Part 1 of 7 of the D.H. Lawrence novel from 1981. Gertrude Morel struggles to adapt to her new surroundings after the family have moved to a mining village in Nottingham, where her alcoholic husband Walter works down the pits. Her marriage is not a happy one, and with little money coming by and another child on the way she looks back on how she first met her husband. She pours all her hopes into her children, in particular her eldest son William, but little realizes what fate has in store for them...

Starring Eileen Atkins, Tom Bell, Geoffrey Burridge, Myrtle Devenish, Wilfred Grove, Molly Guilfoyle, Ian Kirkby, Craig Napier, Amanda Parfitt, Mark Rockley, John Quarmby, Brenda Peters, Glyn Cook, Jacqui Cassidy and David Allister. This is from a TV recording from when it was originally broadcast on January 14th 1981, so apologies in advance for any glitches or picture quality issues there may be. This is one series I was fortunate enough to save from Mick's Nostalgia Channel and as it is a series that does not seem to of been released on DVD since is a rare find indeed. It's slow moving at 7 episodes, but faithful enough to the D.H. Lawrence novel from which it is adapted from.
