00:00DB Cooper was very clever in terms of how he pulled this thing off.
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most
00:07fascinating discoveries and events that still remain unsolvable to this day.
00:12Should have been so routine.
00:14There are 59 flights a week from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
00:19Number 30.
00:20The Overton Bridge, West Dumbartonshire, Scotland.
00:23Dog lovers may want to brace themselves.
00:25Upon first glance, there isn't anything outwardly unsettling about Overton Bridge.
00:29Yet the Scottish structure has been the cause of several beloved pets' demise.
00:33So tell me about what happened when you walked Hendrix over the bridge.
00:37In the 1950s, dogs began leaping off the side for seemingly no reason.
00:42One moment they would be walking obediently with their owners, and the next, they would be gone.
00:47This would even occur in well-behaved canines.
00:50Was Hendrix prone to jumping?
00:52No.
00:52No?
00:53No.
00:54It's completely random.
00:55Aye.
00:56One dog specialist theorized that the scent of mink urine in the area could be driving them to
01:01jump.
01:01However, the presence of mink in the area is questioned.
01:04To this day, the phenomenon remains unsolved.
01:07So if you have to take your pooch across, we recommend keeping them on a tighter leash than
01:13usual.
01:14Number 29.
01:15The Crooked Forest, West Pomerania, Poland.
01:18Trees are fairly standard beings, with most growing from roots below ground.
01:22Yet the crooked forest in Poland appears to deviate from that norm entirely.
01:27Around 1930, a new grove of pines was added.
01:30Rather than stand up straight, they curved at the base, appearing to sit atop the dirt.
01:35The trees are all the same age, and they all bend north.
01:39Researchers are fairly certain human interaction was the cause,
01:43but why this shape was desired or how it was achieved still evades them.
01:48One of the leading theories is that they were grown that way to make carpentry easier.
01:52But even that has remained unproven.
01:54That particular theory maintains that the trees were shaped before 1930,
01:57but were abandoned before they could be harvested with the outbreak of World War II.
02:01The forest is available to visit, giving people from all over the
02:04world a chance to puzzle over the anomaly for themselves.
02:07Number 28.
02:08The Paracas Candelabra, Paracas Peninsula, Peru.
02:12Archaeologists are used to having to come up with explanations for the things they find.
02:16But not everything comes with a set background.
02:18Some finds are simply too bizarre to understand easily.
02:21Such as the Paracas Candelabra in Peru.
02:24Coming in at over 600 feet tall, the odd candelabra-shaped geoglyph has no
02:29established meaning or explanation for its existence.
02:32The only clue offering any sort of information was a collection of pottery found nearby,
02:37allowing experts to date the landmark as far back as 200 BCE.
02:41How or why the civilization at the time went about constructing it has remained elusive,
02:46making this one of the longest unsolved mysteries in human history.
02:50Number 27.
02:51The Patomsky Crater, Patom Highlands, Russia.
02:54Despite the huge size of the Patomsky Crater,
02:57how it came to be has eluded even the brightest experts.
03:00Though now it's more famous as the Patomsky Crater, locals had dubbed it Fire Eagle Nest,
03:06probably because it looks like a giant bird nest sitting on a hill.
03:09Located in the thickest of dense forestation, the formation stands at well over 500 feet tall,
03:15causing it to stick out like a sore thumb among the trees.
03:18Many of the current estimates are based on some level of scientific reasoning,
03:22from past volcanic activity to the landing spot of a fallen meteorite.
03:26They believe that the space rock entered the Earth's atmosphere at incredible speeds,
03:30but had been slowed down quite a bit by the time it struck the surface.
03:33A conference was even held in 2010 in order to find out the truth,
03:37and even that collection of impressive thinkers couldn't come to a definitive conclusion.
03:41Now it serves as verification that some answers may just always be outside our reach.
03:4726. The Oak Island Money Pit, Nova Scotia, Canada
03:51An island in Nova Scotia offers adventurers the chance to go on a
03:54real-life treasure hunt themselves, if they dare.
04:04For centuries, people have tried locating the supposed riches buried on Oak Island.
04:09What they're looking for has never been confirmed,
04:11with rumors ranging from the Holy Grail to pirate's gold.
