
33:35 Let's get to it, bro. I'll take the F-A-Sub!
33:39 What? I just finished fixing it.
33:42 Don't worry. I won't smush it this time.
33:45 Maybe I'll leave the tools out. I'll be needing them again real soon.
33:49 Okay! We're ready for deployment.
33:53 Miniaturize!
33:55 And launch!
33:59 Woo-hoo!
34:06 Jimmy, now I can show you what this giant crack in the earth is all about.
34:11 You really don't have to.
34:13 Down we go!
34:16 Popo, touch down!
34:23 I'll check it out!
34:25 He's eating a... shrimp!
34:31 Makes more sense than an oven mitt.
34:33 And look here. Chemobacteria is covering these vents.
34:40 And the shrimp are munching on it.
34:42 They're vent shrimp, a special type of shrimp that only lives here,
34:48 miles and miles under the surface of the ocean.
34:52 And they're all picking at that chemobacteria that is growing here.
34:56 Grinding it up, they're grazing on the bacteria like rabbits or gazelles graze on grass.
35:05 Popo, you led us right to the start of a new underwater food chain.
35:11 Aw.
35:13 Hey, thanks for showing us your world.
35:17 Wee-hee! And for the fun ride!
35:21 Hey, Chris, this little guy is eyeing me.
35:23 Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
35:25 Uh, I don't think so. Vent shrimp don't really see.
35:30 They only see heat, remember?
35:32 Well, yeah, that's right. I mean, down here it's pitch dark, so seeing isn't really important.
35:37 But finding chemobacteria by the hot smokers is.
35:41 So they see heat!
35:43 Ha-ha-ha! What a creature power!
35:46 And I'll call you Heat Seeker.
35:49 Huh? Over there! Behind Popo!
35:54 What's that?
35:56 I've never seen anything like it before.
35:59 Could it be?
36:00 I think so.
36:02 A new species!
36:04 Let's go!
36:05 Whoa!
36:07 Ha-ha-ha!
36:10 Huh?
36:11 Ooh, rare! Never tasted before shrimp!
36:15 Mmm, might go good with some of these clams.
36:18 And I'll use this as a garnish!
36:21 Gourmand, we found him!
36:24 But we also found a new species back there.
36:29 Ha-ha-ha! I'm ready to cook!
36:32 Off to the boiling pots!
36:35 Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
36:37 But, new species, I...
36:41 Oh, Gourmand always shows up at the wrong time.
36:44 Stay right there, new species. I'll be back!
36:47 Wow! Look at all that underwater volcanic action and lava!
36:55 See, Jimmy? That's what this crack in the Earth is all about!
36:59 The sea floor is spreading and widening, but only a little bit every year.
37:04 And the lava bubbles up from this long line of volcanoes,
37:07 forming this mountain range that stretches down the entire Atlantic Ocean.
37:11 Oh, great! Like, could it get any more dangerous down here?
37:15 Well, yeah! They could erupt at any time!
37:18 Did you have to tell me that?
37:20 Emphasis on mothership! We've got a problem!
37:24 Go, Chris!
37:26 We found Gourmand, and it's way worse than we could have ever imagined.
37:30 He's set up a massive deep-sea kitchen down here!
37:35 Let the deep-sea cooking begin!
37:38 Oh, no!
37:40 And that's not all. He got Martin!
37:43 Can't we catch a break?
37:45 We've got to get out of here!
37:47 Whoa!
37:51 Gourmand, no! Stop!
37:54 Huh? You! Blueberry in the deep sea?
37:59 Well, no blueberries down here, but, yeah, it's me, Martin!
38:05 And you need to let all these deep-sea creatures go.
38:08 You can't cook 'em. We hardly know anything about 'em.
38:12 Exactly! We don't know how they taste!
38:15 And that's what I'm gonna find out!
38:19 But look, this is a barreleye we just met.
38:22 He has the coolest eyes, and nobody knows how they work yet.
38:26 I call 'em crazy eyes.
38:28 And here, meet Dragon Glow, the dragonfish.
38:32 Dragonfish have a special invisibility power that is hardly understood.
38:37 And goblin sharks, like Snaptro over here,
38:40 are one of the least understood sharks with awesome jaw power.
38:45 Yeah! Ah, no!
38:48 And here is Little Heatseeker, a totally cool vent shrimp who sees heat
38:54 and supports tons of life that we still have yet to discover.
