00:00 It's easy to do things and live nowadays because of modern technology.
00:06 From shopping, paying bills, to taking care of children.
00:12 All of these can be done using gadgets and digital platforms.
00:17 Despite the difficulties it brings, there are things we should know.
00:23 What are the benefits and downsides of gadget parenting?
00:27 Or how does parenting using gadgets and digital technology affect their growth?
00:36 Those and other important tips for the proper use of technology in parenting
00:43 will be answered this morning here on MIL 101.
00:53 What is the right way to be a parent in this age of technology?
00:58 Let's find out together with Maffei Velasco, a certified facilitator of the Wellbeing Boost Program.
01:04 Good morning from here, live in California.
01:07 Hi Ms. Maffei, good morning.
01:09 Good morning, good morning. Hi PP, good to see you again.
01:14 Yes, it's been a while Ms. Maffei.
01:16 We want to know what we call digital parenting or gadget parenting.
01:23 Well, it is what it is. Digital parenting is pretty much guiding or supervising your children
01:31 while giving them the gadget, giving them the time to explore, play games,
01:38 or even use as a resource for their homework or just for learning.
01:44 So with that being said, we need to know everything they're doing.
01:52 Ms. Maffei, how does this make it easier for a parent to supervise their child
01:59 and what are the possible effects of early exposure to technology?
02:05 Well, actions speak louder than words, right?
02:09 As a parent, we need to be role models.
02:13 We also use the gadgets for work or learnings.
02:18 So communication is key.
02:20 When we allow or give them permission to use the gadget,
02:25 communicate with your children why you allow it and what it is used for.
02:31 For one, education or even skills, brain exercise for certain games or even learnings.
02:42 As a parent, I intentionally build my business on that path to understand what is out there.
02:51 What is social media, YouTube, and Google's applications.
02:58 Different platforms, yes.
02:59 Yes, all of it.
03:01 Anyway, there are parents who, when their child cries,
03:06 they just reach out to their child's phone and watch it so that it doesn't cry again.
03:12 What could be the risk factors and threats that could affect children exposed to digital parenting?
03:21 First, we as a guide to our children.
03:26 I know, yes, I'm guilty when it comes to hardships, challenging times,
03:31 when you're busy cooking or in the middle of a meeting or like this interview,
03:36 you'll give them the gadget.
03:37 But always have the communication in the beginning.
03:41 Because if you don't communicate, they're not going to be very open with you.
03:48 They won't know how to ask questions about the difficult challenges in life.
03:54 First, we as a guide, apart from their teachers, grandparents,
04:02 we need to have a human touch.
04:05 Because at the end of the day, you don't want to be an influence in their lives.
04:12 Well, because of course, a lot of our fellow countrymen,
04:16 I mean, maybe comparing is bad, right?
04:19 But we can't avoid it. Sometimes, we're told that we're like this, we play outside.
04:24 It's like informal teaching on a face-to-face interaction.
04:28 But now, usually, what children do is through online or through digital.
04:33 So, how long, or should we say, what could be the effect of the cognitive development of a child
04:41 being exposed with digital media?
04:44 Communication skills. The lack of communication skills.
04:49 Speaking in front of, let's say, social gatherings.
04:52 Or even asking a question in school.
04:55 Because they can research there.
04:57 So, why would they ask the teacher?
05:00 Whereas, it's also always nice to have that vocal kind of skills.
05:05 And just to go back to your last question on if the child cries,
05:09 what I've been taught is that a child needs AA batteries.
05:15 Attention and affection.
05:17 So, if you're able to do it as a parent, even when they were little, like a baby,
05:21 they can't operate the gadgets, then that's the way we should parent.
05:28 Especially in this modern day of technology,
05:31 that's our competitor as a parent, right?
05:34 Ms. Mavay, we know that we can't totally control the access of children to gadgets.
05:41 Especially if they're not at home.
05:43 So, how can we teach them the right limits in using gadgets?
05:48 And how long is the suggested screen time of a child?
05:53 Like I mentioned earlier, it's all about communication skills.
05:58 Before anything, they need to talk.
06:01 This is a privilege.
06:03 I am giving you an opportunity that normally adults only have.
06:09 Once you have this, this is the rules.
06:12 This is the time frames.
06:14 Don't be shy because you need energy the next day.
06:18 Especially for the young ones, at least be there.
06:21 When they're on the gadgets, I'm really attached to the screen
06:26 so I can see what they're watching.
06:29 In my household, especially the younger ones,
06:33 because I have a 4-year-old and an 8-year-old,
06:35 2-3 hours a day, spread out.
06:39 I know that others...
06:40 They're just divided.
06:42 Yes.
06:43 It's not good to be on the gadgets for 2 hours straight.
06:48 It's not good for the eyesight, even health.
06:52 It's not enough.
06:53 For me, I really encourage them to stand up and stretch.
06:58 Or whatever you're watching, let's do an exercise.
07:01 Let's dance.
07:02 Let's sing.
07:04 As long as it's a group or a family event or exercise.
07:10 Nurturing values through being with the family, bonding with them.
07:15 Well, it's just for the young ones.
07:17 There's a concept of kidfluencers.
07:19 We can't avoid it.
07:20 Of course, they become famous and the contents that they do.
07:26 What do we usually give or what could be the advices that we can give
07:31 to protect them from harmful content and predator online?
07:37 Talk to them.
07:41 Teach them what's right and what's wrong.
07:45 And then when they see it, communicate with them.
07:49 Actually, with my children, I always ask them,
07:51 "What are you watching now?"
07:53 Even though I see it, I ask, "What are you learning?"
07:57 "What do you like about this person?"
08:00 What do they say?
08:02 Is that a good thing or is it a bad thing?
08:05 From there on, I already become interactive to what influences them.
08:12 Meaning to say, when they see a comparison,
08:16 "Oh, they got this, they got that."
08:18 "Oh, you also have amazing things and opportunities."
08:22 So you're just like that person.
08:24 Actually, even better.
08:25 There.
08:26 So in a way, we can see that through different kinds of communication,
08:30 our children will be more literate when it comes to usage of media and information.
08:38 Anyway, thank you very much, Ma'am Afei, for taking the time to answer our questions.
08:43 To the parents, always keep in mind and watch out for your child's exposure
08:48 to the internet and gadgets, and above all, be a good role model for them.
08:54 Thank you so much, Ms. Ma'am Afei.
