00:00 "The amount of patination suggests that they are infinitely older than a thousand years."
00:08 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most
00:12 unexplainable natural and human-made phenomena on the planet.
00:15 "We get this word 'Croatoan,' but did people actually make it there? Where did they go?"
00:21 Number 30. Loch Ness, Scotland
00:25 Who knew one lake could hold so many secrets?
00:28 The reality of what lies inside the murky waters has been a topic of fierce debate for nearly a
00:33 century. "I would never see it was a monster, I wasn't sure, but this particular time there
00:38 was no doubt whatsoever." It was once widely believed that a cryptid dubbed the Loch Ness
00:42 monster made the body of water its home. Theories started flying as soon as an iconic photo of the
00:48 creature's silhouette was published. While that picture ended up being a hoax, many still wonder
00:53 what Nessie could be. There are some crazier guesses, such as it being the descendant of
00:57 dinosaurs, although many have accepted that the explanation is likely much more mundane.
01:02 "I saw the head, the neck, and the huge body, which I'd say was about 50 feet long."
01:07 "And what's the closest you've ever been to it?"
01:09 "Oh, within about less than 10 yards."
01:12 Whether the fabled creature is just a large eel or an inanimate object,
01:16 the mystery has helped Scotland's tourism industry thrive.
01:20 29. Roswell, New Mexico
01:22 What started as an unexpected incident has spiraled into a web of conspiracies.
01:27 The town of Roswell has become one of the most significant in recent American history
01:31 due to a supposed UFO crashing nearby. "The farmer who owned that ranch called the military
01:36 and they came to pick it up." While it was brushed away as a meteorology device,
01:41 many were adamant that the object wasn't all that it appeared to be. When one retired officer
01:46 purported that the original story had been a lie, chaos broke loose. The hypotheses escalated
01:52 wildly, ranging from an Aztec-piloted ship to a failed alien invasion. The rumors became so
01:59 widespread that the military had to make a statement denying the claims. "A day later,
02:03 that officer recanted." "The disc was a part of a weather balloon. No big deal." Despite this,
02:09 staunch believers haven't given up hope that the Martians made contact with our planet,
02:14 even if it was brief.
02:16 Number 28. Coral Castle, Florida
02:18 While we know who carved these intricate statues, the answer to how remains an enigma. The sculptor
02:25 spent nearly three decades building it and allegedly didn't allow anyone to see his process.
02:30 Despite being made with oolite, a form of limestone that's hard to work with,
02:34 the craftsmanship of Coral Castle is flawless. The feat was achieved by one man without the use
02:40 of standard materials like mortar, and it mystified the locals. "People would say, 'Oh my God, last
02:46 week when I came, that moon wasn't here. How did he bring it?'" Some have come up with ideas about
02:50 how he made this possible, ranging from the paranormal to the use of magnetism. Even if the
02:56 truth ends up not being that exciting, his architectural work is some of the most breathtaking
03:00 in modern years and has since become a widely beloved tourist attraction.
03:05 Number 27. Taos, New Mexico
03:08 At first glance, this town seems entirely normal. However, there's one aspect that has caused it to
03:14 stand apart from every other area around it. For years, civilians have reported hearing a
03:24 constant humming sound. Dubbed the "Taos Hum," it has been the source of strife for several people.
03:30 "Some people can hear it, some people can't. Some people, like, it rattles their teeth and stuff
03:35 and like drives them insane, and some people hear it and doesn't bother them." While less than 5%
03:40 of the population has reported hearing it, those who do have found that it's endless.
03:44 Naturally, this bizarre occurrence has led to a widespread mystery. "As a potential weapons
03:50 application, it's been referred to as electrical nerve gas or maybe behind the so-called Taos Hum."
03:55 Some have speculated that it's the government attempting to control its citizens,
03:58 while others have argued that it's just the result of constant human activity.
04:02 No matter what the cause is, we can only imagine how grating the never-ending noise has become.
