00:04 Based on the Department of Health, 453 cases of whooping cough or pertussis were recorded in the first 10 weeks of 2024.
00:14 The outbreak is already felt in Quezon City.
00:18 Mark Salazar has the first news.
00:23 27 cases of whooping cough or pertussis were recorded in Quezon City in 2023.
00:30 In the first 3 months of 2024, the cases of whooping cough or pertussis in Quezon City continued to rise.
00:38 The local government has already declared an outbreak.
00:41 As of March 20 this year, we already recorded 23 cases of pertussis.
00:49 What is more heartbreaking is this acute infectious disease has claimed the lives of 4 babies.
00:58 Their age ranging from 23 days to 60 days.
01:03 That is why we need to declare that we have a pertussis outbreak in Quezon City.
01:10 Pertussis is a respiratory disease caused by bacteria.
01:14 It is more deadly to children, especially to babies.
01:19 The symptoms are that babies are born, usually babies,
01:23 more than two weeks old, and they have difficulty breathing.
01:29 Babies are mostly affected.
01:32 Other babies, after they are born, their babies cough.
01:39 That is one of the descriptions we have.
01:41 There are already cases of pertussis in five districts of Quezon City.
01:45 But in Barangay Payatas B, the epidemiology and surveillance of the City Health Department is in place.
01:51 It is not said that this is where the infection started.
01:55 But this is where the case number one was recorded this year.
01:59 They had a cold.
02:01 So the patient also had symptoms of a cold.
02:04 On March 8, the twin sister also tested positive for the pertussis.
02:10 The patient already had the cold.
02:13 Unfortunately, one of the patients died.
02:16 The two other siblings of case number one also tested positive.
02:20 The LGU quarantined the household that was infected with pertussis.
02:25 But the LGU clarified that the outbreak cannot be brought back to the barangay or streetwide lockdown.
02:32 We only quarantined those within the household and there are longer contacts in our case.
02:39 So that is what we are quarantining.
02:42 We are issuing a quarantine order or isolation order to the family.
02:47 It's easy to get the pertussis if it's available.
02:50 But it spreads quickly if there are many who are not vaccinated in the community.
02:54 According to QCLGU, they have a problem with the vaccine.
02:59 Quezon City needs more than 42,000 doses of the Pantavalent vaccine to stop the spread of the disease.
03:07 But the Department of Health said that the supply will arrive in July.
03:12 That's why they are looking for other suppliers.
03:14 There is nothing to panic about for now.
03:17 They are reminding people to be careful just like during COVID.
03:22 You should always wash your hands, sit and lie on your arms.
03:26 Wear a face mask and self-quarantine if you have symptoms.
03:30 According to the Department of Health, 453 cases of whooping cough were recorded in the first 10 weeks of the year
03:38 for 23 cases at the same time in 2022.
03:42 This is the first news.
03:44 Mark Salazar for GMA Integrated News.