38:58 Well, thanks for the factual tidbits, Crabcake!
39:02 They'll help me write my menu of rare delicacies from the deep.
39:07 You can't stop me!
39:10 But we can! Let them go!
39:14 Never!
39:18 (all gasp)
39:20 (all scream)
39:23 That may be a pretty formidable step, Gourmand,
39:27 but mine is built to last down here.
39:30 Ha ha! Oh, yeah? Take this!
39:34 (all grunting)
39:38 Eat me, doughballs!
39:40 Jimmy, evasive action!
39:42 Can't stick me!
39:44 Oops!
39:46 Can I try that again?
39:48 Ha ha ha! Now stick around while I cook!
39:52 You sure it's hot enough?
39:54 Hey, Stalbro, we need some deep-sea help here,
39:57 and I know just who I need to find.
40:00 Now let's stoke up these boilers nice and hot!
40:04 Uh, Gourmand, I wouldn't do that if I were you.
40:11 Yeah? Why not?
40:14 Uh, because you really don't want to go
40:17 banging around with a giant mallet
40:19 on an underwater volcanic ridge!
40:22 Ha ha! Really?
40:27 Yeah, really.
40:29 Underwater eruption! Look out!
40:32 Yes!
40:36 There you are! We need your help, buddy.
40:41 Insert creature power disc and...
40:45 activate giant squid power!
40:49 Ho ho! Now this is a true monster of the deep.
41:03 A 40-foot-long multi-tentacled cephalopod.
41:07 Giant squid power for a giant rescue!
41:11 Look out! Red-hot magma chunks!
41:16 Oh! We gotta get out of here!
41:18 I can't break free!
41:21 Keep trying, Jimmy! Use full power!
41:24 I'm trying, but this dough is sticky!
41:27 Look out, creature pals!
41:29 If one of those rocks hits us, we're toast!
41:32 To the creature rescue!
41:36 You're free!
41:38 Hey, Gourmand, these creatures don't want to be fried or boiled.
41:42 Huh?
41:44 Way to go, Chris!
41:47 I brought reinforcements!
41:49 Ta-da!
41:51 Bumper's mom!
41:54 Just in time.
41:57 Activate sperm whale powers!
42:02 [whale sounds]
42:05 Yes! Swim, creatures, swim! Awesome!
42:18 The power of one of the deepest-diving mammals in the creature world.
42:22 No! Those creatures are mine!
42:26 No, they're not, Gourmand. They belong living free and in the deep.
42:31 Guys, help! I can't break free!
42:35 Sperm whale powers to the polka dot rescue!
42:40 [screaming]
42:45 We're free!
42:47 Let's get out of here!
42:49 You better go, too, Gourmand, or you'll get caught!
42:53 Whoa!
42:56 Whoa! Abandon ship!
43:03 Oh, my poor sub.
43:08 You can keep your deep-sink creature for now.
43:12 You thinking what I'm thinking?
43:14 Oh, yeah, we're thinking the same thing.
43:16 To the new species!
43:22 I don't see him. He's gone.
43:25 No, he can't be. He was right here.
43:29 Guys, we gotta go back up.
43:31 The polka dot needs a detailed status check pronto.
43:35 [sigh]
43:37 Well, bro, we didn't quite find that new species.
43:43 Yeah, I'll always wonder what he was and what creature power he had.
43:48 So close to a dream come true.
43:52 Cheer up, guys. We made the right decision.
43:55 We protected those deep-sea creatures for future expeditions.
43:59 It's true. We did find some amazing little-known creatures
44:03 that were only recently discovered.
44:05 And you know what?
44:07 All the new species we were looking for are still down there,
44:11 just waiting to be discovered by someone.
44:14 Thanks to the new sub you made, I think we'll be down there again.
44:18 Yep, she did hold up great.
44:21 And we got deeper than ever before.
44:25 And don't forget, I got some good mapping data of unknown territory.
44:29 So, till the next adventure,
44:32 Step by Step Science and the Quest for Knowledge marches on.
44:37 But right now, I'm just marching to my lounge chair.
44:41 And that's a creature mission accomplished!
44:46 So, the deep sea is the most difficult habitat on Earth to get to and explore.
44:55 But it's an amazing place filled with incredible creatures.
44:59 And inventions like Alvin, here at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution,
45:04 help us to learn more about the Earth's last great creature frontier.