04:16 Number 26. Stone Spheres, Palmar Sur, Costa Rica
04:27 Okay, so they don't seem like much. However, these perfectly formed circular boulders have
04:32 become one of the biggest attractions in the entire country. Consisting of hundreds of stone
04:37 balls, the assortment has been stumping historians, visitors, and locals for quite some time.
04:43 They serve as one of the oldest archaeological sites on Earth, with some of them dating back
04:48 to ancient times. They've been credited to the now-extinct Dequis people. They are so
04:53 specifically shaped and aligned that many have wondered about their purpose and why they were
04:57 left there. While some have claimed that magic was involved, the most widely believed explanation
05:08 is that the defunct society wanted to recreate the solar system.
05:12 Number 25. Pine Gap, Australia
05:27 While it may seem like a regular base, there are still plenty of secrets hiding within it.
05:31 Despite being down under, the facility is shared with the United States military.
05:35 Sometimes the work could be mundane, it could be day to day, other times we could
05:38 be looking at something that is quite groundbreaking information that would
05:44 eventually be briefed to the President and the Prime Minister. It was originally passed off
05:48 as a space research facility, but was soon revealed to be a surveillance area. This bold-faced lie
05:54 ended up causing a stray sand effect, and brought an international spotlight to the facility and
05:59 what it was hiding. Wild assertions have been made about America's intentions with the location.
06:04 One political prisoner has even alleged that the country was withholding information from
06:16 Australia and intercepting phone calls that they felt were useful. Well, nothing has been proven.
06:21 Plenty of Aussies have protested the site and the lies spread by it.
06:25 Number 24. Skinwalker Ranch
06:28 The fact that this has been nicknamed after a horror legend should tell you everything you
06:33 need to know. Commonly known as Skinwalker Ranch due to the rumors surrounding it,
06:37 it's become one of the most fright-inducing locations in the United States. It's become
06:42 famous due to constant potential extraterrestrial activity. From creatures with glowing eyes to
06:54 crop circles being discovered, the weirdness never seems to stop. It's become a media spectacle,
07:00 with several movies and TV shows delving into possible explanations behind the phenomena.
07:05 There's been pushback from skeptics and previous owners, but it hasn't done much to stop the
07:09 curiosity. Whether it's aliens or a publicity stunt, the farm has made a legacy for itself
07:15 that won't be fading anytime soon. Number 23. Oak Island Money Pit
07:29 Nova Scotia, Canada
07:30 Buried riches seem like something you'd only hear about in fiction, but there may be some
07:40 real-life buried treasure hidden within Canada. The search has been ongoing for centuries,
07:44 beginning in the 18th century. While no one has a clear idea of what it is,
07:49 people have theorized that it could be anything from artistic works to gold and jewels.
07:54 Those who have tried exploring the area have been met with several pitfalls, from sinkholes to rocks
08:00 with mysterious inscriptions. As if that wasn't crazy enough, there's even a curse associated
08:11 with the hunt, stating that several people have to die before it can be solved. While
08:24 artifacts have been found, the treasure itself has remained elusive, and some wonder if it even
08:30 exists. Number 22. Roanoke Island, North Carolina
08:34 It's one of America's most unsettling mysteries. It's widely known that the nation started as a
08:40 series of colonies. While many managed to develop into cities, others weren't quite so lucky.
08:53 North Carolina's Roanoke Island was once home to a blossoming community,
08:57 until they all vanished without a trace. The only clue left behind was a cryptic message
09:03 carved in a tree. It's become one of the biggest unsolved mysteries to date,
09:07 with assumptions about their disappearance ranging from wholesome to morbid. Some choose
09:11 to believe they integrated into native tribes, while others are adamant that disease overtook
09:17 them. While people visit and live there now, the memory of the group still lives on today
09:22 in historical attractions and in popular culture. Number 21. Plain of Jars, Laos
09:28 Visiting this site feels like a portal to primeval times. A field containing a litany of stone jars
09:35 may not sound too exciting, but they're a cornerstone of Southeast Asian history.
