00:00 All over Brazil and in other cities around the world commemorated this March 14th,
00:04 the sixth anniversary of the assassination of Consul Woman
00:08 Mariel Franco and her driver Anderson Gomes.
00:11 The crime was committed in Rio de Janeiro in 2018,
00:14 and so far the Brazilian state does not answer who had them killed and why.
00:19 Let's see more details in the following report by our correspondent,
00:22 Andres Vieira and Sebastián Soro.
00:28 The church of Our Lady of Childbirth in Rio de Janeiro was full this March 14th.
00:33 Parishioners, representatives of different religions and family members,
00:38 claim it for justice.
00:39 Six years ago, paramilitary gunfire took the lives of Mariel Franco and her driver Anderson Gomes.
00:47 The black, bisexual and human rights defender Consul Woman was the victim of a political crime.
00:55 We cannot deny the pain and death the structural system and historical abuse against black people.
01:00 Four accused of planning and executing the crime are in custody,
01:07 and five other suspects were killed over the last five years.
01:10 This Thursday, the local media reported that the investigations reached the Supreme Court,
01:17 since an investigated person was identified who can only be judged by the highest court of the
01:23 country, legal rights of deputies, senators and the national executive.
01:27 It is unacceptable that our family and Anderson's family still have no answer
01:34 as to who ordered her death. It is unacceptable that the perpetrators,
01:38 those accused of the execution, are still not in popular justice.
01:42 But we will reiterate that our family will continue to fight for justice,
01:46 and we will be the continuation of her dream, and we will be resistant for her.
01:52 Political violence in this country needs to end. It doesn't matter what your political position is.
01:57 It doesn't matter who you vote for. We can no longer allow under any hypothesis
02:02 is that we do not dialogue in favor of democracy.
02:04 The march for justice for Mariel and Anderson was also joined by those who lost family members,
02:11 killed by the Rio de Janeiro police.
02:13 And we are in a new year without Mariel. She was with me the day of my son's death.
02:21 She held my hand. She was with me all the time. So that's why I'm here today to ask
02:26 for justice for Mariel and Anderson.
02:28 The mourning turned into a struggle in the firm steps of these people.
02:35 If the shots were to silence her voice and what she represented,
02:39 Mariel Franco's legacy lives on and multiplies.
02:42 When we have a justification for the crime, it is not that the pain will be solved,
02:49 but we will know that the state is looking at us, that the state is looking at Mariel's family,
02:54 that the state is looking at the human rights defenders. Now we have
02:57 to ask the same question for six years. Who ordered to kill Mariel? And we have no answers.
03:05 The day ended with the justice for Mariel and Anderson festival
03:12 in the territory of Little Africa in Rio de Janeiro.
03:16 André Vieira and Sebastien Soto, Telesur, Brazil.