04:16But there's no evidence of both silver and gold in this area.
04:20Could they be close to finally locating the so-called Chapel Vault?
04:24Those who've attempted to find it have never succeeded,
04:27thanks to things like sinkholes and a deadly curse
04:30that is claimed to have taken the lives of several men.
04:33With no verifiable evidence, some have wondered if the treasure even exists,
04:38or if it's simply just a hole.
04:39If you try to do a probability window, say, about the various theories, they all fit.
04:47If it's the latter, it'll have been the biggest goose chase in history.
04:50But for now, the mystery lives on.
04:5425. The Lost Colony of Roanoke, North Carolina, United States of America
04:59There are some occurrences we've only begun to question recently,
05:03but some have been puzzled over for centuries.
05:06Today, the Outer Banks of North Carolina are an inviting tourist destination.
05:11But 400 years ago, they were quite the opposite.
05:15The establishment of Roanoke was meant to be a symbol of new life in America.
05:18When John White returned to the colony from a supply run in 1590,
05:22he could have never anticipated what would await him.
05:25Nothing.
05:26His daughter and granddaughter are missing.
05:28In fact, there are no people and no houses.
05:32What remains is the wooden palisade that they built,
05:36and of course, the CRO carving that was found.
05:41What could this cryptic message possibly mean?
05:44Over 100 people disappeared,
05:46leaving behind no sign of life other than a cryptic message.
05:49There have been countless theories, both optimistic and pessimistic.
05:53Some believe the colonists were able to start anew among neighboring tribes,
05:57while others are adamant they were killed.
05:59There's even speculation that they left in order to make the founder look bad.
06:03With no answer in sight, it remains one of the country's oldest enigmas.
06:0824. The Hessdalen Lights, Hessdalen Valley, Norway
06:12Reports of strange lights are nothing new.
06:15For years, people have used them as evidence of the existence of aliens,
06:19as is the case with these which have appeared in Norway.
06:22I was standing out in the mountain together with some friends,
06:27and we saw this huge light in the mountainside, and then I knew there was a real phenomenon.
06:35They were first observed during the 1930s and have varied in both color and speed.
06:40This has made their origin hard to pin down,
06:43leading to observers creating ideas of their own.
06:46When you have studied so much and you haven't found any answer
06:50which lies inside ordinary known physics, it must be something new.
06:56Besides the usual claims of extraterrestrial beings,
07:00some scientists have posited more logical explanations,
07:03such as the explosion of airborne particles
07:05or the result of electricity coming from quartz in the nearby valley.
07:09Despite decades of research, no definitive conclusions have been made,
07:13meaning there is a chance they could be proof of other intelligent life beyond our atmosphere.
07:18We don't know, yet, and that makes it pretty exciting.
07:2323. Plane of Jars – Xianghuang Plateau, Laos
07:27Some phenomena are unexplainable due to human activities.
07:30The Plane of Jars is one of the planet's most elusive areas, but not for lack of interest.
07:36You're taking in this vista, this view of these megalithic jars,
07:39you knew that ancient man had built them.
07:41It consists of thousands of stone receptacles, with some dating back to 660 BCE.
07:47Originally, it was believed that a lost civilization of giants placed them there.
07:51More recently, it's believed that they were used in ancient burials.
07:54Now, another one that's out there is that giants once roamed the Earth,
07:59and these were vessels that the giants constructed.
08:03Unfortunately, it's impossible to truly verify,
08:06as it was targeted by United States forces during the Laotian Civil War.
08:09Over 250 million bombs were dropped, but 80 million never went off and remain active today.
08:16This makes it difficult to examine many areas of the Plane of Jars to find answers.
08:20You know, I really don't know why they were there,
08:23but I'm in awe, and as I said, it was a spiritual experience.
08:2622. Lead Masks Case – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
08:31Even the most dedicated true crime fans will be stumped by this event,
08:34with no known killer, motive, or even a cause of death.
08:37It's no wonder why the 1966 Lead Mask case immediately went cold.
08:42But after decades, experts are still baffled by the cause of Miguel Jose Viana
08:48and Manuel Pereira da Cruz's deaths.
