Alison McGovern has hit out at the prime minister’s plan for immigration, saying that she “doesn’t believe that Rishi Sunak can achieve anything on immigration.” It comes after the Mr Sunak’s Rwanda deportation plan has been hit by further delay after defiant peers dug their heels in and inflicted a series of fresh defeats against the controversial policy. 00:00 I don't believe Rishi Sunak can achieve anything on immigration because the
00:04 Conservatives have had 14 years in power and this problem, the immigration backlog,
00:10 has only got worse not better. That's a problem because if our system doesn't
00:16 work well it means that we can't deal with the security risks and also help
00:21 people move on and you know rebuild their life. Of course the Tories are
00:27 going to blame Labour and the opposition parties because when it comes to this
00:31 Conservative government after 14 years of failure it's always someone else's
00:36 fault. The fact is Rishi Sunak is the Prime Minister of our country and if he
00:41 wants to fix our immigration system he should be able to do it. The expense of
00:47 the Rwanda scheme is ridiculous. You could afford to put people up in fancy
00:53 hotels for years on the money that they've wasted on this Rwanda scheme and
00:57 when my constituents have dealt with George Osborne's austerity, the problems
01:01 in our public finances, I think it's a disgrace that they have wasted so much
01:05 time and money on this. As I say we've got an alternative because we know when
01:09 it comes to fixing our immigration system you've got to do the basics well.
01:13 Get to the criminal gangs, police them properly, like find those people and
01:17 arrest them and deal with the backlog.
