Sheffield Urban CX returned to Park Hill on Saturday 23 March to offer an urban hill climb event with a difference, as cyclists take on a cobbled course in the shadow of Europe’s largest listed building.
The cobbled V below Park Hill creates the two Cobbled Climbs, making it a great place to watch or take part, in this fast and furious event that will test riders and thrill spectators.
The Yorkshire Post photoghrapher James Hardisty spoke with the organiser Adam Simmonite and Ed Clancy OBE, Three-times Olympic Gold Medalist.

00:00 Hello my name is Mark Fancy, I'm the director of the convention here in South Yorkshire.
00:04 I'm best known for being three time world medalist for Forrest Gump.
00:08 So we're here at the Park Hill Uprise today.
00:12 It's the second time I've done this event and it's a little bit different to Olympic track cycling.
00:18 It's very much a fun and community event and today I'm taking part in the Folding Brompton Challenge.
00:24 So very simplistically you've got to build your Brompton at the bottom of the hill
00:28 and then race it up the cobble climb as fast as you can.
00:31 Last year I was absolutely rubbish because I was still working out how to fold a Brompton
00:36 but I'm very much looking forward to it and it's a great event.

01:14 My name is Adam Simonite, I'm the event organiser for Sheffield Urban Title.
01:19 We've been running events on the Park Hill since 2017 when the redevelopment was started.
01:25 So we've managed to do a course that went all the way through the site.
01:29 Obviously development has happened so we've had to adapt with the site.
01:32 So we've got this hill platform which is a great entry level race for people who want to try cycling sport
01:38 or maybe want to race it more.
01:41 We've got a lot of different categories, so we've got Brompton category, we've got younger juniors,
01:47 and we've got juniors and adults.
01:49 So it's all about having a good time and we've got a lot of good active travel routes to get to the site as well.
02:01 Tell us a little bit about the race, one of the fun races.
02:05 One of the fun races, so the fun races, we run the races, it's like a not for profit.
02:11 So we have two local charities that we work with which is around Sheffield
02:16 and also Work Limited, which is a health and health charities, which is a charity that's come up in England
02:21 just to get another foot up in life as well.
02:25 So it's a roundabout, sort of work with local people, you know, the stronger young people coming out of the care system.
02:31 And Work Limited offer children with disabilities opportunities to get into workplaces and start work.
02:41 And what other races, people dressing up in fancy dress?
02:44 Yeah, so the Brompton race is traditionally like, it's about business suits and looking smart.
02:51 Obviously we've got a bit of a cloudy sky today, so we'll see what we get.
02:55 But yeah, they really do make an effort and you do have to make a physical effort on those bikes,
02:59 So Peter Cobb will need to do well.
03:00 So it's a pretty tough race.
03:01 - It's a price.