09:40 Considered one of the most vital archival sites in the region, the vast array has stood the test
09:45 of time. While it's unclear what exactly they were used for, one widely accepted theory is
09:58 that they were utilized for burial rituals. There's even a myth that an extinct race of
10:04 giants used them for celebrations. The prehistoric site has since gained mass global fame.
10:15 While it was disrupted during the Vietnam War, the area can still be visited today,
10:19 where it serves as a potential example of ancient post-death customs.
10:23 Number 20. The Alaska Triangle, also known as Alaska's Bermuda Triangle
10:29 Spanning the vast southeastern reaches of the Alaskan wilderness up to its mountain ranges,
10:33 an unusual number of hikers, boats, and planes vanish without a trace here. In fact, the state
10:39 of Alaska has not only twice the American national average of people reported missing,
10:44 but also the lowest statistics for people found. Is it the unforgiving weather, wild animals,
10:49 immense uncharted terrain, or something more sinister? The indigenous Tlingit people tell
11:06 stories of a shape-shifting being called Kushtaka, meaning "land otter man," who mimics the screams
11:11 of children to lure unwary travelers to their deaths. Others blame Bigfoot or propose that
11:16 the area is a "vile vortex" like the Bermuda Triangle, linked to electromagnetic aberrations.
11:21 Number 19. The Stony Tunguska River, also known as Potkaminaya Tunguska River
11:27 In 1908, an explosion 1,000 times greater than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima
11:34 tore through the air over Siberia. Witnesses reported a column of bluish light as the
11:38 skies seemed to split in half and catch fire. The blast sent a shockwave that knocked people
11:44 off their feet and flattened 770 square miles of forest, toppling an estimated 80 million trees.
11:50 When the first expedition arrived to investigate, native guides would not enter the impact zone,
11:55 fearing people they called "the valley men." Strangely, the scorched trees in the center of
12:00 the blast zone remained upright. Scientific consensus attributes the blast to the explosion
12:05 of a meteorite in midair, leading some to blame natural gas and others to blame a collision with
12:10 an alien spacecraft. Number 18. The Temple of Jupiter
12:23 Located in modern-day Lebanon, this ancient temple of Roman design is now a little more
12:27 than rubble. While the architecture is largely in keeping with the style of the time,
12:31 and therefore not especially mysterious, the temple's foundation is another story.
12:35 Even after many years of study, experts are at a loss to explain how, using the technology of the
12:41 time, builders were able to displace and position foundation stones weighing approximately 1,000
12:46 tons apiece. For context, these are among the largest and heaviest stones used in construction
12:52 of any kind throughout human history, including today. Theories involve multiple cranes being
12:57 used in conjunction or rolling the stones using piles of earth, but it's all speculation at this
13:02 point. Number 17. The Devil's Sea
13:05 Also known as the Dragon's Triangle and the Pacific Bermuda Triangle, this is a region of
13:11 the Pacific Ocean that's south of Japan in which several ships have disappeared, notably the
13:16 Japanese research vessel Kaio Maru No. 5 in the early 1950s. Sailors have reported problems with
13:26 electronic instruments and sightings of unmanned ghost ships. American author and linguist Charles
13:31 Berlitz, who also popularized the idea of the Bermuda Triangle, made the area around Miyake
13:36 Island famous with his book The Dragon's Triangle in 1989. Although authorities claim that Kaio Maru
13:42 was destroyed by natural forces while the crew was investigating the eruption of an underwater
13:45 volcano, Berlitz attributed the incident to unknown supernatural forces, and even blamed
13:50 the Dragon's Triangle for the disappearance of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart.