08:50The two victims were discovered side-by-side,
08:53clad in suits and lead eye masks, alongside a set of bizarre instructions.
08:581630 – Be at the specified location.
09:021830 – Ingest capsules.
09:04After the effect, protect metals, await signal mask.
09:08It didn't help that authorities waited weeks to perform an autopsy.
09:12Leaving the organs too decomposed to properly study.
09:15While murder was the immediate assumption,
09:17the lack of struggle has led to more unique hypotheses,
09:20such as the pair attempting to communicate with aliens and accidentally dying.
09:24Whether it was by their own hand or someone else's,
09:26the details of their fate remain sought after to this day.
09:3021. The Mary Celeste – Nova Scotia
09:34Ships going missing or even being destroyed at sea is nothing new.
09:37However, the vessel being discovered with no sign of the crew is another story entirely.
09:42You've heard of a ship called the Mary Celeste?
09:45The Mary Celeste was last seen leaving a port in November of 1872,
09:50with nothing appearing to be amiss.
09:52Just a month later, another ship came upon it,
09:55and found that everyone aboard had vanished.
09:58Nothing? No passengers? No crew? No captain? No sign of distress?
10:06There were signs of previous struggles,
10:08including ripped sails and a missing lifeboat, but no signs of current life.
10:13There were several personal items left alone,
10:15indicating they hadn't been targeted by thieves.
10:18The remaining guesses range from insurance fraud to attacks from a giant squid.
10:22Unfortunately, false evidence has been published over the years,
10:26making the truth all the more unreachable.
10:28Trying to understand why an experienced captain would do the one thing
10:32that really is unthinkable, which is to leave your vessel.
10:35Number 20. The Hector Cloud.
10:37The Northern Territory of Australia experiences a very bizarre phenomenon
10:41every year between September and March.
10:44Around three every afternoon, a huge thunder cloud forms near the Tiwi Islands.
10:49The cloud has been named Hector by the locals, or more colloquially, Hector the Convector.
10:54This cloud was once used by pilots and sailors,
10:57and it's now the subject of intense meteorological study.
11:00We understand that it's caused by sea breezes interacting with the topography of the islands,
11:04but much about the cloud is still unknown.
11:07Perhaps future research will unveil more details about old Hector the Convector.
11:11Number 19. The Green Children of Woolpit, Suffolk, England.
11:15With no hard proof, some events end up sounding more like fiction.
11:19One year during the harvest in the village of Woolpit in Suffolk, England,
11:23about 10 miles from Bury St. Edmunds,
11:25reapers working near old wolf pits discovered two young children, a girl and a boy.
11:31The mysterious case of two green-skinned children arriving in a small English town
11:34sounds like pure fantasy, but according to some records,
11:37it was an actual occurrence that stumped people even back then.
11:40The children were eventually taken to the local bigwig, Sir Richard de Colne,
11:45who was equally baffled by them, though he took them into his household.
11:48They'd arrived randomly, spoke another language, and ate nothing but raw beans.
11:53They slowly lost their vibrant pigment, and one even learned English.
11:57However, even that wasn't enough to learn the truth of their origins.
12:00While the most accepted explanation is that they were sick Flemish citizens,
12:04there isn't enough evidence, leading to fringe theories that they came from an unknown civilization.
12:09Proponents assert that the children could have been English, but like many at the time,
12:13only spoke their village's unique dialect, some of which were unintelligible to outsiders.
12:18Regardless, it remains one of the most bizarre instances in history,
12:22if it ever even happened at all.
12:25Number 18. The Kentucky Meat Shower
12:28This sounds disgusting, and trust us, it is.
12:32Around 11 a.m. on March 3rd, 1876,
12:35small pieces of gristly meat began raining over Bath County, Kentucky.
12:40You may have seen a meteor shower, but you've never seen a shower meatier than this.
12:45Some people believed that it was divine intervention.
12:47Other people actually tasted it to see what kind of meat it was.
12:51I'm not eating mystery meat.
12:53Samples of the meat were sent to the Newark Scientific Association,
12:56which concluded that it was lung tissue.
12:58The people who didn't blame God attributed the event to vultures,
13:02who are prone to vomit their food when escaping from predators.
