00:00 "In the immortal words of the six-god Drizzy Drake, 'Back to back like I'm on the cover
00:04 of Lethal Weapon, back to back like I'm Jordan 96/97.'"
00:08 From time to time, WWE will decide to run back their biggest WrestleMania matches the
00:12 following year, sometimes in a Part 1/2 format, sometimes because it was so good they just
00:17 had to do it again, and sometimes because they f*cked it up the first time.
00:21 Regardless of the reasoning, some of the biggest matches in WrestleMania history fall under
00:25 this distinction and, well, now just feels like an appropriate time to shine a light
00:29 on those matches.
00:30 I'm Tempest Hailing from PartsFunKnown, and these are the 7 matches WWE did on back-to-back
00:34 WrestleManias.

02:05 Uh, no, no, I, I, no, I didn't sign up for that, no, I'm not doing that.
02:11 Show them.
02:15 Honorable mention Shawn Michaels vs Bret Hart, WrestleManias 12 and 13.
02:19 Well this was supposed to be a back-to-back WrestleMania match, but then Shawn took an
02:23 arrow to the smile, and we all know what happened next.
02:26 We did not get the follow-up to the longest WrestleMania match in history, rather we got
02:30 maybe the best WrestleMania match in history, and personally, I'll make that trade, even
02:34 if it makes this list one entry shorter.
02:36 #7 Roman Reigns vs Cody Rhodes, WrestleManias 39 and 40.
02:41 Since we currently only have one half of the equation to talk about for this one, we'll
02:45 start here.
02:46 A rematch one year in the making, and a rematch that probably shouldn't have ever been necessary.
02:50 We are rapidly approaching WrestleMania 40 and the rematch between Roman Reigns and Cody
02:54 Rhodes, and thus we will soon be able to say once and for all whether or not waiting another
02:58 year actually made Cody's coronation more meaningful.
03:01 For the last 12 months, the answer has been a resounding no, but maybe, with the context
03:06 of both matches having happened, we will get a different answer.
03:09 As it stands, Cody Rhodes vs Roman Reigns from WrestleMania 39 is one of the greatest
03:13 WrestleMania main events ever until the last 10 seconds, when the laziest bulls***t finish
03:19 put the final chapter of Cody's story on hiatus.
03:21 And while the inclusion of The Rock has certainly given Roman Cody 2 a shot of hype, it remains
03:26 to be seen whether the sequel will be able to capture the magic of the first 34 minutes
03:30 and 18 seconds of the original.
03:32 #6 Bret Hart vs Yokozuna, WrestleManias 9 and 10.
03:37 Wrestlemania 10 is the "Sorry, Bret" mania after the disaster that was Wrestlemania 9.
03:41 The old school fans answer for the worst Wrestlemania, and for good reason.
03:45 Mania 9's main event of burgeoning champion Bret Hart having to cut his main event match
03:49 short because Yokozuna was gassed, and then getting absolutely cucked by Hulk Hogan appearing
03:54 out of thin air to win the title was, how do you say, not very good, in case you hadn't
03:59 heard in the last 30 years.
04:01 It was so not good, in fact, that WWE decided to simply play the Uno reverse card the following
04:05 year and have Royal Rumble winner Bret win the title back and also get to have the greatest
04:10 opening match in Mania history all in one night.
04:13 Once again, this was the "Sorry, Bret" mania.
04:16 Neither of the matches are by any means classic Mania main events, but they both perfectly
04:20 encapsulate WWE's reluctance to commit to Bret as the top guy in 1993 over their tried
04:26 and true "big and muscly" approach and the sheer undeniability of Bret Hart as the
04:30 top star of the company in 1994.
04:32 And thankfully, with Bret closing out Mania 10 on the babyface's shoulders, the apology
04:37 was as loud as the disrespect.
04:39 #5 Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant, WrestleManias 3 and 4
04:44 The main event of WrestleMania 3 is probably the most iconic moment in WWE history.
04:49 The ninth match on the never-ending card of WrestleMania 4… isn't.
04:53 It makes plenty of sense why WWE would've wanted to have Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant
04:57 on yet another of their biggest shows after the massive success of WrestleMania 3 and
05:01 the Saturday Night's main event where Andre quote-unquote "beats" Hogan for the title,
05:06 but their match at WrestleMania 4 carries none of the significance of either of their
05:09 previous two matches.
05:10 Partially due to being in the middle of a monotonous show like WrestleMania 4, and partially
05:15 due to it being just as poorly wrestled as their predecessors with a much worse finish.
05:19 There was no Hogan slamming Andre, there was no double Hebner fiasco, there was only Hulk
05:23 Hogan swinging a chair around, resulting in a double DQ and both men's elimination from
05:28 the world title tournament, which is BULLSHIT because Andre did nothing to warrant a disqualification.
05:35 Justice for Andre the Giant.
05:36 #4 The Hardys vs The Dudleys vs Edge and Christian
05:40 WrestleMania 2000 and X-7
05:42 Right now we're getting to that good good.
05:45 In this case, WWE not only ran back the match, but the stipulation as well and this time,
05:50 they gave the lads chairs.
05:52 At WrestleMania 2000, The Hardys, Dudleys and Edge and Christian made themselves bonafide
05:55 superstars with a first ever triangle ladder match in WWE history.
06:00 A match filled with tables, ladders and somehow no chairs.
06:04 Hmm, it's strange, those seem like the most common one.
06:07 But this ladder match was so good that it intertwined these three teams for the next
06:10 12 months and beyond as they came together once again in the first ever TLC match at
06:14 Summerslam and then the legendary TLC2 at WrestleMania X-7.