13:55 Number 16. The Door to Hell
13:57 Also known as the Darvaza Gas Crater
14:00 This natural gas field is more formally known as the Darvaza Gas Crater, but that doesn't really
14:05 do it justice. 226 feet wide and 98 feet deep at its lowest point, this hellish-looking pit in the
14:11 Ahal province of Turkmenistan is just about the last thing you'd expect to stumble across as you
14:16 traverse the Karakum Desert. It's thought to have been burning continuously since 1971, when it was
14:21 intentionally set ablaze for fear that natural gas might affect local towns. Experts expected the
14:26 gas to burn off in a matter of weeks, but here we are nearly half a century later, and it continues
14:32 to glow as bright as the fires of hell. Now a tourist attraction, it's especially impressive
14:41 when seen at night. Number 15. Eternal Flame Falls, New York, USA
14:47 Can't get enough fire? Located in the United States and prefer something a little closer to
14:51 home? The Eternal Flame Falls in New York State are sure to satisfy. Like something straight out
14:56 of a fantasy film or video game, this waterfall in Chestnut Ridge Park contains a small grotto
15:01 where natural gas escapes, causing a small, perpetually burning flame. It does occasionally
15:07 go out and needs a little help to get it going again, but it generally persists unaided year
15:11 round. The Door to Hell might be more impressive due to its size, but there's something about the
15:15 combination of water and fire in such close proximity that adds to the overall sense of
15:20 mystery and wonder surrounding the Eternal Flame Falls. Number 14. The Richat Structure
15:25 This unique structure spanning 25 miles across has generated much speculation as to its origins.
15:31 At one point in time, this series of concentric ridged circles in west-central Mauritania
15:36 was thought to have been evidence of a meteor impact. Now, the geological site is believed to
15:41 be the result of erosion. However, the area around the Richat Structure has also revealed
15:45 a treasure trove of archaeological finds in the form of Acheulean artifacts, which date back to
15:51 the Lower Paleolithic period 300,000 years ago. This has sparked much speculation as to what the
15:56 Eye of Africa used to look like and what it meant to our ancient ancestors. Number 13. Teotihuacan,
16:03 Mexico This ancient Mesoamerican city is the site of some of the best-preserved and most
16:08 important pyramids on the continent. But for all the research that's been done, much remains a
16:12 mystery about Teotihuacan. The Aztecs discovered the city sometime in the 1400s, and even then,
16:25 it appeared as if it had been abandoned hundreds of years earlier. We do not know who built it,
16:30 but it seems as if its construction and expansion spanned from 400 BC to 300 AD. The city was
16:36 seemingly a center of trade and the site of ritual sacrifices, but the culture, politics,
16:41 language, and specific religion all remain question marks. Perhaps the greatest mystery
16:46 of all, however, is what led to the fall of this once-powerful ancient metropolis.
16:49 Number 12. The Nazca Lines Some 2,000 years ago, hundreds of
16:54 complex geoglyphs were carved into the desert sands of southern Peru. Composed of thousands
17:00 of lines, the geometric figures and animal and plant designs cover arid plateau south of Lima
17:05 that's more than 50 miles in size. As fascinating as they may be, many questions remain. How
17:11 were such complex designs created without aerial technology? Why did these people create shapes
17:16 in the soil that are only visible from the air or hilltops? While scholars claim the lines were
17:30 constructed using simple surveying equipment, others speculate the use of hot air balloons,
17:34 or that the lines were once alien airfields. Various other uses have been proposed,
17:39 from religious symbolism to astronomical calendars to irrigation, but their ultimate purpose remains
17:45 unknown. Number 11. North Sentinel Island
17:49 An isolated indigenous tribe has lived on this island in the Bay of Bengal for an estimated
17:53 60,000 years. Fringed by perilous reefs, the island is difficult to reach, and boats that do
17:59 land are met with a hail of arrows. As a result, little is known about the Sentinelese. Their
18:05 language is unclassified, and population estimates range from 50 to 400. During one failed expedition,
18:11 as tensions rose between locals and anthropologists cornered on the reefs,
18:15 some of the indigenous women made off with warriors and proceeded to have sex on the beach.
18:19 Which is certainly one way to cool off. What are the beliefs and customs of the Sentinelese?
18:34 What do they think of our metal ships and flying machines? Aside from rocks and arrows to the head,
18:38 the world at large may never make contact. And that might not be a bad thing.
