RNLI scorll explained for 200 year anniversary

The RNLI team in Farnham, Haslemere & Godalming celebrated the 200 year anniversary of the organisation with a scroll signing ceremony.

Sealed inside a custom orange buoyant briefcase encapsulated the scroll that will be sent to over 250 branches of the RNLI.

Inside the briefcase is a scroll made from bamboo paper and the spindle ends are from a 19th century flag pole from the Isle of Man.

The scroll will have it’s permanent home in the RNLI college in Poole.

The RNLI Scroll began its journey on Monday 4 March 2024 at Westminster Abbey to mark the charity’s official 200th anniversary. It was signed by the RNLI President, HRH Duke of Kent, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Dean of Westminster and leading RNLI representatives.

On this scroll is the RNLI’s One Crew pledge, in which the RNLI’s promise the
commitment to saving every one we can, without judgment – staying true to Sir William
Hillary’s vision when he founded the charity in 1824.

The Farnham, Haslemere & Godalming branches of the RNLI are all continuing to raise money for the organisation through various means such as abseiling Guildford cathedral.

The Chairman of the Farnham & District Branch is Nigel Cuthbert who will be invited to
sign the Pledge. As part of the 200 year celebrations the Branch is organising a quiz
night on the 20th April and an afternoon Bridge session in August.
Local branches are holding events during the year to celebrate the anniversary with
Godalming holding a sponsored abseil down Guildford Cathedral on June 15th, Haslemere holding an open garden on the 9th June. The local branches at Alton and Petersfield are also having celebratory events.

00:00 I'll pass on thank you very much for hosting us. I had the same concerns maybe as yourself that we might be in a field or on the edge of a road somewhere.
00:08 So it's a lovely venue so thank you very much. A lot of what you said is this is the pledge, we're all here today and that's what the people today are signing it.
00:17 But today goes past just the people signing it. We're all here in the moment, we're all one crew, we're a part of this magnificent moment.
00:24 And it's a once in a lifetime moment. Things like Westminster, things like today, they're not going to happen again or not certainly for a long time.
00:31 So capture the moment, it's going to be one to be a part of and one to remember.
00:36 The scroll itself is, there's this thing in the RMA where we like engineering things perfectly and again the scroll is one of those moments.
00:46 So if you did watch Westminster there was a lot of comments about why are you carrying a life raft off the altar and not many people knew the precious contents inside which you are seeing today.
00:58 So when the box is open you've got the lovely scroll that's been made in-house.
01:03 So the spindle ends from a 19th century flagpole from the Isle of Man and actually they were made in-house at the RMA.
01:12 So before he soon retired someone from the ALC took the blocks of wood to his home lathe and worked on them at home.
01:20 So they've got personal parts there as well.
01:23 The paper we've got the signatures on which will be signed today is a bamboo paper and matched with the pens helps stop and reduce bleed and smudging.
01:31 So your signatures will look perfect for years to come, hopefully if we do our job right.
01:37 The speaker here speaks out the One Crew message and actually it's in different voices of our region.
01:42 So you'll have an English voice, an Irish voice, a Scottish voice, it's a lovely thing.
01:47 So if you have time today I'd encourage you to press that and listen to it, it's a lovely thing to listen to.
01:52 My new technical term has become Boaty Bits.
01:54 So everything here is from a boat.
01:56 So your carbon fibre pieces such as the voice books and there's a carbon fibre block underneath will be found in your D-classes, your Atlantics and your Shannon class lifeboats.
02:04 The handles on the front and the back are cleats so not very comfortable to hold but they add to it as well.
02:11 And a few new techniques as well added in.
02:13 So the holders for the spindles and the pens are from a 3D printer.
02:17 So we've matched old boat building techniques with new modding techniques we've got in-house as well.
02:22 So I've scrolled the scroll up as well just to show you guys from the top.
02:27 So we've got a space for our patron, we can speculate who it is and who we hope it will be but there is a space for them.
02:33 Duke of Kent is our president, he's been our president for about 60 years and he's been a great supporter of our work.
02:39 The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Dean of Westminster also signed and then followed by Mark Dalley, our current Chief Executive and Janet O'Garand, our Chair.
02:47 So there is one more space you'll see for our incoming Chief Executive in June, Peter Sparks.
02:54 So today you'll be the 83rd, 4th and 85th signatures on this document and you'll be adding the history.