06:19 And somehow, all three of them were won by Edge and Christian.
06:22 Cheers lads, bringing home all the gold that the Leafs can.
06:24 Mania X-7 is the greatest mania of all time, made that way in no small part due to the
06:29 greatest TLC match of all time.
06:31 It would have been impossible to continue to escalate the kind of violent car crash
06:35 madness that these six lads were putting themselves through without a casualty being suffered.
06:39 So I'm very glad that WrestleMania 18 didn't see a TLC3 peat, but these two matches will
06:44 stand as the only time an undercard mania match was so impeccable that WWE had to do
06:49 it again the next year.
06:51 3.
06:52 Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker - WrestleMania 25-26
06:56 Quite possibly the matches of the highest quality on this list.
06:59 Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker's Wrestlemania double feature stance is really the only notable
07:03 highlight of both WrestleMania 25 and 26.
07:06 At WrestleMania 25 it isn't even close, with nothing coming within a country mile of their
07:10 matches quality.
07:11 A match so good that even The Undertaker doing a swan dive into an imaginary pool and nearly
07:16 dying couldn't stop people from calling this the greatest match of all time for the last
07:20 decade and a half, and a match so good that WWE decided that the best course of action
07:24 for WrestleMania 26 was just to do it again and have Shawn go out on an all-time classic.
07:29 Unsurprisingly that is exactly what we got with some aspects of their Mania 26 classic
07:34 even surpassing their previous match even if it wouldn't reach the original's iconic
07:38 status.
07:39 The selling in this Mania 26 match is so f*cking incredible with Undertaker tweaking his knee
07:43 coming off the ropes with Old School only to then no-sell that worked injury until Shawn
07:48 was able to target it.
07:49 It is masterful stuff, but really nothing in this match tops the finish from 25 where
07:54 a perfectly executed moonsault was the showstopper's undoing.
07:58 This is one of the best examples of the Mania sequel done well as everything about their
08:02 first match played into the story of their second and made for one hell of a video package
08:07 to promote it.
08:08 Number 2 - Triple H vs The Undertaker - WrestleMania 27 and 28
08:12 And then WWE did it again.
08:15 Following the immense success of The Undertaker-Shawn Michaels doubleheader, WWE tried to recreate
08:19 that magic and turn things into an Undertaker DX story.
08:22 And to their credit, a lot of the storytelling surrounding the two matches that Undertaker
08:27 and Triple H had at WrestleMania 27 and 28 was exceptional.
08:31 Not any of the "We're the last two real stars around, there's no challenge left but you"
08:35 sh*t.
08:36 That was f*cking stupid.
08:37 But when Shawn Michaels finally returned to Raw to confront Triple H and ask why he thought
08:41 he could do what Shawn couldn't, and then Undertaker goading Triple H into accepting
08:45 his challenge a year later by saying Shawn was always better than him, ooooh that is
08:50 the kind of character-based storytelling that is just ooooh it's so delightful for me.
08:54 And as for the matches, I for one am a big fan of the match that Triple H and Taker have
08:59 at WrestleMania 27.
09:00 The action may be slow at times, but it actually does service the story in this case, whereas
09:04 that is absolutely not the case with many of Triple H's Mania matches.
09:08 And this match was the time that I actually thought there might have been a sliver of
09:11 a chance that WWE would be so stupid to have Triple H end the streak.
09:16 That sliver of doubt was all it took, my friends.
09:18 I didn't have that doubt in many of Taker's matches.
09:21 And of course, their Mania 28 Hell in a Cell match was a perfect conclusion to the four
09:25 Mania-long series between The Undertaker and those two dickheads from the 90s, complete
09:29 with what many people say is the greatest nearfall in wrestling history when even DX's
09:34 combined might couldn't kill the Deadman.
09:37 And number one, John Cena vs The Rock, WrestleMania 28 and 29.
09:43 Once in a lifetime, ooooh.
09:46 This bit of bullsh*t marketing may be the second most nauseating example of WWE's
09:50 flagrant false advertising after the word's greatest royal rumble, but in terms of WrestleMania,
09:55 it takes the top spot.
09:57 You may notice a bit of a trend from this era of WrestleMania, but WWE really did like
10:01 to stretch these main event stories out from Mania to Mania, and while matches like Taker
10:05 and DX justified that decision with their quality in storytelling, John Cena and The
10:09 Rock's back-to-back Mania main events after the soiling of WrestleMania 27 to get them
10:13 there, did not.
10:14 Don't get me wrong, Cena and The Rock going head-to-head at WrestleMania 28 felt huge,
10:19 the next step in the past vs present Mania timeline that had occurred when The Rock faced
10:23 Hulk Hogan.
10:24 But their Mania 28 match was broadly fine and very long, and then the story WWE told
10:29 with John Cena in the year that followed remains one of the most baffling bits of nonsense
10:33 WWE has ever produced.
10:35 Sure, the idea of Cena losing to The Rock causing his downward spiral makes sense, but
10:40 when in the following 12 months he beat the returning Brock Lesnar, won Money in the Bank,
10:45 and won the Royal Rumble, I'm not going to buy it when you tell me that losing to
10:49 The Rock ruined Cena's life.
10:51 And what did it accomplish in the end?
10:52 A watered-down version of their match from the year before that everyone has memed on
10:57 since.
10:58 Twice in a lifetime, indeed.
10:59 So here's hoping you do better than this, Roman and Cody.
11:02 The bar is, fortunately, not very high.
11:05 And that's our list!