13:06It's likely that a kettle of vultures got spooked,
13:08took flight, and puked partially chewed meat all over the county.
13:12But no one really knows for sure.
13:15Number 17. The Flannan Isles Lighthouse Mystery
13:18I think it's reasonable to assume that they must have seen something floating in the water
13:23and went to salvage it and got caught in the process.
13:28Found off the west coast of Scotland is the Flannan Isles Lighthouse,
13:31which saw a very creepy disappearance in December of 1900.
13:35A passing steamer called Arctur noticed that the light wasn't on,
13:38and they reported this to the Northern Lighthouse Board.
13:41A relief vessel went to the island and found the three lighthouse keepers missing.
13:45They also saw extensive damage indicating that a strong storm had passed through the area.
13:50The initial investigation revealed that the men had been swept off the island by a giant swell.
13:55The Flannan Isles light had just been established a few months before
14:00the disappearance of the three keepers,
14:02and it may be that the keepers were not entirely familiar with the local conditions.
14:07This has remained the primary explanation, but the case is still being extensively researched,
14:12and different theories are continuously put forward.
14:16Number 16. The Body of Hsinchu
14:19A body reported to be unlike any other ancient body ever found.
14:25In 1968, diggers were working in the Chinese city of Changsha
14:29when they stumbled upon the tomb of Hsinchu.
14:31She was a noblewoman who died in either 169 or 168 BCE.
14:36What makes this find so startling is the remarkable condition of Hsinchu's mummy.
14:41Her muscles, skin, hair, and organs were very well preserved,
14:45and she even had a small amount of blood still in her veins.
14:49Two thousand year old woman, so well preserved,
14:52Peng and his colleagues could dissect her like a modern corpse.
14:56Experts believe that the deep underground setting and coffin type
15:00ensured the preservation of the body, but some questions still remain.
15:04For example, they don't know why this particular body was so well preserved
15:08when not many others have been found under similar circumstances.
15:12Number 15. The Pollock Sisters
15:15If there's one convincing case of reincarnation, it's the Pollock sisters.
15:19The Pollocks were walking to church when they were struck by a car and killed in May of 1957.
15:25Seventeen months later, their mother Florence Pollock gave birth to identical twin girls.
15:30The parents immediately noticed similarities to their deceased daughters,
15:34like identical scars and birthmarks.
15:36The girls also shared eerily similar personality traits and interests.
15:40And despite moving away from the area at nine months old,
15:43they both knew their way around when they returned for a visit four years later.
15:47Some see this as a genuine case of reincarnation,
15:50others believe it's mere coincidence inflated by grieving parents desperate to make connections.
15:55What about you?
15:57Number 14. The Disappearance of Amelia Earhart
16:00She was one of the most famous people in the world.
16:02People hung on her every word and followed her activities.
16:06There's a very good chance that Amelia Earhart crashed into the ocean.
16:10However, no one can make a definitive claim, as nothing has been proven either way.
16:16Earhart was an incredibly famous pilot in her day,
16:18being the first female to cross the Atlantic and writing numerous books.
16:22Earhart was attempting to fly around the globe in 1937
16:26when she disappeared near Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean.
16:29They know from the signal strength that she is coming,
16:33but they can't see her and she can't find the island.
16:35It was a headline story for quite a while and then gradually it died down.
16:44Most people believe that she simply ran out of fuel and crashed,
16:47but no evidence of her plane has ever been found.
16:51Another popular theory suggests that Earhart crashed near
16:54or landed on Gardner Island in Kiribati.
16:56But again, there's no hard evidence to suggest this.
17:00All we have is speculation.
17:02We're not talking about a couple or hundreds, but thousands of letters.
17:05They all had the same block lettering and they would target politicians and leaders,
17:09but also just plain folks who had nothing to do with the running of Circleville at all.
17:15The letters had very distinctive handwriting and contained accusations of embezzlement,
17:20affairs and even murder.
17:22The letters were also very difficult to read.
17:24The letters were written in a way that made it easier to read.
17:28Ron Gillespie died under mysterious circumstances after receiving a phone call
17:32and announcing that he was going to confront the writer.
17:35Was Ron Gillespie's death an accident?