18:43 Number 10. Island of the Dolls, aka Isla de las Munecas
18:48 As you navigate this creepy island just south of Mexico City, thousands of small, unblinking eyes
18:54 watch your passage. The island is actually man-made, dating all
19:04 the way back to the floating gardens of Aztec times. As legend has it, owner Julian Santana
19:09 Barrera found a little drowned girl in the canal and a doll floating close by, which he hung in a
19:14 tree as a sign of respect. But shortly following this act, he started to hear whispers, footsteps,
19:19 and screams following him in the dark. Santana Barrera spent the next half-century hanging dolls
19:25 to pacify the girl's spirit. When he died in 2001, his body was eerily found in the same spot he had
19:31 found the drowned girl. Number 9. Fairy Circles, Namibia
19:36 Every desert has its secrets, but few have drawn more attention or stumped the scientific community
19:42 quite like that of the Namib Desert in southern Africa. Leopards have spots, but grasslands?
19:47 Not typically. As long as anyone can remember, the desert has been home to sparse fields of
19:52 grass dotted with notably barren patches dubbed "fairy circles" due to their roughly circular
19:57 shape. They look entirely unnatural, and yet no human hand plays a role in their creation.
20:02 Locals have all manner of supernatural explanations from gods to dragons, while
20:07 the scientific community has suggested termite behavior and the competition between plants for
20:12 water. In the absence of a definitive answer, the polka dot landscape continues to invite speculation.
20:17 Number 8. The Michigan Triangle
20:20 Often compared to the Bermuda Triangle, which we will get to later, this region in Lake Michigan
20:25 is the site of numerous maritime and aviation disasters. Particularly notorious is the
20:30 straight-linking Lake Michigan and Green Bay, known as Port Damour or "Death's Door," which
20:34 is littered with shipwrecks thanks to hidden shoals and unpredictable winds. There have also
20:45 been reports, however, of UFOs, sea monsters, underwater Stonehenge-like alignments, and
20:51 theories that there are portals through time and space in the triangle. But the most famous
21:03 incident was the crash of Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 2501 in 1950, which killed all 58 passengers
21:10 and crew, and was the worst airline accident to happen in the United States to that point. Only
21:15 light debris and human body fragments were recovered. Although, mass burial sites were
21:19 recently discovered in local cemeteries. Regular searches for the wreckage continue.
21:23 Number 7. The Mapimí Silent Zone
21:26 Technological advances have allowed humanity to accomplish some pretty incredible things.
21:31 We're still able to receive information from Voyager 1 across a distance of 13.8 billion miles.
21:36 So, how is it that we can't manage to consistently maintain radio signals while crossing through this
21:42 stretch of desert in Mexico? Back in the 1930s, a pilot reportedly had his equipment go haywire
21:48 while flying over the area. Then, in the 1970s, the U.S. Air Force conducted a recovery mission
21:53 involving a test rocket and radioactive materials. Ever since, there are claims that radio and phone
21:58 signals will randomly drop in the area, though not consistently. People also allege to have
22:09 spotted UFOs in the silent zone, as well as mutated plants and animals.
22:13 Number 6. The San Luis Valley
22:16 Located in South Central Colorado and stretching into New Mexico, the San Luis Valley is like a
22:21 lightning rod for paranormal activity and strange phenomena. UFOs, flying humanoid-type creatures,
22:27 Bigfoot sightings, San Luis has reportedly played host to them all. It was also the site of a slew
22:32 of strange animal mutilations in the 1970s that have never been solved, and which many have
22:37 attributed to alien activity in the area. The San Luis Valley is a place where the
22:39 San Luis Valley has been a hot spot for UFOs since the early 1900s. It's also a place where the San

22:55 been a hot spot for UFOs since the early 1900s. It's also a place where the San Luis Valley has
22:55 been a hot spot for UFOs since the early 1900s. It's also a place where the San Luis Valley has
23:19 5. The Bermuda Triangle
23:22 This entry requires no introduction. It's among the most infamous stretches of sea in the world.
23:28 Dating back all the way to the late 15th century, this roughly triangular patch of ocean, defined by Florida, Bermuda and Puerto Rico, has been the site of numerous odd and unexplained occurrences.
23:37 "There seem to be spots around Bermuda where you get 2, 3 or 4 shipwrecks, one on top of the other."