45:09 Hey, you want to check out some of the features of this amazing submarine?
45:13 Alvin has seven different thrusters to help move the vessel in all different directions.
45:19 These thrusters propel the submarine forward.
45:23 And a thruster like this helps the submarine move up and down.
45:28 This incredible hull is made up of three-inch thick titanium metal
45:35 and is able to withstand 6,800 pounds per square inch of pressure.
45:41 It is total darkness in the deep sea.
45:43 So, if you want to see any animals, you got to bring your own lights.
45:47 The Alvin is also equipped with high-definition video cameras.
45:52 So, if there are any new forms of life swimming around that we haven't seen before,
45:56 those cameras can spot them.
45:58 Oh, yeah, check out these robot arms.
46:01 They're fully functioning, can move in all different directions.
46:04 Very precisely and even pick up specimens off the sea floor
46:09 and put them right here on this basket to bring them up to the surface.
46:14 Oh, this is so cool.
46:18 This is it, the inside of Alvin.
46:22 There's enough room down here for a pilot and two scientists.
46:26 Three people total.
46:28 Controls. It would take a long time to learn how to pilot this submarine.
46:34 There are five windows and right through here, if you get lucky,
46:38 you could spot an unknown species of animal.
46:41 Wow, Alvin and the scientists here at Woods Hole have made major contributions to science.
46:49 And there is still so much of the deep sea to explore.
46:52 Who knows what new discoveries and new creatures are waiting for us down there.
46:57 Now let's have a look at some of the samples Alvin has collected for science.
47:02 Come on.
47:03 Hey, Tim, how are you?
47:05 Hey, good to see you.
47:07 How's it going? Good to see you again.
47:09 This is our friend, Dr. Tim Shank.
47:12 He's a deep sea biologist here at Woods Hole and an expert on deep sea creatures.
47:17 So what do you got today, Tim?
47:18 Great. We got a variety of animals here, some that are from two miles down,
47:22 some that are from five miles down.
47:24 And some of the greatest collections we have here are those from the hydrothermal vents.
47:27 This is a giant tube worm. So they're awesome.
47:29 The tube worms, yeah.
47:31 They grow like seven to ten feet long.
47:33 Whoa.
47:34 And they have no mouth, no gut.
47:35 They just have a plume that takes in the hydrothermal water and brings it to a big bag of bacteria.
47:40 And the amazing thing is that these tube worms can get energy from the bacteria.
47:45 The bacteria are actually getting it from the hydrothermal vents.
47:49 That's right.
47:50 So they're getting all energy coming from the sun, but these tube worms change the game.
47:55 So these are the tubes that the worms live in, right?
47:57 This is the rift tube. Yeah, the giant tube worm.
47:59 Okay.
48:00 These are smaller ones. Like I said, they get to about seven to ten feet.
48:02 Really?
48:03 Yeah.
48:04 Seven to ten feet.
48:05 Really cool.
48:07 Have you ever seen a yeti crab?
48:08 I have seen a yeti crab.
48:09 I love that bacteria collecting air, covering their bodies.
48:13 Now check this out. This one here, these are the vent shrimp.
48:17 These are my favorite.
48:18 They're so cool because of their creature powers.
48:20 These guys live three miles down in the deep sea, and yet they can see dim light.
48:25 What?
48:26 That's what we said.
48:27 There's hardly any light getting down there.
48:28 That's right, but the black smokers are so hot, they emit black body radiation.
48:32 And the dim light, right at the throat where the water comes out.
48:36 It's almost like seeing heat.
48:38 That's right.
48:39 This is awesome creature power.
48:40 Isn't that amazing?
48:41 That's amazing.
48:42 That's so cool.
48:43 Have you ever encountered any new squids or octopuses down there?
48:46 All the time. We see octopuses more.
48:48 There are certain species that only live at vents.
48:50 They love to eat mussels.
48:51 When we collect mussels, we look at their shells, and sometimes they have a hole in them.
48:55 And that's where the octopus has grabbed it and drilled in there, had a meal.
48:59 Wow, this is awesome stuff, Tim. Thanks for showing us.
49:02 Yeah, and remember, there's always so much more to discover about this amazing planet upon which we live.
49:08 And the fellow creatures we share this planet with.
49:11 Keep on creature adventuring.
49:13 We'll see you on the Creature Trail.
49:15 [music]
49:33 To find out more about cool animals and collect your own Wild Kratts creature powers,