17:37Was he really drunk that night?
17:40And why had one bullet been fired from his handgun?
17:43His wife was nearly killed by a gun in a booby trap attached to a sign.
17:48It turned out that Paul Freshour, Ron's brother-in-law, bought the gun
17:51and his handwriting was deemed to match the handwriting of the letter.
17:56And his handwriting was deemed to match the letters.
17:59You know, I can't blame the jury because the jury didn't hear all the evidence.
18:04But I was just, I just couldn't believe it.
18:07I was really in shock.
18:08Yet during his time in prison, people in town continued receiving them,
18:12even while Freshour was in solitary confinement.
18:15If Freshour was the writer, he wasn't working alone.
18:19We are writing this off as an unsolved mystery.
18:23Four decades later, the debate over the writer's identity continues.
18:30Doctors said that Diplomat's brain matter had actually changed.
18:34What started out as a mysterious nuisance
18:38became a suspected instrument of attack.
18:41Since 2016, U.S. officials and military personnel
18:45have been experiencing strange symptoms.
18:47These include pain, ringing in the ears,
18:49as well as difficulty with cognitive processes.
18:52A source says starting last December,
18:54the U.S. officials were exposed to a sonic device,
18:58which experts suggest could produce sound waves
19:01below and above human hearing, which could cause these symptoms.
19:05Named for the location it was initially reported, the embassy in Havana, Cuba,
19:10Havana syndrome has since been reported at U.S. bases and embassies in various countries.
19:15While some of those suffering from it have existing head injuries
19:18that could explain the symptoms, not all of them do.
19:23The recording is just one of the many sounds taken in Cuba
19:27that led investigators to initially believe it was a sonic weapon.
19:31Proposed explanations have included a psychogenic illness,
19:34the sound of crickets, or even a microwave weapon.
19:38While the CIA has concluded that most cases were probably not caused by a foreign power,
19:43two dozen cases remain unexplained.
19:46Accidental or targeted, Havana syndrome is yet to be fully understood.
19:50Who or what caused it? A mystery.
19:53The United States government is still not sure
19:56who or what is responsible for those health attacks.
19:59Number 11. The Max Headroom hijackings.
20:03On November 22nd in 1987, the broadcast of two Chicago TV stations was interrupted.
20:09Both interruptions featured an unidentified man
20:12dressed as the British AI character Max Headroom.
20:21The masked man disparaged the local station he was interrupting,
20:24made several pop culture references, and got spanked by a flyswatter.
20:29The heavily distorted audio, rotating background,
20:32and masked man gave the hijackings an eerie, almost David Lynchian feel.
20:47The hijackers couldn't be identified,
20:49nor did they come forward after the statute of limitations on their crime expired.
20:53These broadcasts seem destined to remain as mystifying as their contents.
20:58Takes some pretty significant equipment, technical equipment,
21:02and some knowledge of broadcast frequencies, microwave frequencies.
21:09Since 2007, residents of Washington, USA and British Columbia, Canada
21:14have found some rather morbid jetsam washed up on their beaches.
21:18Detached human feet.
21:20Most of them were found still inside shoes.
21:22Now you also have to consider whether or not this could be a serial killer.
21:28Somebody who right now is underneath the radar.
21:31But physical anthropologists cautioned that while the spate of discoveries was new and startling,
21:36public awareness could have prompted people to pay attention to stray running shoes.
21:40Foul play has been ruled out,
21:42as most of the identified victims were involved in accidents or took their own lives.
21:47It's been speculated that the feet detached as the bodies decayed,
21:50and that the air pockets and buoyant foam and sneakers floated them to the surface.
22:08But it still seems extremely odd that there have been so many,
22:11and all around the same area.
22:17How did the people die?
22:18And how many more feet are out there still to be found?
22:25It's an unsolved mystery keeping this neighborhood awake at night.
22:29Sounds like 50 trucks starting up when it's very loud.
22:33This is kind of like the Havana Syndrome,
22:35only far more widespread and involving people not related to the American government.
22:40Reports of a general humming or rumbling noise have been made all across the world,
22:44including Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and Taos, New Mexico,
22:48both of which have their own specially named hums.
22:51It's like a very low, almost like a vibration.