23:42 It was here in 1492, that Christopher Columbus and his crew reported seeing a mysterious light.
23:47 Throughout the 1800s, various ships were lost, and many of them never recovered.
23:52 In the 1900s, the ships were soon joined by aircraft as they began to take to the skies over these troubled waters.
23:58 "The rogue wave occurs where several wave systems come together and they create a super wave.
24:03 They're rare, they don't happen very often, but when they do happen, you get a wave that can easily swamp a ship, even at supertanker size."
24:10 Theorists have suggested everything from the Gulf Stream or compass anomalies to UFOs, but the mystery persists.
24:17 Number 4. The Crooked Forest
24:20 In West Pomerania, Poland, just outside of Nowy Czernowo, lies a grove of pine trees unlike any other.
24:27 They date back to approximately 1930, and are notable for the uniformly odd shape of their trunks.
24:32 They all have a sharp bend to them, followed by a progressive C-shaped curve.
24:37 Trees shaped by the elements aren't uncommon, but they're typically the result of extreme winds, and there's nothing of the sort here.
24:44 As such, people assume the trees are the result of human intervention,
24:47 but to achieve this effect across 400 trees would have required a substantial amount of effort and coordination across a long period of time.
24:55 Others have suggested that a snowstorm could have uniformly damaged the trees, but neither explanation satisfies.
25:01 Number 3. Easter Island
25:03 887 monolithic stone statues watch over this remote Pacific island, carved by the Rapa Nui people as early as 1250 AD.
25:11 Most of these silent sentinels line the coast with their backs to the sea, many half-buried beneath centuries of soil.
25:17 "Some of them penetrate down into the ground by a great amount of feet to reveal the rest of the body, not just the oversized head."
25:28 What compelled people to build and transport such giant figures, some of which weigh over 80 tons?
25:33 While oral histories recount that the statues walked into place of their own volition,
25:37 scholars have proposed various theories, including that they were moved by rocking their bases back and forth, as if walking.
25:44 Scholars speculate that the statues represent deified ancestors, but the island stone guardians could not protect the Rapa Nui people,
25:50 whose population has been greatly abolished by deforestation, European diseases, and Peruvian slavers,
25:57 leaving the truth shrouded in mystery.
25:59 "You cannot help but think of Cusco in Peru, and there has to be a relationship between the two cultures.
26:10 All of these, part of a much bigger transmission of knowledge."
26:16 Number 2. Stonehenge
26:18 This is the name given to a ring of standing stones around 5,000 years old,
26:22 that are surrounded by hundreds of ancient burial mounds in Wiltshire, England.
26:26 Scholars have debated the significance of Stonehenge for decades.
26:30 How did prehistoric people transport the giant stones, some from hills 150 miles away?
26:35 Hypotheses include long tracks of logs, sleighs on greased tracks, and of course, aliens.
26:41 Oh, and let's not forget Merlin, or giants.
26:44 "A site like Stonehenge can only be understood by looking at the monuments around it, and how that landscape's evolved."
26:51 Opinions also differ as to the site's function.
26:54 Was it a burial site, a place of healing, or an astronomical observatory?
26:58 A portal to another universe? Maybe a sort of elaborate team-building exercise?
27:02 According to Royal College of Art researchers, the blue stones have quote, "unusual acoustic properties,
27:08 ringing when struck, which was often associated in ancient cultures with mystical properties."
27:13 No matter the explanations, few can deny the site's grandeur and magic.

27:32 Number 1. Area 51
27:36 U.S. Air Force Facility or Storehouse for Extraterrestrial Technologies.
27:41 Located deep in the Nevada desert, this remote research installation has been used as a test site
27:45 for experimental aircraft and weapons, with the dry bed of Groom Lake providing an ideal airfield.
27:51 But the secrecy around the site and a string of alleged UFO sightings have stimulated allegations
27:56 that the base houses crashed and reverse-engineered alien spacecraft and even alien collaborators.
28:15 While skeptics suggest the UFOs were reflections of light on the broad fuselage of aircraft such as the Lockheed U-2,