22:55You think you hear it, but it could be your mind playing tricks on you.
22:58While this sounds enormously irritating, help has been rare to non-existent.
23:03No one knows what's causing the humming,
23:05with different areas reporting their own possible causes.
23:08For example, the Windsor Hum reportedly ended in 2020
23:12when the blast furnaces of a local plant were deactivated.
23:15Others have blamed the likes of tinnitus, animals, and jet streams.
23:22The medieval period was a scary time, full of misery and poverty.
23:26These issues may have led to the Dancing Plague.
23:29The curious mania affected Europe throughout much of this period,
23:32spanning from the 14th to the 17th century.
23:35People would take to the streets and dance
23:37until they hurt themselves or collapsed from exhaustion.
23:40Some sources claim that, for at least some portion of the outbreak,
23:43as many as 15 people were dying a day.
23:46And if it's not already obvious, the dancers weren't having fun.
23:49Sometimes good-intentioned musicians would accompany the dancers,
23:53believing that their sounds would cure the affliction.
23:56The plan was a disaster.
23:58Rather than tire out the dancers, the music and the stage
24:01only encouraged more people to join in.
24:03It was the best that anyone could do, because no one knew how to treat it.
24:07Even to this day, the incident is poorly understood.
24:10Some attribute it to the general stress of living in medieval Europe.
24:13Others to ergot poisoning and religious cults.
24:22The solutions to some crimes that have been investigated for decades,
24:25such as the murder of Elizabeth Short,
24:27are still just as elusive as they were when they first began.
24:30This is Los Angeles' most notorious unsolved murder.
24:33The aspiring actress who became known as the Black Dahlia
24:36met her brutal fate in 1947.
24:39And since then, authorities have not come any closer to finding the killer.
24:43Besides the untrue details about Short herself that circulated throughout the media,
24:47over 500 people have confessed,
24:50some of whom were born after the crime took place.
24:52The killer even wrote letters taunting the police,
24:55and also sent Elizabeth Short's personal address book to a local newspaper.
25:01Celebrities and normal people alike have been named as potential perpetrators,
25:05with each lead eventually ending in a dead end.
25:07Despite the lack of results,
25:09many still are interested in finally giving her justice.
25:12This case, this investigation has been described as a riddle
25:15wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.
25:17And I can't think of a more perfect description than that.
25:24No, Tromp with an O.
25:26In 2016, Mark and Jacoba Tromp took their three adult children
25:30on an impromptu road trip hundreds of miles north,
25:33leaving their house unlocked.
25:36Mark seemed convinced that people were out to get them and forbade phones.
25:40Their son Mitchell brought one anyway,
25:42but it was later thrown out the car window.
25:44He left, not understanding his parents' paranoia.
25:47Later, the daughters left too,
25:49stealing a car before splitting up.
25:52One, Rihanna, was found in a catatonic state.
25:55Ultimately, all returned safely,
25:57but no explanation has been given specifically for what happened.
26:01Whether it was shared psychosis or someone was out to get the Tromps,
26:04the case has fascinated the world ever since.
26:07I thought at first that Trump had gone missing.
26:09I saw that, I went, Trump's gone missing.
26:12I went, well, there you go.
26:14Speaking of delusion.
26:14Yeah, exactly.
26:15All right.
26:16Number five, the Oakville blobs.
26:18In 1994, Oakville, Washington experienced perhaps
26:22the strangest weather phenomenon of the last few decades.
26:25It rained blobs.
26:28Strange goo fell from the sky over a period of several weeks,
26:31blanketing the town in ooze.
26:34And it made people sick.
26:37I got sick, my wife got sick, my daughter.
26:39What's even more bizarre is that the residents experienced
26:42a widespread illness that lasted for several weeks too.
26:45So what could this goo have been?
26:48Someone theorized that since the Navy had been conducting
26:53live bombing runs at sea,
26:55they might have blown up a school of jellyfish.
26:59And of course, this jellyfish would have been thrown up into the air,
27:04and floated 50 miles inland,
27:07and over a period of three weeks, fallen six times.
27:12Was it evaporated bits of jellyfish that reformed in a cloud,
27:16or maybe waste from an airplane?
27:18The most troubling theory is that the event
27:20was a military experiment on U.S. soil.
27:23Translation, germ warfare.
27:26There are a whole mess of theories about this messy and weird weather.
27:31If we did discover an actual signal from an alien civilization,
27:36it would profoundly change human beings.
27:40Despite some very extensive and incredibly expensive efforts,
27:43we have found no hard evidence of extraterrestrial life,
27:47at least not public evidence.
27:48But we do have the wow signal.
27:51It was August 15th, 1977,
27:53and a telescope at Ohio State University
27:56picked up a very bizarre radio signal.
27:58The telescope recorded the signal for a solid 72 seconds.
28:02So imagine you're listening closely for something as quiet as a pin to drop.
28:06Bam, you hear something as loud as books slamming on a table.
28:09That's what happened.
28:10A few days later,
28:11astronomer Jerry Ehman was studying the data
28:13when he stumbled across the signal.
28:15He circled the series of letters and numbers in red ink,
28:17and wrote a very enthusiastic wow beside it.
28:20Wow is right.
28:22To this day, no one knows what caused the signal.
28:25It is the best evidence that we know of,
28:28of coming from some other civilization.
28:30Number three, D.B. Cooper.
28:32The story of D.B. Cooper has captured our collective imaginations for decades.
28:37Well, he either got away,
28:38or else he sure made a big hole in the ground up there.
28:40On November 24th, 1971,
28:42a man largely known as D.B. Cooper hijacked an airplane
28:46for the modern equivalent of one-point-six-five.
28:49He was a young man who had just graduated from high school.
28:52D.B. Cooper hijacked an airplane for the modern equivalent of 1.3 million dollars.
28:57The plane landed in Seattle,
28:58and Cooper allowed the passengers to disembark.
29:01He then ordered that the empty aircraft be flown to Mexico City.
29:04But shortly after takeoff,
29:06Cooper opened the door and jumped out with his parachute.
29:09And with that, he disappeared from both the plane and history.
29:12His identity is never uncovered, nor is his body.
29:17It's impossible.
29:18Neither the man nor the money has ever been found.
29:21But a small portion was discovered on the Columbia River in 1980.
29:25It's likely that Cooper died in the jump,
29:27but we just don't know for sure.
29:29Number 2.
29:30The Disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370.
29:34Families waiting for MH370.
29:39They still wait,
29:40and really, they don't know much more than they did that first awful morning.
29:45On March 8th, 2014,
29:48Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 vanished while flying from Malaysia to China.
29:52After a loss of communications and its disappearance from civilian radar,
29:57Flight 370 reappeared on military radar,
30:00having deviated from its planned flight path.
30:02Approaching the point at which Malaysian Air Traffic Control will hand over to Vietnam.
30:09Then, Captain Zahari makes a last, routine, but now infamous, radio transmission.
30:18The disappearance has fascinated the public for years,
30:21and led to several expensive searches.
30:24It seemed impossible for an entire airplane to just go missing
30:28in an age where everything can be seen by satellites.
30:31Although a few pieces have washed ashore,
30:34Although a few pieces have washed ashore,
30:37the bulk of the aircraft and the reason for its deviation remain unclear.
30:54Speculations have run the gamut from a hijacking,
30:57to being shot down, to some kind of equipment failure.

31:19In 1959, nine Russian hikers were found dead in the Ural Mountains.
31:24All were severely injured, several were undressed,
31:27and they had cut their way out of their tent from the inside.
31:31Some were burned, and others slightly radioactive.
31:35Most seem to have died of hypothermia or their injuries.
31:38The case has baffled the public and authorities for over half a century.
31:43Theories include an avalanche, an animal attack, or military involvement.
31:48This is the last photo taken by the hikers before they died.
31:52It's out of focus, but it seems to show mysterious lights in the sky.
31:56The most plausible theory involves the group camping against a heavy snowbank,
32:00which collapsed, leading them to assume an avalanche,
32:03and freezing after they escaped the tent.
32:05But unless there really was outside involvement, only the victims know the truth.
32:11The evidence here is both extensive, yet maddeningly incomplete.
32:15And until we fill in the gaps, the case cannot be fully closed.
